Cursed

“Grimmauld Place is trying to kill me,” Harry groaned.

Hermione patted his hand. “I’m sorry.”

“Why don’t you sell the place?” Ron asked from across the table.

“Because by law I’d have to disclose any curses on the place,” Harry said. “And no one would buy it.”

“Just leave it alone, then.”

Both Harry and Hermione stared at him. He flushed. “Fine, clearly a bad idea. Why?”

“It’s like leaving Hagrid in an exotic creature shop,” Harry finally said. “He needs supervision, and so does Grimmauld.”

Ron shrugged. “Then I guess there’s only one thing to do. Hire a Curse-Breaker.”

“I’d love to help, Harry.” Bill looked regretful. “But it’s a busy time of year. Real estate season, which means every estate agent wants us out there right now.” He checked his parchment. “I can’t get to Grimmauld Place for several weeks.”

Harry sighed, turning away. “Thanks anyway.”

“Although--”

Harry paused. “What?”

“I do have someone with time in his schedule. He’s still in training, but he’s very innovative. Brilliant, really.”

“I’ll take him.”

Bill smiled. “You are desperate. You didn’t even ask his name.”

Harry bit his lip. Uh oh. I won’t like this. “What’s his name?”

“Draco Malfoy.”

~

Wrinkling his nose, Draco inspected Grimmauld Place. “How long have you lived here?”

Harry sighed. “Ron, Hermione and I hid here during the war until we were tracked, so--” He shrugged. “Maybe six months?”

Draco shook his head. “It’s dismal.”

“Which is why you’re supposed to be helping uncurse it or whatever.”

“Or whatever?” Draco curled his lip. “That won’t make it any less dusty.”

Harry rolled his eyes. Fastidious git. “Kreacher!”

Kreacher appeared, and upon seeing Draco, he bowed. “A Malfoy! Welcome--”

“Yes, yes,” Draco muttered, pushing past him. “Tea in the parlour. Five minutes. And dust the room.”

~

Resentfully, Harry stared into his tea. How dare Draco give orders? Grimmauld Place belongs to me!

“Have you told the elf to identify what’s cursed?” Draco asked, interrupting Harry’s thoughts.

“No, I haven’t asked,” Harry snapped.

Eyebrow raised, Draco sat back in his chair. “What’s wrong?”

Harry set down the cup. It wasn’t the usual set, either. Kreacher had pulled out the Black china. “I don’t order him to do anything, I ask, so it’s not fair that--”

Draco hummed. “I see. You’re upset because he respects me more than you. Well, if you’d treat him properly--”

Harry saw red.

~

“I treat him properly! I don’t abuse him like you did Dobby at least--”

Draco’s eyes went hard. “Elves are difficult, Potter. Their function is to serve and they love doing it when expertly managed. I’m not advocating abuse.” He looked away. “I’m not my father.”

Harry flushed. “Sorry--”

“Shut up and listen.” Draco’s eyes bored into his. “Elves that work in ancient houses like Grimmauld take pride in their work. Look around. Something is making him not care about the place.”

Harry frowned. “Is Kreacher cursed?”

“Perhaps.” Draco sighed. “This will take time to unravel, Potter. I’m moving in.”
