Survivors

~

Dumfounded, Severus stared at Albus Dumbledore. “You’re offering up Potter like a lamb to the slaughter.”

“It’s what’s required, Severus.” Albus smiled faintly. “Although I’d no idea you cared so much for Harry.”

Severus huffed, looking away. “Don’t be ridiculous. I don’t care for him. Is it so surprising that I assumed he would survive your scheme?”

Albus sighed. “It’s no shame if you care about him, Severus. After all, you loved his mother.” He coughed. “And he could have been your child had circumstances been different.”

Severus shuddered, horrified. “Ridiculous.” He gaze sharpened. “Now, about my killing you, Albus--”

“Have you heard, Severus?” Minerva smirked, her eyes cold. “Evidently Harry has evaded every trap set for him. He even escaped Gringotts.”

Severus huffed. “Potter is the consummate survivor, madam. Why his ridiculous stunts should surprise you is beyond me.”

Minerva rose. “They don’t surprise me, they make me proud of him. The more your master seeks to destroy him, the stronger he’ll get.”

“Indeed.” Severus sneered. “You may keep believing that if you choose.”

“I shall!” She swept out of the staff room, slamming the door behind her.

Once alone, Severus sighed. As shall I, Minerva. As shall I.

Severus’d hoped to survive the war, but as he lay dying in the Shrieking Shack, he realised that wasn’t likely. I wish I’d found a way to talk to Potter, explain things. Bloody snake.

As if in a dream, he saw Potter approaching. He’s grown up. “Look...at...me,” he whispered, forcing the relevant memories to the front of his mind.

Potter dropped to his knees beside him. “Don’t die!” His voice broke. “Please.”

He cares about me? Severus was weeping memories. “Must...take...them--”

Potter leaned in. “You must survive.”

But before Severus could reply, his world went dark.

~

“...must survive!”

Severus groaned. Who was shouting, disturbing his peaceful death?

“He’s awake!”

Opening his eyes, it took Severus time to assimilate what he was seeing. “Poppy. Minerva. Potter?” He gasped. “Voldemort--”

“Is dead,” Potter said. “Thanks to you.”

“You saw my memories.”

Potter nodded, smiling tentatively.

“I’m alive,” Severus whispered, amazed.

“Of course you’re alive.” Minerva was beaming.

Poppy chuckled and, patting Minerva on the the arm, led her away. “He’s too argumentative to die.”

Severus coughed, trying to sit up. “Indeed. Sorry to...disappoint.”

“I’m not disappointed,” said Potter softly as Poppy and Minerva conferred. “Welcome back, sir.”

With Potter’s testimony, Severus was exonerated of all crimes. And, to his surprise, Potter continued hanging about, making himself indispensable.

His recovery from Nagini’s bite took weeks although, according to Poppy, his precautionary measures of dosing himself with anti-venom saved him. “That was smart,” she said, scanning him with her wand. “You’re fine.”

In the hallway, Potter was waiting. “Is everything okay?”

Severus smirked. “I’ll survive.”

“Good.” Potter linked arms with him. “I didn’t go to all the trouble of saving you only to lose you now.”

Severus pondered all he’d done to ensure Potter’s survival. “Indeed. The feeling’s mutual.”

~

Over weeks, their relationship progressed beyond where Severus ever thought possible. And the night Potter stayed, Severus couldn’t stop touching him, as if reassuring himself that it wasn’t a fantasy.

“You’re a cuddler,” whispered Potter into the curve of Severus’ neck. “Brilliant.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.” Severus’ arms tightened around him. “I’m just ensuring that you...survived our encounter.”

“I’d say we both did more than survive, we’re thrived.” Potter’s hands began exploring Severus once more. “When can we do it again?”

“Insatiable.” Not that Severus minded.

Potter laughed softly. “Definitely.”

Severus smiled in the dark. Amazingly, he could only agree.
