Going Home: Part Ten

“Would you really have made her wait for your answer?” Harry whispered as he and Draco stepped outside Lucius’ room to give Narcissa and Lucius some privacy.

“It wouldn’t have been that long.” Draco huffed. “But after what they did to us? Salazar, yes.”

Harry sighed, shaking his head. “The whole thing was just so stupid and unnecessary—”

“And unkind,” said Narcissa from behind them. When they spun to face her, she smiled. “I left Lucius to rest.” Focussing on Harry, she said, “You would be within your rights to say no, but please accept my apology for all we’ve put you through. We are so sorry.”

Harry inclined his head. “Mrs Malfoy, I won’t say there wasn’t a time I came close to hating you. But it was a long time ago, and I ended up with the love of my life because of it, so while I can’t say I have forgiven you, I can say I probably will eventually.”

Narcissa moved forward, hugging Harry. “Thank you,” she whispered. Drawing back, she looked at Draco. “And you, dear? How long do you plan to hold a grudge?”

Draco shook his head. “I think you’ll find Harry’s a lot more forgiving than I am, Mother.” He exhaled. “But I’m sure I, too, will forgive you someday.”

Narcissa bowed her head. “All we ask is a chance to show how sorry we are.”

“And for us to save Lucius’ life,” Harry added.

“That, too.” Narcissa looked up, her gaze penetrating. “Although, if you cannot, we’re aware it’s entirely our fault.”

“Damn right it is,” muttered Draco, turning away. Before he could move off, however, Narcissa grabbed his arm, clinging.

“Harry, would you give Draco and me a few minutes alone?” she asked, never taking her eyes from Draco’s. “We need to discuss some things.”

Harry looked back and forth between them. “Draco?” he said, an entire question in his tone.

Draco hesitated for a moment. “It’ll be fine, love. You go ahead.”

“All right,” agreed Harry. “Do you want me to bring your notes from home?”

Draco tore his eyes from Narcissa’s to look at Harry in alarm. “Don’t touch my notes!”

Harry smirked. “There you are. I’ll have Kreacher bring them, shall I?”

Draco sighed. “Thank you. Yes.” And under Narcissa’s watchful gaze, they kissed.

Hyper-aware of Narcissa, Harry kept it light and brief. “Right,” he said pulling away, “I’m off to Grimmauld. Do I have to go outside, or—”

“You can use the Floo at the end of the hallway,” said Narcissa. “I’ll be sure to set it to allow your magical signature when you’re returning.”

“And Hermione’s,” Harry reminded her. “She’ll want to examine Mr Malfoy.”

“I’ll add her magical signature to the wards,” Draco said. He raised an eyebrow at Narcissa. “That is, if I’m still allowed to touch them, what with being disowned.”

Narcissa eyes went flinty. “Take your time, Harry,” she said, tone firm. “Draco and I have much to discuss.”

Harry hesitated.

Draco nodded towards the Floo. “Go on, I’ll be fine.” He returned his attention to Narcissa. “Mother’s right. We need to clear the air.”

Patting Draco’s arm, Harry started for the Floo. As he was stepping into it, he saw Narcissa lead Draco into the room next to Lucius’. From the tension he’d felt between them it was probably better if he left them to sort it out amongst themselves anyway.

Harry landed in the street directly in front of Grimmauld Place. Once he and Draco had moved in, they had restored the Fidelius Charm and had made the place Unplottable, so no one could Floo inside, not even them.

Waving his hand, Harry watched the house reveal itself. In the window he saw Kreacher looking out, and as soon as their eyes met, the elf withdrew behind the curtains.

Harry sighed. He and Kreacher had come to a truce, but Draco was his favourite. Things were always awkward when Draco wasn’t there.

Squaring his shoulders, Harry marched up to the door, letting himself in. “Kreacher!” he called.

Kreacher appeared on front of him. “Yes, Master Harry?”

“I need you to gather all of Draco’s notes and take them to Malfoy Manor.”

Kreacher’s head popped up and his eyes went big. “Master Draco has moved out?”

Harry blinked. “No, not at all. His father’s sick, is all, and we’re looking for a cure. Draco needs his notes.”

Kreacher’s body language relaxed. “I will pack Master Draco’s notes,” he said, and moment later he was gone.

“Good to know you care about Draco, at least,” Harry muttered, shaking his head. Sighing, he walked over to the the fireplace. “Hermione Granger,” he said, tossing in some Floo powder.

“Hey, Harry.” Hermione’s face appeared. “Wait, are you home? Aren’t you two supposed to be on holiday at a remote cabin in the mountains? Has something happened?”

Harry laughed. “You could say that. I hope you have a minute, because it’s…complicated.”

“How complicated?” Hermione’s eyes narrowed. “And where’s Draco?”

Harry exhaled. “I hope you’re sitting down.”
