Sirius doesn't like there to be potentially unsympathetic witnesses when he does his hexing. :P had they been alone, I suspect all bets would have been off.
James would have been okay with it, I suspect. He's always backed Sirius up, for good or ill.
But, in this scenario, Kings was there and no way was he letting that happen.
