Private Anniversary

“Minerva.”

“Good morning, Severus.” Minerva smiled as Severus settled into his customary seat at the head table. “Oh, and happy anniversary.”

Severus frowned. “Excuse me?”

Minerva tutted. “No need to be shy, Severus. I know how private you are, but Harry told me it’s your anniversary, so do enjoy it.”

Anniversary? Severus kept his face expressionless with effort. Harry said nothing about an anniversary this morning before he left for work. “Indeed.”

Minerva stood up. “I’ll see you later at the staff meeting.”

Mumbling an acknowledgement, Severus watched her go, then began wracking his brain to try to remember what anniversary Harry could have meant. Our wedding was in June, our first date was in October--

After a distracted breakfast, Severus walked to his Potions classroom, still deep in thought.

“Good morning, Severus.” Filius smiled as he passed him in the hallway. “I hear congratulations are in order.”

“Ah.” Severus coughed. “Thank you. Harry told you I presume?”

“Oh yes.” Filius shook his head. “I admit, it’s an odd thing to celebrate, but romantic. Oh yes, very romantic.”

Severus stared after Filius, puzzled. What in the world should we be celebrating?

And so it went all day. People kept approaching Severus, who grew more and more confused about what anniversary he should be celebrating. By evening, he was digging through Harry’s desk, searching for any sort of clue.

When the Floo sounded and Harry entered their sitting room, Severus was waiting. “What’s going on?” he snapped.

Harry smiled, slipping off his Auror robes and levitating them towards a chair. “What do you mean? Happy anniversary, by the way.”

“I mean that!” Severus crossed his arms. “What anniversary is it that we’re supposed to be celebrating?” He hesitated. “Have I...forgotten something?”

Harry’s smile softened and he moved towards Severus. “No.” He clasped Severus’ arms. “But it is the anniversary of the first time I saw you after the war. You were facing the Wizengamot, I was there to testify on your behalf, and you looked--”

Severus snorted. “I’m sure I looked terrible.”

“You were alive,” Harry said. “That was all I cared about. And in that moment I realised how important you were to me.” Leaning in, he kissed the corner of Severus’ mouth. “And then I asked you out. And you said no.”

“Of course I said no,” Severus said.

Harry laughed softly. “And you continued to say no until that night at the Weasleys’ Halloween party.”

“You kissed me that night,” Severus murmured, his arms going around Harry. “You were quite forward in fact.”

Harry laughed. “I thought I should start as I meant to go,” he murmured. “And I realised pretty quickly I wasn’t going to be able to keep my hands off you for very long. Anyway, it worked.”

Severus hummed, leaning in to cover Harry’s mouth with his. Their tongues slid together and heat sizzled between them. Raising his head, Severus smiled. “So, happy anniversary. Shall we move on to the celebratory portion of the evening?”

Harry licked his lips. “Most definitely.”
