A Dream Come True
~
Severus woke blinking. Hopefully that was intriguing enough, he thought. Potter’s determined, and Granger’s clever. Surely they’ll track me. Glancing at the clock, he saw it was almost time for his jailer to return. He growled. Trapped by an elf. Merlin!
“Headmaster has sweet dreams?”
Severus shuddered. “Pleasant enough.”
“Headmaster needs food?”
Severus ground his teeth. “What I need is to be released.”
“No, no! Headmaster will be hunted, he is safe here. I bring food.”
Severus sighed as the elf disappeared. Clearly he was trapped until someone released him. But would his experiment work or would Potter give up?
~
Upon putting himself back into a dream state, Severus was again in his memories. And Potter was already there. “We know you’re alive somewhere, sir, why won’t you just tell us where?” Potter said without preamble.
Severus sighed. Elf magic, so alien to wizards, made escape impossible, even in dreams or memories, but perhaps if he hinted it would be enough. “I don’t know where I’m being held,” he said. “That’s why I’ve reached out for...rescue.” He could feel the tug of the spell recalling him and he fought it.
Potter’s eyes widened. “How can I help?”
“Find me.”
~
Severus was preparing for another foray into dreamland when Potter’s voice echoed in his head. *Professor?*
Potter? Severus thought, startled. What are you doing?
Severus sensed surprise, then amusement. *Looking for you, sir. You said you’re trapped.*
Severus closed his eyes in order to concentrate. How are you speaking with me like this?
*I’m concentrating. Hermione thought that since I’ve spent so much time in your memories, maybe we’ve a bond.*
Severus frowned. The emotions being communicated by Potter’s thoughts were...complicated. Worry, concern and...attraction? He suppressed his instinctive reaction realising it wasn’t the right time. Indeed. Well, here’s what we should do--
~
“Headmaster dreams happy dreams,” the elf crooned.
Eyes closed, Severus maintained even breathing, relaxed posture. Potter was searching for him, and some part of Severus knew he’d find him. They’re Gryffindors. It’s what they do.
It chafed, however, being in need of rescue. But his body was still weak, drained. The only magic he’d been able to rely on had been his mental abilities. And I knew I could contact Potter because he’s right, we ddefinitely have a bond.
A sudden Apparation crack made Severus open his eyes. The elf was cringing and Potter, expression triumphant, stood there. “Snape! Finally.”
~
Severus woke to voices. “...dreaming right now, but once he’s awake I’ll inform him you’re here, Mr Potter.”
“Potter,” Severus whispered.
“Snape!” Footsteps approached and as Severus blinked sleep out of his eyes, Potter’s face appeared. “Good to see you awake!”
“You’ve been seeing me for days,” Severus reminded him.
“It’s better seeing you in person.” Potter clasped his hand. “I’m glad we found you.”
“Indeed.” Severus tried to reclaim his hand. “Your assistance was...appreciated.”
Potter smiled and clung. “Glad to help. So how did you communicate through memories?”
Severus sighed. “Well, I suppose you do deserve to know--”
~
It wasn’t a simple story, of course, and Severus had to explain himself to Minerva and Kingsley before he could talk with Potter alone.
“Hermione said we’d bonded.” Potter didn’t seem surprised when Severus explained how he’d used his mind’s link to his own abandoned memories to establish contact. “That’s why I’m...sensing things from you?”
Severus’ eyes narrowed. “Things?”
Potter’s face flushed. “Emotions.”
“Perhaps,” Severus said, looking away. “My apologies for any...inconvenience.”
“There’s no inconvenience.” Potter once again grabbed Severus’ hand. “I...kinda like it, actually.”
Severus blinked. He’s interested? “I never dreamed--”
Slowly, Potter smiled. “Me either.”
~
Hermione sighed, eyeing the board. “Chess is Ron’s game--”
Severus nodded absently, his attention focussed across the room where Harry was chatting softly with Weasley. While he enjoyed their Saturday night dinners with the Weasleys, he longed for bed. Still, he knew Harry loved socialising with his friends. And he tolerates Lucius, so I cannot complain. Living with Harry wasn’t perfect, but Severus was happier than he dreamed he’d be.
Harry’s heated gaze caught his. Severus smirked.
“Right, time to go,” coughed Hermione. “Ron!”
Once alone, they retired to bed and, wrapped around Harry, Severus smiled. “Sweet dreams.”
“You, too.”
