Providing Inspiration

Severus eyed the man seated before him. “You’re sure about this, Mr Bowen?”
Bowen nodded. “Oh yes, Father. I’m called to be a priest. It’s divine inspiration!”
For a moment Severus envied him. He’d never felt such inspiration, only desperation. Suppressing that thought, he nodded. “Very well. I shall submit your name to the bishop for consideration. You’ll hear from the Chancellory.”
Beaming, Bowen rose and clasped Severus’ hand. “Thank you! And may I have a blessing?”
Sighing, Severus obliged, although he felt like a fraud. When Bowen left, he shook his head. Just one more. Thank Salazar. “Mr Porter!”
~
As the next applicant entered, Severus’ eyes widened.
“Hullo, Professor.” Harry Potter looked good in his Auror’s uniform. A bit too good for Severus’ peace of mind. “Sorry about the alias.”
Severus contemplated Disapparating but snarled as he realised his wand was in his rooms, buried in a trunk. He rose. “I won’t go without a fight,” he warned.
Potter held up both hands. They were empty. “I’ve no plans to take you anywhere.”
Severus’ eyes narrowed, and upon seeing the sincerity in Potter’s face he nodded sharply. “How did you find me?”
Potter smiled faintly. “Call it...divine inspiration.”
~
Collapsing into his chair, Severus sighed. “Sit.”
Potter sat. “I’m glad you made it, sir.”
Severus raised an eyebrow. Apparently Potter had matured. “Indeed?”
“Yes.” Potter leaned forward. “We searched for months. It was Hermione who thought to check religious orders for people joining about the time you disappeared.” He grinned. “You could say she was divinely inspired.”
Severus sighed. The insufferable know-it-all. Naturally. “I see. Why couldn’t you leave well enough alone?”
Potter shrugged. “I worried. Plus, I thought you’d want to have this.” He placed an object on Severus’ desk.
An Order of Merlin. Severus closed his eyes.
~
“Are you all right?” Potter sounded worried.
Severus opened his eyes. “Do you know how long I’ve wanted one of these?”
Potter smiled. “A while?”
“Most of my life.” Severus picked up the medal. Its green jewel, acknowledging Merlin’s Slytherin heritage, glittered. “Posthumous, I take it.”
“I persuaded the Wizengamot that it should awarded either way.” Potter coughed. “You know, in the event you turned up again some day.”
“More divine inspiration evidently.” Severus’ mouth turned up. “Is this the only reason you tracked me down?”
Flushing, Potter looked away.
Severus’ eyes narrowed. “I can see it isn’t. Tell me.”
~
Potter’s hesitation made Severus nervous. “Spit it out, Potter!”
Standing abruptly, Potter began pacing. “This is mad, but I keep thinking about it.” He ran a hand through his hair.
“About what?”
Potter spun, facing him. “You taught me Potions.”
“I recall,” Severus deadpanned.
Potter blushed. “No, I mean you in your book. But, even more than that, you taught me about...life. I learned how to think about things from that book. It was almost...divinely inspired.”
“Potter--”
“I’ve fancied the man in that book for years,” Potter confessed. “So I just need to see if he still exists.”
~
“He never left.” Severus almost smiled when Potter’s mouth dropped open.
Potter licked his lips. “Then I’d like to get to know you, if you agree.”
Severus sighed. “Returning to the wizarding world could be disastrous.”
“I’ve done my best to smooth the way.” Potter smiled. “Unless you’ve really been divinely inspired to take priestly vows?”
Severus snorted. “I Obliviated the bishop and his staff. I took no vows.”
Potter stepped closer. “Then maybe we could try it?”
“You assume I’m interested.”
Potter’s smiled deepened. “You haven’t thrown me out yet. From you, that’s practically a declaration.”
Severus smirked. “Indeed.”
~
“He was masquerading as a priest?” Granger sounded smug. “I knew it!”
Weasley sighed. “He always dressed like one anyway.”
Potter laughed. “True. Anyway, that’s why I’m on impromptu holiday, to get him re-acclimated to the magical world.”
“And to you,” said Granger.
Potter coughed. “That, too, yes.”
She hummed. “Inspired.”
Potter snorted. Moments later the Floo activated. Severus walked in as Potter rose from the fireplace. “You heard that?”
“Indeed.”
Potter smiled, clasping Severus’ hand. “Right. Let’s get to know each other.”
Fingers entwined with Potter’s, Severus felt contented. He smiled. Perhaps Potter reentering his life was divinely inspired.
