As Some Of You May Know (Bob), I spent last weekend 'mum-sitting', i.e. spending the nights with my ex-boss's elderly mother, who has mild Alzheimer's; Suky wanted desperately to be able to get away for more than one night without worrying about her mother, so she booked me to stay there. (She lives in Walthamstow, but she's over there about every other day.) Anyhow, it seemed to go OK, though the travelling down to Mornington Crescent in that heat was exhausting; and she paid me in advance.

So I'd drawn out some of the dosh for spending money, and have topped up my Amazon account with a bit; Paypal's not too bad at the moment, so that can wait. But today I went up to North Finchleyand bought stuff; )

Only down point of the day, really, was that I found a mouse in one of the traps this morning. Obviously dead, so I had breakfast before disposing of it. I hope I'm not going to get another influx; it's been over a year since the last one that got in.

Usual sad note that not only have I never gotten a bingo on one of these, but I often don't manage even one fill--but I can't resist them. ^^; I keep hoping some inspiration will be jarred loose, and occasionally that even happens!

My [dreamwidth.org profile] hc_bingo card is under this cut )

At first glance I didn't see a whole lot of prompts there that work well with my usual-these-years fandom/ship, but on looking again, there are a few that I could theoretically do interesting things with, or that at least can be made to match WsIP that I expect to be on the shorter side if/when I can finish them. And my monofannishness aside, I do always hope that these challenges will twig something in my brain and let me write something new.

(Is this my first time getting an [dreamwidth.org profile] hc_bingo card that doesn't have one of the soulbond prompts? I haven't gone and checked to see if it's literally the first time, but the card generator has traditionally been very keen on giving me "unintended soulbond" and/or "unintended side effects of planned soulbond" [or whatever the exact phrasings are]. I always kinda meant to write the former for Warehouse 13; it could even happen someday. It's pretty perfect.)

And my [dreamwidth.org profile] seasonofkink card and Newsflesh-specific (inherently NSFW) notes are under THIS cut )

Hello lovelies,

Would anyone be keen to beta read my next Daily Deviant fic? It is Daphne Greengrass/Millicent Bulstrode, established relationship, underwater smut (coitus a unda (AKA undinism): sex in/under water) with a tiny side helping of curvophillia.

It is due on the 24th (it kind of snuck up on me with work being evil) so a quick turn around this weekend would be amazing!

Thank you!

Love,
Kitty.

Second week in a row with words! And I more than tripled my wordcount for the month! I will take whatever small victories I can get! :D

New words this week : 656 words which brings my monthly total to 959 / 2500. Nearly halfway there! Woo!

WIPs worked on this week : 1, no new WIPS (yay!)

HP
pwp : 656 words which brings the total to 981 so far. And omg in typical FTS fashion it's all set-up. I had estimated 2-3k for this but if we haven't even reached the smut yet I think I might up that to 4-5k instead.

I'm gonna try to use DW more often. I've been on tumblr a lot the last several months because it doesn't require me to word good, so I'm a little rusty.

1) Today is [personal profile] beanside and I's 14th wedding anniversary. We got hitched the same weekend that the Supreme Court struck down the sodomy laws, which is cool. For our honeymoon we ended up visiting my (homophobic) parents and sleeping on separate sofas, which in retrospect is that flavor of sad/hilarious. Sadlarious. It seems like both yesterday and forever ago, and I'm so grateful that we got hitched.
2) I discovered Japanese milk tea, the kind where the non-dairy creamer and sugar are already packaged in the teabag. The Earl Gray flavor is like a London Fog latte from Starbucks, and it is great.
3) Fuck, I don't know what to put for number 3. Um. T and I went to see wrestling live for the first time in like a decade for the last WWE PPV. I'd forgotten how uncooperative MD crowds are. It's like herding cats. WWE had to pipe in a lot of audio on the televised version to cover up the fact that the audience was, at one point, so bored by a match that we started fighting over which section got to bounce around a beach ball. It was a lot of fun.

I started watching Wynonna Earp during breaks at work and I love it. I didn't realize the show was basically Jessica Jones in a supernatural Western with sister and I am on board. I'm telling myself to not watch episodes when I'm at home, only when I'm out and about on breaks so I have something to watch, but it's hard. I think I'm episode 4 now? Yay for downloading from Netflix.

Not Prime Time has two more pinch hits for claiming.

I think I'm finished with my Wonder Woman femslash fic. I'm setting it aside to see if that's where I want to end or if I want to keep going with another scene. Now I'm looking at treats to write for Not Prime Time because I should be able to have time.

--With less than a month until Hugo voting closes, it's well past time to admit that there's no way in hell I'm getting even most of the reading done. ;_; (We've moved past "unfeasible" into "the idea is so ludicrous that collapsing into faintly-hysterical laughter is the only real option if I think 'but maybe if I--'" No. It is not happening.)

--To further illustrate how my reading is (not) going lately, [twitter.com profile] seananmcguire's new novella came out a week ago and I haven't read it yet. ;_; I've at least been keeping up with some graphic novels from the library, but that's about it.

--The adorable annual we're planting that I couldn't remember for the life of me is Hawaii Blue ageratum, AKA "floss flower". *charmed* Look how cute it is!

--A happy twofold discovery: while rummaging for something else, I found a small stash of Toronto transit tokens that we'd clearly forgotten about, and I was briefly sad because I'd had the impression that the Presto system rollout in Toronto was far enough along that tokens might not be usable anymore. (Horrifying thought, since the Presto rollout sounds like a clusterfuck in all kinds of ways--which strikes me as extra embarrassing when, as far as I can tell, Presto works fairly well in Ottawa, and unless I'm wrong about that, clearly it can be fine.) But I checked the TTC site, and the header on the "fares and passes" section says "Last year’s tickets and tokens are still valid. Customers paying with tickets and tokens do not need to deposit ten cents." [Emphasis theirs.] So we'll see about using our stash up.

--Related: one of the infinite things I love about having Claudia and Jinksy is that it's much less heartbreaking to come home from Toronto now that we have sweet, soft kitties waiting for us, but the flip side is that I preemptively miss them. I'd cling to them, but they don't like that. ^^;

(That said, Jinksy's currently purring on my lap. *^^*)

I didn't feel well today but I made it through work, then went to pick up some groceries. While I was there, I decided to check my blood pressure. 172/108 with a heart rate of 100. Y i k e s. I came home, took something, and it's okay now. This Thursday is the first anniversary of my dad's death. I'm pretty sure that has something to do with it.

Handel won in the GA 16th district. This is disheartening, even though it's not that surprising. I hate this state. The south would be a great place if weren't for the people.

Written on the Heart by who_la_hoop
r, 114k (Harry/Draco)

You know when one of your favorite writers writes a mega story and you get excited, and then it's just as good as you hoped? Yeah, that's this right here. At over 100k, it's definitely a long one, but it doesn't feel like it--it just feels like the story got the space to breathe, to be properly told. The story starts off with the Slytherins trying to befriend the Trio on the Hogwarts Express (their method is kind of a begrudging flash mob that just never leaves) and Harry being re-sorted into Slytherin. Then the three (and Draco) are hit by a not-so-legal soulmark spell. Ron and Hermione, unsurprisingly, wear each other's names, Draco has "Harry Potter" blazoned across his chest, and Harry has... no one. No mark, no name.

There is so much to say about this fic (and I'll try to keep it short, but pithy isn't really one of my strengths). In many ways, this story is about friendships, and changing long-held opinions of people. The camaraderie that develops between Harry and the returning Slytherins* is so nice to see and so fun to watch; Blaise in particular is quite the character.
*the gang's all here, yay!

With Draco and Harry, it's much more complicated. What does it mean to have an unrequited soulmate? What does it mean to know you'll never have "The One," or even the possibility of that? How can you handle being fated to be alone and unsatisfied? It's really interesting (and angsty) to see them working through these questions, especially when they start falling in love.

This is so well-written, and quite amusing at times. Also, it's delicious angsty, without being the type of angst where you just want to cry a bathtub full of pain. Do yourself a favor and read it!

Malfoy looks away from him. "Potter," he says, as if he's at the end of his patience. "I have your name around my neck. Is it any wonder I want to dissect you, and your emotions, alive on a slab? Give me something to work with here. Just a tiny deep dark secret you never though anyone else would know. Just to make me feel better."

Harry doesn't think Malfoy mean it. Except . . .

"I'm terrified that not having a mark means I'll never be loved by anyone again," he says.

This latest attack has hit closer to home than any attack before. I have students at Finsbury Park mosque; I have a student living on Seven Sisters Road; it’s two tube stops from me. There were friends-of-friends on Facebook whose mums go to that mosque and hadn’t heard from them yet; an old National Union of Students LGBTQ acquaintance goes there. Today has not been my best day ever. And given that both ISIS-inspired dickheads and Islamophobic terrorists seem to love attacking during Ramadan I am worrying a bit about Eid.

I keep thinking about the imam there, Mohammed Mahmoud. He’s just thirty years old, and he heard the crash and ran out. By then a group of men had the suspect pinned down, and they were beating him - incredibly scary, but understandable, given they’d just seen him mow people down. (And specifically mow down people who had circled round an elderly man having a medical emergency, wanting to help. I don’t understand.) And the imam yelled at them - don’t hurt him, just wait for the police. Then he and a group of others stayed there, protecting this person they’d just seen gleefully murder people they knew, for what must have been an endless eight minutes until the police arrived.

A few hours earlier I’d been watching Cursed Child again with two good friends.

HARRY: She’s a murderer, and we’re not.

HERMIONE: We have to be better than them.

RON: It’s really annoying but it’s what we learnt.

It's too hot here. ;_; My heat resistant tomato plant is melting, so I brought it indoors, and the master bedroom (though the vent is working and is blowing cool air) is too hot, so I'm seriously rethinking moving my computer desk in there. A much more cheerful post! (No pictures yet, alas, but I have been taking some here and there on my phone and plan to at least upload them to Instagram.)

[dreamwidth.org profile] scruloose and I spent most of the evening outside putting in more plants. Whew. We are almost done. Current status, off the top of my head (and, okay, off the front of the handful of tags I have on my desk, although I'm basically doing the annuals from memory and phone pics, since we've been putting their tags in the soil with them).

So here's the current state of things:

Shrubs: the Sensation lilac (the one that's been around for several years now) is doing much better this year, I think; it's almost like pruning it and paying attention to the soil make a difference! Its blooms are fading and browning now, though. And the Bloomerang had quite a few blossom clusters when we planted it, but they've all died off. (Which may mean it's time to prune [deadhead?] it now, to make way for any blooms it may offer up later this summer. That's the point of Bloomerangs, after all, but it's only the poor thing's first year, and we imagine being transplanted is rough on them.)

Edibles: all but three tomato plants are now in their final containers and have their halos/ladders/cages/whatever, and those three have been repotted in larger but still temporary pots; I don't remember the exact breakdown anymore, other than "we have one Sungold, we'll have one Sweet 100 (see below), and we have...some...Lemon Boy and Chocolate plants". I opted not to get either cucamelons or lemon cucumbers. (I don't know why I feel weird not capitalizing the names of tomato varieties but am okay with "lemon cucumber".) So it's a lot of tomatoes and the Raspberry Shortcake bred-for-containers raspberry shrub.

Perennials: we don't have many, since there's just the one bed in the ground and it's not very big. It has two Etiole Violet clematis, two astilbe (one each of Fanal [dark red] and Purple Candles), two bleeding hearts (one each of Valentine [red] and White Pearl), purple Arendsii monkshood (which turns out to be wolfsbane, so we have to keep the cats away from it when they're outside, as well as from the tomatoes), and a fiery orange butterfly weed.

That bed also has two Rose Splash phyllostachya (I think this is one?), which is an annual.

Annuals: the planted annuals are almost all in four matching rectangular containers, and we still have some left to put in. The exception is that so far all but one of the few planted-so-far marigolds are in Smart Pots with tomatoes, although it's very possible there isn't actually enough room in those pots for both the fruit and the flowers. We're doing science? Anyway, the marigold varieties are Bonanza Flame (orange with red) and Taishan Orange.

Otherwise, the annuals are Persian shield, impatiens (white), coleus (three kinds--one rust-colored, one deep red with pink streaks, and one burgundy with redder streaks), calendula (not planted yet, and also not blooming yet, so I don't remember anything about it), snapdragons (a tray of a mix and a tray of a deep violet variety), salvia (a single blue and a tray of deep burgundyish purple--apparently there are a bazillion kinds of salvia, but without the tags that's all I recall), a dark silvery sort of heuchera (which is a perennial, I know, but it's in with the annuals now...), purple lobellia... And there's at least one I can't remember the name of at all, which is...a lighter but not pale purple, and rather adorable. I may be missing others too. [ETA: the one I knew I couldn't remember is Hawaii Blue ageratum ("floss flower").]

Baskets (mainly also annuals): I don't know exactly what's going on in basket 1, because for some reason plant shops don't necessarily label them. Basket 1 (bought pre-planted) has pink-and-white fuchsia and something purple (I was told, but I forget--maybe some of you will recognize it. I think it's a common one) and something pink. Basket 2, also bought pre-planted, is the purple calibrachoa-not-chupacabra, hanging in place of the wind chime we bought and had up for a day or so before we decided it was too loud and the sound carried too far for our condo corp. (I don't know the exact variety, but it's something like this.) And basket 3, which we planted, has small purple Shadow Dancers fuchsia, lemon balm, and lemon thyme.

Still to do: buy more soil (not sure if we'll get potting soil or do another mix of black earth, rotted sheep manure, and peat moss [IIRC]); trade a Chocolate cherry tomato plant for one of [dreamwidth.org profile] ginnikin and Kas' Sweet 100 plants and plant the latter; if [dreamwidth.org profile] wildpear doesn't take both the unplanted Chocolate and unplanted Lemon Boy, plant whichever remains (although, happily, it sounds like she'll give them both a home); plant the remaining annuals in containers.

And in the fall I plan to buy heaps of bulbs and plant them all over the place (within the realm of possibility, which isn't actually that large), since [dreamwidth.org profile] wildpear says bulbs and perennials will cheerfully grow around each other, since they sprout and bloom at fairly different times. Mostly crocuses and daffodils, I imagine; basic bright things that'll lift my heart in spring. Heaven knowns Nova Scotian springs need it.

A thing that really, really irks me

I had an appointment with a medical specialist last week (details irrelevant for this, so I'm not getting into it, but nothing to worry about). He was someone I'd never seen before, and he was very prone to a thing that drives me completely up the wall at great speed, and it's something I'm faced with way more often than I'd like (not just with medical practitioners), so hey, I'm gonna tell you about it. Unsurprisingly given that lead-in, this is a bit ranty, so it gets a cut )

Alright, let me make an actual post instead of just fic and card claims, haha.

I spent all day watching the first half of season 14 of SVU so I could get more familiar with Barba's character (I have not seen most of these episodes! How have I already written fic, this is terrible!) and now I'm watching Fear the Walking Dead (which is actually interesting this season, what a shock!).

For original fiction writers, this showed up on my twitter timeline: JMS is having a submission call for Food of Love (LGBT romance stories). It sounds like a cute and fun call. :3

Facebook continues to be a mistake; one of my half-brothers contacted me. I'm super not interested in talking to this man. For one thing, we haven't spoken for at least 22 years. For another thing, he never reached out to my dad. My mom tried so hard to find dad's kids for him and she couldn't do it, and they certainly never reached out to us, and now dad is gone. I certainly don't have any interest in talking to pretty much anyone on my father's side of the family. Like, thanks but no thanks, you know? I dunno. I will probably just never respond.

Here's my entry for this year's [profile] wand_in_a_knot fest. The premise is really fun: each participant gets "tagged" by a previous participant and given a prompt. My prompt came from [personal profile] mywitch:
