Maintaining Law and Order

Signing the last parchment, Kingsley sighed. His office, located in the top floor of the Ministry, had walls charmed to look like floor to ceiling windows. It probably had the best view in the Ministry, if not London. Yet all I want is to be out there, solving crimes, maintaining law and order.
He turned, facing his personal Auror-guard. “Any new, interesting cases going on in your department, gentlemen?”
“No idea, Minister,” said Miller. “We just guard you.”
The other one, Smithers, nodded. “Sorry, sir.”
“Ah.” Kingsley sighed again. I need information or I’ll go mad. “Get me Potter, please.”
~
“Minister,” Harry said, entering Kingsley’s office. His new Head Auror badge glinted brightly. “What can I do for you?”
“I thought I could go out on some cases, help with threat assessment.” Kingsley smiled at Harry’s startled expression. “Surprised? Surely you knew this job wouldn’t keep me occupied forever? And really, I’m an Auror at heart, Harry. Upholding law and order is what I love to do.”
Harry sighed. “I don’t think that’s possible, Kingsley, I’m sorry. Maybe if you weren’t Minister for Magic. You’re far too important to risk in the field.”
Kingsley hummed. I won’t be Minister forever.

“Retire?” Percy, his secretary, gaped at him. “You can’t, sir!”
“Why not?” Kingsley stood before of one of his windows, surveying London. “I only did this because the wizarding world needed a Minister after the war, and I was the least offensive choice.”
“But now you’re the most beloved Minister of modern times,” Percy interjected. “Think of all the good you could do.”
“My heart’s not in it, I’m afraid.” Kingsley sighed. “I’m an Auror, first and foremost. I believe in law and order, not politics.”
“But then who’ll be Minister?” Percy asked.
Kingsley smiled. “I know just the person.”
~
“But why me?”
Kingsley smiled. “I’ve long thought you’d bring a unique perspective to the position, actually. And you’re one of the most brilliant people I know.”
“I don’t know--”
“I do.” Kingsley pursed his lips. “And I don’t doubt you’d be a very capable Minister. What we need is to get you elected so I can get back to what I do best.”
“And what’s that?”
“Preserving law and order.” Kingsley leaned across the table, clasping his wife’s hand. “So, will you consider campaigning so that I don’t have to?”
Finally, Hermione sighed and nodded. “All right. I’ll try.”
~
“You won!” Harry was beaming. “Hermione, that’s brilliant!”
Hermione, looking a bit gobsmacked, shook her head. “I still can’t believe it.”
“I do,” said Kingsley, standing behind her. “And it’s about time we had a Muggle-born Minister for Magic.”
Hermione smiled at him. “I’m sure it helped that you ran my campaign.”
Kingsley leaned in. “I also plan to supervise your personal security, Minister.”
“But only at night, right?” Harry was grinning. “Because I’ve cases all ready for you, Kingsley. Wizarding law and order awaits.”
Chuckling, Hermione hugged Kingsley. “Enjoy, dear. Just try not to be too late for dinner.”
