Prized Possession

~

Severus had little growing up. Just enough food, clothing enough to cover his body, but never nice, new things. So when he was eleven, and his mother took him to Ollivanders, that was when he acquired his most prized possession.

His wand spoke to him when he picked it up. Awed, Severus clung.

Ollivander beamed. “It’s like finding a part of yourself you never knew was missing, isn’t it?”

Severus nodded and when Ollivander reached for the wand, he whimpered.

“Don’t worry, it’s yours.” Ollivander touched the wood gently. “It’s chosen you. Don’t disappoint it.”

Severus nodded. He wouldn’t.

Severus lowered his head, tears streaming down his face. Despite his efforts, Lily, his prized possession, was dead. Collapsing in the grass, Severus sobbed, drawing his wand. Its usual soothing presence was gone.

Alarmed, Severus shook it.

“You’ve misused it.”

Severus rolled, pointing up at Dumbledore.

“If you continue, it shall abandon you, too.” Dumbledore said, tone firm.

Slowly, Severus lowered his wand. “What can I do?” he whispered.

Dumbledore sighed. “I can help, but I fear it will take time. Perhaps a lifetime.”

Severus slipped his wand into his robes. “As it happen,” he choked out. “I have that.”

“...the Elder Wand isn’t mine, Severus,” the Dark Lord hissed. “It must be mine.”

“Naturally, my lord.”

“You killed Dumbledore.” The Dark Lord’s red eyes bore into Severus’. “That’s how the Elder Wand’s possession is transferred.” He held it up in his hand. “It’s my prized possession and yet it’s not truly mine, it’s yours.”

Severus’ eyes widened. “My lord--”

“I regret this, but it must be done. Nagini! Kill!”

Later, as Severus lay bleeding to death, his own wand in his hand, he felt its soothing presence. He smiled. Finally rest.

Then came Potter, and there was no peace.

~

“...not guilty! You are free to go, Professor.”

Severus, stunned, didn’t move. The crowd that had gathered to watch his trial buzzed, several people even clapped.

Potter, standing beside him, smiled. “Congratulations, sir.”

Severus couldn’t say a word. The Aurors who’d confiscated his wand, his prized possession, approached. One extended it to him. Accepting it, Severus closed his eyes as his magic, which had been faltering, flowed through him, suffusing his being once more.

“...have dinner to celebrate?”

Startled, Severus turned to face Potter. “Dinner?”

“Yes.” Potter looked hopeful.

Everything in Severus told him it was a mistake, yet... “Yes.”

~

“Place your wands side by side on the altar, please.”

Reluctantly, Severus obeyed, caressing his wand before drawing back. Harry seemed to have similar difficulty. Sharing a rueful smile, they turned to face the officiant.

“As your lives are joined, so is your magic.” As she spoke, the wands both started to glow.

It took all Severus had not to grab his prized possession and leave. The glow lasted only a moment, however, before fading.

“Congratulations, you’re now bonded. You may kiss to seal your bond.”

Leaning in, Severus pressed his mouth to Harry’s, and in his heart, magic sang.

~

“...good at getting out of scrapes, Severus. They were both top of the Auror class, after all.”

Severus ignored Granger, concentrating instead on the small thread of magic that, through their bonded souls and wands, could guide him to his most prized possession.

“...as Unspeakables, we haven’t combat experience--”

Severus stood. “I have him!”

“Finally!” Grabbing a small purse, Granger clasped his arm. “Ready!”

Severus raised an eyebrow. “I thought you advocating us waiting?”

Granger snorted. “I said that to give you time to find them. Now, what are we waiting for?”

Severus almost smiled. Harry’d chosen his friends well.

~

“You can’t go out there wand drawn, love.” Distracting Severus with a kiss, Harry pried the wand from Severus’ hand. “Lily will kill us if we ruin her wedding.”

Severus huffed. “I’m not ruining anything. I am just ensuring that Malfoy behaves properly.”

“Scorpius adores her.”

Severus snorted.

“You seriously don’t believe him?”

Severus sighed. “He’s a Malfoy.”

“I know, and trust me, if I’m saying he loves her, he does.” Harry leaned in. “She’s my most prized possession, too, you know.”

“Indeed.” Clasping Harry’s hand, Severus relaxed as Harry’s magic welcomed him, suffusing his being. “Very well. Lead on.”
