I'm alive and ready to get things going again.

I've got a back log of stuff that needs tending in fandom land, so much so I might need a to do list.

My diet ended up in fuckitville for a few weeks so I've got to get that back on track.

This weekend wasn't bad. I tried to watch the last season of Doctor Who but the first episode was ungodly boring and I saw no sign of plot before I turned it off after 15 minutes. Then we watched a George Carlin comedy special and then watched Planet Earth.
I'm mostly over the sinus infection and now just have to figure out why my lower back hurts.

But I feel like a human being again.

Ashland Trip!

So my parents have been going down to Ashland pretty regularly since I was a teen. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival is located there. It's basically a town that is all Theatre district because of it. Which means lots of great shops, food, and theatre. The festival runs from February through October, and so we went down towards the end of the festival, which means we missed one of the shows. But we got to see the other 10. Most days we had two plays each, but it was worth it. This is all these people do, so it's always good theatre, even if it's not as great as some of the other plays. They do a mix of Shakespeare, Shakespeare-related, experimental theatre, and nowadays they have one musical from Broadway, done in their style.

Last year, for my birthday, my parents offered to take me down with them this year. As I hadn't been down since before I was employed (and even longer before that trip), I of course said yes.

We left Sunday, and took our time going down. We left Seattle around 11-ish, and got down to Portland shortly before supper time. We wandered around and found the world's smallest park, Mill Ends Park. Afterwards, we wandered around until we found a place to eat, then headed off for Powells, and spent the rest of the evening there.

Monday morning we got up, had a small breakfast, and then went to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, which had the Pompeii exhibit going on.
Some shots from the exhibit )

Drove down to the Oregon Outlet mall and shopped that day, then drove again to Eugene, where we stopped at Smith Family Bookstore, then went to the Oregon Electric Station for dinner. We stayed across the freeway in Springfield that night.

Then Tuesday morning we got up, drove down to Medford, and picked up a scooter for mom to use in Ashland. And then we were on our way to Ashland.

Recap of my time in Ashland )

The next morning, we packed up and went home. We stopped in Cottage Grove for lunch and found a place with great pub food and a craft soda menu. I went with something called "Dang That's Good Butterscotch Rootbeer." It was delicious. We got back to Seattle sometime after seven, had supper, and then they dropped me off, whereupon my cat began to complain at me that I had been gone for a whole week. And has only finally calmed down today.

It was a great trip, and I really want to go back next year because they're doing Othello, which is my favorite play, and also the Book of Will, which is about the making of the first folio. We'll see if it happens. Maybe I'll try to talk sis into it, just the two of us, or something.

So I (sadly) just said goodbye to [personal profile] lq_traintracks, who came up for the day to visit.
Alas, we had plans to write porn something (maybe do a Word War™ or two), but instead we drank margaritas, talked politics (hence why we needed alcohol), ate cake (OMG, she brought the most delicious tiramisu, chocolate mouse, AND carrot cake from a French bakery), ate taquitos, and we even watched Blink.

It was such fun and I already miss her. <3

We even made tentative plans for another meet up (this time possibly with [personal profile] sdk!) in December around the holidays!

*bounces*

And even though we didn't manage to write, I am working on a little something, so we'll see. I may be posting it soon. ;)

Sorry I've been so quiet, everyone. I fell out of the habit of posting regularly over at Insanejournal, so I'm working on getting back into the habit.

My birthday was great. My parents took me down to Ashland, Oregon, to the Shakespeare Festival there. It was fabulous, and I will make a post on that shortly (have to go through the few photos I have so I can share them with you all without showing people, because I do try to separate my fandom and personal spaces). Got back to work Tuesday and had a ton of great gifties from co-workers (mostly chocolate, which I made myself sick on), and have been trying to catch up on all my sites ever since.

I also got my Loot Crate box this week, which I finally picked up on Friday, so I will share those shots with you now, because I loved this box.
Many images of Loot Crate Goodness behind the cut )

As I said, this is definitely one of my favorite boxes. :)

Stay tuned for photos of my trip down to Ashland, and some of the places I went and a list of all the plays I saw. :)

I'm trying to write a femslashex treat. Hopefully I'll be able to finish it and post it before the deadline since all that's left in this semester are finals and I'm only really worried about 2 exams. *crosses fingers* It's been forever since I've written something though, so it's slow going. What are words that aren't medical based?

I love reading articles on Pinterest about student loan debt, mortgage (let's be real, my student loan debt after grad school will be the amount of someone's mortgage), paying down debt, etc. I'm basically trying to keep myself afloat by doing some side hustles and whatnot, and I keep failing because I eat way too much fast food (stress eating because of school nomnom), but I try. I get a bunch of Walmart and Amazon gift cards from quite a few of my side hustles that I, in turn, use to pay for non-essential things so I don't have to use "real" money on them. Heck, I've even used those gift cards to pay for groceries/food, which is nice, and definitely have used them to pay for cat food and litter.

There are a few articles that touched upon whether it's a better idea to pay for a house entirely in cash or get a mortgage. There was one article where it sounds like a family did the former, paid for the entire house in one go, but the comments were negative about that, saying it was better to get a mortgage because your money could be making more if it was being invested versus used to pay off a house? And I get that makes sense, but only if you could make more money off that money. Frankly, I think I prefer paying off the house entirely (because if I get a house, I want to stay in that house for a long, long time) would be better for me because it's already guaranteed that I paid off my house. There is no guarantee I'll be able to invest that money to make more money (and I already know there's interest involved in a mortgage so I'm also losing money there).

Not that I'm anywhere near thinking about buying a house, not even close, but I like reading about it.

Where are the black ballet dancers? This article is from 2012, but I highly suspect that it's still relevant.

Taking this from [personal profile] ayebydan. Will put a text box below for those of you who'd like to do it yourself.

1.What bill do you hate the most? Uh, Graham-Cassidy? Currently. I'm sure it'll have competition shortly. (I don't know--was I supposed to say "electric" or "credit card" or something? Do you have opinions about your bills?)

2.Where was the last place you had a romantic dinner? At home. Don't usually go out unless it's a non-romantic (social, multi-person) event.

3.What do you really want to be doing right now? Sitting on my couch with a cup of coffee. Which I'm doing. (It's Saturday; this question is easy.)

4.How many colleges did you attend? Just the one for undergrad.

5.Why did you choose the shirt that you have on right now? It was on sale.

6.What are your thoughts on petrol prices right now? I don't drive. That said, recently Metro has increased prices by about 15% and cut my stations's service by about 40% during key commute times, so I'm not happy about the transportation situation generally.

7.First thought when the alarm goes off in the morning? "I've got to get to bed earlier."

8.Last thought before going to sleep last night? "I've got to get to bed earlier."

9.Do you miss being a child? No, not generally. But there are things I miss from my childhood--living in greater LA, swimming in an outdoor pool, having enough time to read until I got bored.

10.What errand/chore do you despise the most? I am embarrassed to say this, but the chores I really hate (i.e., scrubbing the shower, washing the heavy pots and pans) I don't do very often.

11.Get up early or sleep in? Sleep in.

12.Have you found love yet? All kinds. A partner, various family members, friends, and now children of friends. I have been lucky.

13.Favourite lunch meat? Peanut butter.

14.What do you get every time you go to Wal-Mart? Mmmm. No Walmart, but I do go to the grocery store almost daily (see "Don't drive" above). Frequent purchases: soy milk, greens for making a green drink, cereal, iced coffee.

15.Ocean or Lake? Not near either. :) Would I like to visit one? The ocean. Would I like to be stranded in one? A lake.

16.Do you think marriage is an outdated ritual? Mine is new-fangled--only legal since 2009 in the US state I was living in at the time.

17.What famous person (past or present) would you like to have dinner with? Hm. This one is always hard. Lately I'm less interested in famous people than the actual folks in my life. Let's say you: the flist-er I've never met but always wanted to talk to in person, or the one I haven't seen recently enough.

18. Have you ever crashed your vehicle? Once myself (a fender-bender while I was learning to drive); several times as the passenger when other people were driving.

19. Ever had to use a fire extinguisher for its intended purpose? No. Thank goodness.

20. Strangest place you ever brushed your teeth? Not sure I've ever brushed them in a place other than the bathroom. Is the question more geographical? Siem Reap, Cambodia. Never thought I'd get to visit.

21. Somewhere you have never been but want to go? Many, but just to pick one: Brasilia.

22. At this point in your life, would you rather start a new career or a new relationship? Gah! Restarting either would be devastating. I hope I don't need to do either.

23. How old are you? The age my parents were when I first realized they were looking older. Also older than the author of this meme, bless them.

24. Do you have a go-to person? Ah, how I wish I had a PA. Administrative work has never been my forte.

25. Are you where you want to be in life? On the couch on a lazy Saturday? Yes. Though I may go swimming at the gym shortly.

26. Growing up, what were your favourite cartoons? Scooby Doo. The Flintstones. The Jetsons.

27. What about you do you think has changed? My weight. My memory. My ability to stay quiet when Someone on the Internet is Wrong.

28. Looking back at high school, were they the best years of your life? No. Gah! I hope the best years of my life are still ahead of me, don't you?

29. Are there times you still feel like a kid? Always. (My two cents: you never stop feeling like a kid, even when the kids these days start driving you crazy.)

30. Did you have a pager? No.

31. Where was the hang out spot when you were a teenager? I studied as a teenager, as did almost everyone I knew. The teenagers I saw on tv were foreign creatures.

32. Were you the type of kid you would want your children to hang out with? No kids, so this is a little hypothetical. That said, I was the kid my friends' parents loved them to spend time with. I remember more than once a friend or acquaintance saying to me, "My mom is so glad we're getting to know each other!" At the time I took it as a compliment.

33. Was there a teacher or authority figure that stands out to you? I had several teachers in high school who coached various academic competitions (what my friends and I did for extracurriculars) who had a flattering level of faith in me. I still remember their confidence in my abilities; it meant a lot.

34. Do you tell stories that start with "when I was your age?" Embarrassingly, yes! Kids today *are* different--so much so I need to talk about it with them.

I would love to hear answers from all of you, especially if you haven't posted for a while. I miss chatting!

so, when i moved (yay for move being done *does happy dance*) i decided that i need a more simpler and easier life, and started to define that for me, since that is what living simply is all about, and also getting rid of much stuff. you wouldnt believe how much stuff i threw out- starting with papers, and ending with clothes and everything in between (but for books and plants because i like plants, and i dream of my own library and so having books around makes me calm).
but now my question:
christmas is coming, and ppl tend to give you stuff on christmas, which i would have to throw out, seing as i dont WANT it in my life, as stuff is clutter, and clutter drags me down. i also dont want clothes because i now know how many i own, and its INSANE, and i am still slowly going through sorting that out- after the big sort out i already had...
how much of a prat and evil person am i when i go and say to my nice family: know how for christmas you always give me nice stuff, please dont do that. instead i would like in no order of importance:

  • a nice trip for a day or something

  • special food i would never be able to afford myself

  • books- all the books, any books

  • vid-games: you know like overwatch- which i have been talking about forever, but its still so expensive and i cant spent that money right now... or some others of my list...

does this make me spoiled and ungrateful? i just dont want them to spend money on stuff i would throw away before the new year, really...

We have a window in our bathroom! (A skylight, technically, since the exterior bathroom wall slopes outward and is shingled.) Except I have yet to see the window, because it's on the front of the house and I came in through the back door when coming home tonight, and there's still a bathroom wall between the room and the window/exterior wall. Getting the actual window in was the only time-/weather-sensitive part, and [dreamwidth.org profile] scruloose and the contractor agreed that the drywall would stay intact for now. (I wasn't here for the discussion, so I don't actually know if that's because [dreamwidth.org profile] scruloose and I haven't finalized what we're doing with that part of the room (the extra floor space we could gain by removing the existing interior wall and just having the sloped wall), or because of time constraints, or because that's just not being part of what that contracting company does...? *shrugs* But we have a window.

K.B. Spangler has a new book out this week--one that's not connected to A Girl and Her Fed. (Digital only right now, but a print version is coming.) [twitter.com profile] seananmcguire wrote a short Twitter thread in response when Spangler announced the new book's availability; the key takeaway about the actual writing is "If you want some of the most elegantly written, internally consistent, funny, touching, TRUE science fiction coming out today, you should take a look at @KBSpangler. She's the real deal, y'all. She's writing shit that breaks every rule, and still works."

In related news, I just spent a vile amount on US-to-Canada shipping* to get a print copy of Rise Up Swearing (so far the only compiled volume of AGAHF) and a little pin of Bubbles, the Fed's digital clownfish...avatar? (I'm blanking on the correct word. "Avatar" is applied to something else in that 'verse, though, IIRC. Hmm.)

I was spared having to decide, in this time of "yes, I swear, I'm trying to cut back on spending", whether I was going to get a "Literalists do it with their genitals!" shirt; the shirt is currently unavailable (as in, no longer showing up on the site at all, not just out of stock). My wallet is grateful.

*Ordered directly from the AGAHF store, and she was as appalled as I was at the shipping cost. It wasn't surprising, though.

The first week at Casual Job is over--all two days of it! (Four hours yesterday and eight today.) I'm having some tech frustration at the office that would take ages to type up and is not terribly interesting, but I'll say that I really, really hope the person who sometimes does on-site IT support for us is around on Monday, because WOW, calling the help desk was useless. -_-

So far at Hal-Con I've seen several people wearing geeky shirts from stories I know, and things like a Sailor Saturn costume down in the mall food court. (A moment of respectful silence for the food court workers this weekend, who'll be slammed.) But the best was when Ginny and I were running down from work to get lunch and ran into someone in Tohru cosplay! The cosplayer mentioned that she was off to get her Yuki and Kyo, but Ginny and I were then unsure if she'd meant plushies of the boys in their cursed forms or fellow cosplayers.

Some details:
  1. London, Saturday October 21st, beginning early evening

  2. Meetup for drinks and fandom chat with fellow HP fans!

  3. Anyone is welcome, so long as you’re 18+ and fannish - you don’t have to know us in order to come.

If you’re planning to attend please click HERE and fill out this quick google form to let us know! The sooner the better, so we can get a headcount. If you’re thinking of attending but aren’t entirely sure yet, please do still fill it out asap; there’s an option to let us know that, and we’d hate to run out of room!

so on the job-hunt front so far nothing new... and sadly it gets depressing with how many of those firms don't even say that they dont need you (luckily most here do)

but on completely unrelated and better news: this cat finally got a healthy net connection! you do not know how much you need the net for the simplest things these days, until you dont really have the option. i am one of the fortunate enough to have a mobile contract where unlimited net is included- but after 2gb they cut it down to like 125bits a min and you have no imagination of how SLOW that is, it takes forever to load just one picture- this is also the reason i am behind on [community profile] hp_podfic_fest, but i will listen to the ones i didnt yet get around to.
edit: obviously i dont complain about time without net when i choose to be off the net- but for job search and application sending net is kinda the only way these days at least here..

on super unrelated news (because i am trying to make that a thing apparently)
thanks so much for lovely post-cards to [personal profile] themightyflynn, who sent me an adorable card from australia
and to [personal profile] enchanted_jae who sent me a very nice card from duluth- which fits perfectly in my ocean themed entry!!! thank you <3

and finally on different unrelated news: my muse is broken somehow, and i seem unable to fix her, which really is starting to get me broken too *headdesks*

but not all is doom and gloom so i shall go for the happy vipe and wish you a good time!

A bit latter than I originally intended; the airport in Panama didn't have power for over six hours when I was supposed to come back and a lot of flights got delayed and/or cancelled including mine. I had never truly appreciated how nice and cold airports are. Jeez it was hot!

But I survived my family vacations. No small feat this time since it actually included a hurricane. I'm so sorry if I worried you about this, I did keep in touch with LQ and Birds, and Eidheann, and best co-mods Grace & Cissa and they would have totally updated you if there was something to update. It was rather very stressful until the last day when it was really scary and then it was very busy doing all the things. Thankfully, I know we were extremely lucky in our foolishness. But! Hogwarts, and Hogsmeade, and Diagon Alley were wonderful, but it was crazy, crazy, crazy. ^^

Already running to catch up with life and work and fandom. I was supposed to have a buffer day after coming back but that wasn't possible and in fact it turns out I have to travel this Monday again for work which I was not expecting. It's holiday here, but not in the rest of my country and I totally missed that when I accepted and now, well, traveling in a couple of days and missing a day off. Boo!

I'm going to do my best to try and catch up. I'd throw a 'YAY HOME' but oh my god, I rather feel I need vacations from my vacations and I'm so not ready to be back. :O

But in better news, my nipples are on top of their form so I have that going for me. LOL

I missed you so much! ♥ ♥ ♥

I dropped my day classes! It is done. My advisor was super understanding while my professors were disappointed but also understanding. Fortunately other people's disappointment runs off me like water off a duck so I'm not worried. :3

I missed the signups for [personal profile] spook_me which is kind of disappointing but I'm not going to worry to much about it. I'm going to focus on Inktober (which I'm still really excited about) and not worry about signing up for other things. Even though Halloween is my favorite holiday and I really like doing fandom things to celebrate it. OH WELL. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Speaking of which, since it's so much easier to post things on instagram and twitter, I'll probably be posting Inktober things there before posting here. [twitter.com profile] nan_the_ghost and [instagram.com profile] heartfelt_ghost. They'll definitely get here! But not with the immediacy that those two platforms get.

--I want to say it feels weird to think that I'm going back to the office tomorrow, but it doesn't seem real enough yet to feel weird. (Having had only something like a week of work in the spring is not really helping. I'd barely sat down at my desk and then we were finished!) What does feel weird is thinking--hoping!--that when I get home tomorrow there'll be a window where there is now a solid wall.

--The first few days back are usually pretty reasonable. (I could conceivably even be home for supper tomorrow evening!) Thankfully, today I was able to finish and submit the half-volume that's due tomorrow, so that's not hanging over me...but I'll need to go pick up my and [dreamwidth.org profile] scruloose's con passes, and then on Friday, no matter what time we wrap up at the office, I'll be going straight from there to the convention. I even made it as far as looking over the schedule and making notes this evening, although in practice I rarely make it to more than a small percentage of the panels and talks that catch my eyes. So many people. O_O (The "rarely" applies to cons and similar things in general, as this is only my second Hal-Con.)

--When I was poking around in my tags the other day to see if I could figure out when I stopped bouldering, I came across this 2013 post about Claudia from when she and Jinksy were about five months old. Oh, my kitten. *^^* (*finds baby!Claudia!kitten icon*)

--I have this half-formed theory that Casual Job is the appropriate excuse to actually start figuring out lipstick, since I really haven't, despite buying a bunch in Toronto. The defense I have to offer is that I'm usually at home living in pajamas when Casual Job isn't on (I'm very glad I'm not one of the many people who needs to Get Dressed to successfully work at home--although if it'd help my focus, you bet I'd do it), and when I go out it's usually either quick errands (hard to convince myself to bother) or to have dinner out with someone (and I know people eat and drink with lipstick on all the time, but it turns out I find it intimidating to consider needing to immediately touch it up while out if it smears/wears off).
