Finding Love
~
“Love you, Mum,” Severus whispered.
Eileen tried to smile. “I love you, too, Severus.”
With trembling fingers, Severus gently touched the still livid bruise on her face. “We should leave,” he said, swallowing back tears. “We’ve magic! He’ll never find us.”
Eileen sighed. “I can’t. He’s still my husband.”
“How can you still love him?”
Eileen’s eyes widened. “You’ll find love isn’t always logical.”
Severus looked away. “I’m never falling in love!”
Cupping his face, Eileen stared into his eyes. “You’ll be a great wizard, Severus, but promise me you’ll let yourself love, too, all right?”
“But--”
“Promise me.”
“Fine.”
~
“Severus!” Lily ran towards him. “I got my letter!”
She was radiant. Severus’ heart clenched; he swallowed hard against the lump in his throat. “Me, too!” he said. “You see? I said it’d be all right!”
Exuberant, Lily hugged him. Severus closed his eyes, inhaling deeply.
“You did,” she whispered. “I’m so excited!”
Clasping his hand, she drew him to the river bank, and as she babbled, Severus tried to listen. Her touch was too distracting, however, and finally he gave up. He was hers and she was his and that was all that mattered. Mum was right. Love’s brilliant.
~
“Forget that Mud--”
Severus’d never drawn his wand so fast. “Shut. Up.”
Rosier backed away. “Whatever, Snape. Just...quit worrying about that little nobody. She’ll get hers.”
Severus lowered his wand slowly, turning back towards his bed. Bloody dungeons, always so cold--
“She’ll forgive you eventually.”
Severus looked up to see Regulus watching him carefully. “Who says I care?”
Regulus smiled. “We only get that upset about people we love.”
Severus huffed. “Leave me alone.”
“Okay.” Regulus moved closer. “Or we can...talk.”
Something in Regulus tone made Severus blink. “About?”
Regulus’ smile deepened. “Oh, we’ll come up with something.”
~
Severus had lost so many to Voldemort: Regulus, Lily. And yet, watching Harry grow up strong and brave, he could almost consider their sacrifices worth it.
“You like him.”
Severus winced, turning away from the window. “Pardon me?”
Dumbledore smiled. “You like Harry. You probably won’t ever admit it, but you do.”
“Don’t be ridic--”
Albus held up a hand. “One day you’ll come out and admit it.”
Severus snorted. Albus was the father he’d never had and he loved him, but he was quite mad. “Whatever. Now show me your hand so I can try to create an antidote--”
~
“Things must be going well.”
Severus tore his gaze from Harry, blinking at Hermione. “Excuse me?”
Hermione nodded towards Harry. “I’ve seen how you look at each other.”
Severus stiffened. “I’ve no idea what--”
“It’s fine, Professor. Harry’s been discreet about what’s going on between you, but I’ve known him too long to be fooled.” Hermione moved away. “Just...be gentle, all right? He’s not accustomed to love...working out.”
And I am? Thoughtful, Severus watched her walk away.
“Severus?” Harry approached quietly. “Everything all right?”
Perhaps this time it’s safe to love. Severus clasped his hand and smiled. “Indeed.”
