An Open and Shut Case

“What’s wrong?” asked Hermione.
Looking up from his paperwork, Harry sighed. “We’ve that party at Malfoy Manor tonight, remember? I’m not looking forward to it.”
Hermione shuddered. “I don’t blame you. Have you told Severus you don’t want to go?”
“How can I? They’re his friends.” Harry’s tone went dry. “He comes with me to visit mine. If I start refusing to visit his, you may never see him again.”
Hermione laughed. “Point. Well, if you need to talk later, my Floo’s always open.”
“Thanks,” Harry sighed, picking up his quill once more. “I may take you up on that.”

Everyone at Malfoy Manor was bedecked with jewels. Harry, who’d thought himself overdressed, was glad Severus had insisted he wear his most formal robes.
Thirty minutes after they arrived, Narcissa demanded Harry dance with her, and, unable to think of way to refuse, Harry agreed. As they danced - Harry was pretty sure she was leading - Narcissa leaned. “You and Severus have been married for months.”
Harry nodded. “Yes, Madam.”
Narcissa laughed. “Call me Narcissa. So how...open are you?”
Harry frowned. “What?”
Cupping his arse, she squeezed. “Lucius and I are very...interested.”
Harry’s shriek could be heard for miles.

“I can’t believe she did that!” Harry paced.
In bed, Severus smiled. “Well, you’ve certainly made it clear that our marriage isn’t open.”
Harry huffed. “Why would she think that would be acceptable?”
Severus shrugged. “She probably doesn’t. Realise, Harry, that the Malfoys specialise in...disruption.”
Harry frowned. “What?”
“They love sowing dissent to see what happens. It’s...amusing for them.”
Harry sighed, settling beside him. “Did Lucius proposition you?”
“He has in the past.”
“What?!”
Severus smiled, drawing him close. “My answer was obvious.”
But later, lying awake, Harry realised Severus hadn’t actually said what his answer had been.

“What’s wrong?” asked Hermione.
“Can’t a bloke just chat with his friend?” Harry said. “You said your Floo’s open.”
Hermione raised an eyebrow. “It’s four-thirty in the morning.”
Harry smiled weakly. “Sorry about that.”
Hermione’s eyes softened. “What’s wrong?” she repeated.
“Narcissa Malfoy propositioned me tonight. And then I discovered that Lucius has done the same to Severus!”
“Well nothing happened, right?” Hermione’s eyes narrowed. “Right?”
“No! Of course not.” Harry sighed. “Certainly not with me and Narcissa.”
“You’re worried about Severus and Lucius?” Hermione shook her head. “Shouldn’t you be asking Severus this?”
“I agree,” said Severus. “Goodnight, Hermione.”

“You actually think I’m open to the idea of cheating on you?” Severus’ voice was even but Harry could hear the underlying hurt.
“No.”
“Then why confer with Hermione?”
Harry sighed, clasping Severus’ hands. Happily, Severus didn’t pull away. “You’ve been friends with them for ages. I just...if you’ve done stuff with them in the past it’s not my business, but it still bothers me.”
Severus blinked. “I’ve never had sex with any Malfoy, nor have I wanted to.”
“Never?”
“No.” Severus embraced him. “You’re the only one I want. Shall I show you how much?”
Harry exhaled. “Please.”
