Satisfaction Guaranteed

~

“I’d consider it a personal favour.”

Kingsley sighed. “I can watch Draco Malfoy, although it would help if you’d tell me what I’m watching for. Is he likely to do something unexpected?”

Dumbledore smiled. “One never knows, does one?”

Kingsley narrowed his eyes. Dumbledore being cryptic was...dangerous. “Isn’t it Snape’s job? Or yours?”

“I shan’t be here forever,” Albus murmured. “And Severus’ hands are full monitoring Harry, I’m afraid.”

Kingsley gave up. The outcome’s inevitable anyway-- “Of course I’ll watch him for you, Albus.”

“Excellent.” A look of satisfaction crossed Albus’ face. “I appreciate it. Now, about the Order--”

~

“Albus knew he was going to die.” Kingsley shook his head. “He must have.”

Remus sighed. “I imagine so.” He eyed Kingsley. “Did Albus give you any...special assignments before he died?”

Kingsley pursed his lips. “Why do you ask?”

Remus smiled in satisfaction. “He did, I can tell. You don’t have to tell me what it was. I think he gave us all assignments.”

Slowly, Kingsley nodded. “That’s probably true. Unfortunately, mine appears to have disappeared, along with Severus.”

Remus frowned, then his face cleared. “Oh! Draco, hm? He’ll be difficult.”

Kingsley pursed his lips. “Yes, I suspect so.”

~

“Why are you here, Kingsley?” Severus looked terrible.

Kingsley coughed. “Doing my assignment.”

Severus drew his wand and Kingsley tensed, but relaxed upon sensing a Silencing Charm. “The walls have ears.”

Kingsley nodded. “Your...colleagues seem--” He paused.

“Unpleasant is the word you’re looking for.” Severus smirked. “This office is my retreat and I won’t give them the satisfaction of seeing me worry.”

Are you worried?”

“Naturally.” Severus crossed his arms. “Now, why are you here?”

“Albus asked me to watch Draco.”

Severus sighed. “That meddler. Well, at least your assignment’s easier. I’m to watch Potter.”

Kingsley smiled. “Good luck.”

~

“Who’s there?” Draco, showing better instincts than Kingsley had expected, spun, wand out. “Show yourself!”

Slowly, Kingsley emerged from the shadows.

Draco’s eyes widened. “Wait, I know you! You’re an Auror!”

“Auror Shacklebolt.”

Draco’s eyes narrowed. “Who sent you?”

Kingsley smiled. If only you knew. “Someone who’s concerned with your welfare.”

Draco lowered his wand. “So you’re my bodyguard?”

“Of a sort,” Kingsley said.

Draco huffed. “I can take care of myself.”

“Perhaps.” Kingsley moved back into the shadows.

“Wait!” Draco licked his lips. “How do I...call you if I do need you?”

Kingsley smiled, satisfied. “I’m always watching.”

~

“Auror?” Draco whispered. “You there?”

Kingsley smiled. Draco knew he was there. He visited weekly, allowing Draco to spot him the first few times. After coming to know Draco’s schedule (Draco strolled the lake every Sunday evening), and Kingsley watched, listened.

“It’s getting harder to stay silent,” Draco continued. “The Carrows won’t be satisfied until they hex everyone at least once, the Gryffindors are in revolt, and every day things get harder. This was supposed to be about learning to be brilliant wizards but instead everyone’s so frightened--”

Kingsley sighed. “Have faith,” he murmured.

Draco closed his eyes. “I’ll try.”

~

As the Battle of Hogwarts raged, Kingsley guarded Draco. His satisfaction at locating him morphed into concern when he lost track of him. When Draco reappeared, he was filthy and dazed. “Draco.” Kingsley relaxed.

Draco blinked. “Auror?”

“Call me Kingsley.” Kingsley pulled Draco out of the line of a hex. “Everything all right?”

Draco nodded. “Yes. But my parents--”

Kingsley steered Draco into the castle. “They’re this way.”

Upon spotting Draco safe, Narcissa hugged Kingsley. It was when Draco hugged him, however, that Kingsley began to wonder about Albus’ plan. Did he want me for Draco, or Draco for me?

~

“Potter even testified on his behalf,” Kingsley said to Chief Mugwump Poole.

“True,” she replied. “But he’s a Death Eater--”

“He has no Mark.”

Poole sighed. “I’m aware. You seem determined to see him freed, but the public’s adamant that Death Eaters and their families be punished.” She grimaced. “Justice.”

Kingsley inclined his head. He was well aware of what the public considered ‘justice’. “Public service?”

“Who’d take him?”

Kingsley bit his tongue. Hard. “I offer myself.”

Poole pursed her lips. “All right. But he’ll need proper supervision.”

Kingsley smiled in satisfaction. “Don’t worry. I’ll give him plenty of that.”

~

“You’re responsible for me?”

Kingsley nodded. “I have been for a while, actually.”

“Point,” Draco murmured. “How long’s this going to last?”

“As long as the Wizengamot deems necessary.” Kingsley smiled. “The current estimate appears to be a year.”

“Oh.” Slowly, Draco smiled. “What’s this going to entail?”

Kingsley held Draco’s gaze steadily. “Whatever we want.”

“Finally,” Draco breathed, launching himself at Kingsley.

Gathering Draco close, Kingsley closed his eyes. “Exactly.”

Later, as Draco sighed and stretched in Kingsley’s arms, he murmured, “I don’t think the public would be satisfied that this was proper punishment.”

Kingsley laughed. “I’ll never tell.”
