Heart to Heart

~

“Things must be getting serious with Potter.”

Startled, Severus looked over at Draco. “Why would you say that?”

Pursing his lips, Draco began decanting. “Because you never talk about him.”

Severus frowned. “That makes no sense.”

“It makes perfect sense.” Draco smiled. “I’ve known you for years, Severus. You don’t talk about anyone who’s truly important to you.”

Snorting, Severus looked away. “Is there a point to this heart-to-heart chat?”

Draco threw up his hands. “Fine, be like that. I just wanted to say--”

“What? That you’re disappointed?”

Draco sighed. “That I’m happy for you. Now, about this potion order--”

~

When Severus got home, Harry was waiting. “How was business today?” he asked.

Severus hummed. “Nothing especially unusual happened. Why?”

Harry coughed. “Draco Floo-called earlier.”

Severus froze. “Oh?” he asked, striving to sound casual.

“Yes.” Slowly, Harry approached Severus. “He wants us to get together for a drink, have a heart-to-heart about you.” He touched Severus’ arm. “Is there something I should know?”

Severus huffed. “Other than that Draco’s a meddler?”

Harry laughed.

“Are you going to meet with him?” Severus asked.

“Sure.” Harry shrugged. “Is there any reason I shouldn’t?"

Severus sighed. “As you wish,” he said reluctantly.

~

Severus waited until Harry left before following discreetly, and as he entered a small pub, Severus Disillusioned himself, walking in behind him.

Draco was waiting at a booth in the corner. As Harry approached, he stood. “Thanks for meeting me, Potter.”

Harry inclined his head. “Sure.”

They sat and after they’d ordered drinks, Draco got to the point. “I’m sure you’re wondering why I asked you here to have a heart to heart about Severus.”

“I’m curious, yes.”

Draco smiled. “He’d probably kill me if he heard me say this, but it’s information you need.”

Eyes narrowed, Severus braced himself.

~

Harry, too, seemed suspicious. “I believe I know Severus pretty well.”

Draco sighed. “I can see why you two get along. You’re both so prickly.” He leaned forward. “Look, Severus is happy. I just don’t want to see him lose that.”

“All right,” Harry agreed, tone cautious.

Draco coughed. “What you need to know about Severus is that he’s--”

Harry held up a hand. “I get that this heart-to-heart was to help me understand Severus better but...I think I’ve changed my mind.”

“What?”

Smiling, Harry stood up. “I’ll figure Severus out on my own, thanks. Thanks for the drink.”

~

Severus exited the pub a minute later, shocked that Harry hadn’t opted to hear Draco out. I don’t know that I could pass up the opportunity to hear secrets about Harry if Granger or Weasley offered to have a heart-to-heart with me about him.

Harry was waiting outside. Surprised, Severus paused.

“I know you’re there,” Harry said, staring straight at him.

Severus cancelled the Disillusionment Charm. “How?”

Harry smiled. “I sensed your presence.”

Severus snorted. “No, really.”

Harry’s smile deepened. “We Aurors are suspicious sods. Always scanning for eavesdroppers.”

Severus coughed. “So, you’ll meet with Draco another time?”

“No.” Harry clasped Severus’ hand. “There’s no need.”

~

Severus collapsed, heart racing after their exertions, Harry draped across his chest.

Despite Harry’s reassurances, Severus was still pondering what secrets Draco could’ve wanted to share. Perhaps my possessive nature? Or maybe how obsessed I was with Harry for months before daring to ask him out--

“I must not’ve done that right if you’re so preoccupied while lying heart to heart with me,” Harry murmured. “Should I try again?”

Severus snorted. “If you think I can do that again right now--”

Harry laughed softly. “What if I do the work?”

Severus smiled. “Acceptable.”

Straddling him, Harry grinned. “Glad you agree.”
