Promises and Riddles

~

“I have to go out, Fleur,” Bill called. “I’ll be back late.”

“All right,” Fleur called. “’Ave a good time with ze boys!”

Smiling, Bill threw Floo powder into the fireplace and stepped through. Immediately, he was caught in Severus’ wards, unable to enter his home. He frowned. I thought he’d added me--

“William.” Severus walked in, a stirring rod in his hand. “You’re back.”

“I told you I would be,” Bill said. “Didn’t you get my owl? I knew I’d be able to get away sometime this evening.”

“Indeed.” Severus pursed his lips. “And what does your wife have to say about it? Surely she’s beginning to suspect something?”

Bill shrugged. “She’s French. Even if she does suspect, she’d be fine with it, I imagine.”

“Would she?” Severus raised an eyebrow. “And what if I’m not fine with this?”

“What do you mean?” Bill tried to push against the wards but they held. “Let me in, Severus. We want each other.”

“That is true.” Severus regarded him for a moment. “But perhaps that’s not enough.” Putting down the stirring rod, he crossed his arms. “Perhaps I feel I deserve more.”

“You want me to leave my wife?” Bill asked, eyes narrowed. “My child?”

“No, I suppose I cannot ask that.” Severus moved towards the fireplace. The shimmering wards made his face a bit hazy, but Bill could still see the glint in his eyes. “All I want, all I ever wanted, was to mean something to you, William.”

“You do!”

“Do I?” Severus shook his head. “Very well, then answer a question. A...riddle if you will.”

Riddles? Typical. Bill sighed. “You’ve the upper hand. Go ahead.”

Severus stepped closer. Bill saw a faint smile on his face. “What gets broken without being held?”

Bill blinked. “I have no idea. And what does this have to do with us?”

Severus smiled faintly, but his eyes were cold. “Nothing, I suppose. But I’ll tell you the answer. It’s a promise, William. Something neither of us made to each other, but something you did make to your wife, and by extension, your child.”

“Severus--”

“Go, William.” Severus turned away. “You’re not welcome here anymore.”

“Sev--” Bill was thrown backwards. He landed on his back in his own living room.

Footsteps hurried towards him. By the time his vision cleared, Bill was staring up into Fleur’s amused face. “You ’ave not been gone zat long. ’Ow is it zat you are already drunk?”

Bill shook his head. “I’m not, I just changed my mind and decided I wanted to spend the evening with you and Victoire.”

“Oui?” Fleur’s smile widened. “Zen come ’ere. Ze baby is asleep. Per’aps we can have some fun?”

And as Bill rose to go with her, he sighed, glancing at the Floo, faintly regretful. Perhaps Severus had been right. “Brilliant idea.”
