Candy Cane Connection

Severus wasn’t about to admit that Potter, holding a puppy with a Santa hat on its head, was just about the most adorable thing he’d ever seen. Definitely not. Although he did start to wonder just how far down that delicious blush on Potter’s face went. “I got your card.”
Potter blinked, then, as if just recalling he was carrying a squirming ball of fur, he set the puppy in a basket and licked his lips. “I’m sorry?”
I’m not. Severus swallowed hard, looking away. Potter looked even better in person than he did in the photo. And that was saying something since he was wearing a candy-striped apron and he’d looked bloody marvellous in the photo. Severus coughed. “Your card. The one you sent. I’m not sure why you sent it, but I received it.”
Potter frowned. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Reaching into his pocket, Severus pulled out the card, which he replaced in its envelope to make him stop staring at it. “This,” he said, setting it on the counter.
Tentatively, Potter picked up the envelope. When he drew out the card, he blanched. “Oh fu--”
“Exactly,” Severus interrupted. “As I said, I got your card.”
Pushing the envelope away, Potter pinched the bridge of his nose. “I didn’t send this to you.”
Severus raised an eyebrow. “Are you saying that you’re not one of the men in that photo?” he snapped. “Because the one on the far right bears a striking resemblance.”
“No!” Potter paused. “I mean yes that’s me, but no, I didn’t send it.”
Potter practically oozed sincerity. Severus’ eyes narrowed. “You expect me to believe that a random stranger sent me a provocative photo of you out of the blue?”
Potter shrugged. “I’ve no idea how you got it. All I know is that I didn’t--” He paused, eyes going wide.
“What?” Severus snapped.
“Hermione.”
Severus crossed his arms. “What does Ms Granger have to do with this?”
“She’s the one who insisted we take the damn thing in the first place, and then, when Ron and I tried to destroy all the copies, they disappeared.” Potter groaned. “I’m going to kill her. I wish I’d never told her how I--”
“How you what?” Severus asked.
Instead of replying, Potter bit his lip hard and, looking around, spotted a jar of candy canes. Reaching for it, he popped one in his mouth before offering Severus the jar. “Sorry. I’m not being very hospitable. Candy cane?”
Now what are you trying so hard not to tell me, I wonder? Smirking, Severus reached for one. “Indeed. I have fond memories of these from my childhood.”
Unwrapping it, he slowly slid it in and out of his mouth, humming in pleasure as the peppermint flavour burst over his tongue. He kept his movement slow and even, mesmerising. After a few passes, he pulled it entirely out and licked the tip.
Potter seemed to be having trouble breathing.
“Are you all right?” Severus asked solicitously, leaning forward and staring into his eyes.
Potter cleared his throat. “Erm, sure.”
Severus hummed again. “So what was it you wish you’d not told Ms Granger?”
Potter, on a bed, wanking, a picture of Severus in his hands...Potter, watching Severus from afar...Potter, clapping as Severus received his Order of Merlin...Potter, confiding his crush to Granger and a slightly green-looking Weasley...
Potter blinked, breaking their connection. “Hey, are you trying to Legilimise me?” He crossed his arms. “That won’t work on me, you know. I’m an Auror trainee.”
Trying and succeeding. “Certainly not.” Severus began thrusting the candy cane rhythmically in and out of his mouth. “If it seemed as if I was it was entirely an accident, I assure you.” He smirked. “And really, what could I have seen?”
Potter blushed, looking away. Picking up the puppy, he cuddled it close. Severus wondered who was comforting whom. “Anyway, I didn’t send that card.”
“Indeed.” Severus, having seen enough, slipped the rest of the sweet into his mouth, chewed and swallowed it. “Well, then it seems we have a mystery on our hands, Potter. Perhaps you’d like to go to a pub with me later to discuss what should be done about it.”
Potter’s eyes narrowed. “Are you asking me out?”
“It would appear so.” Despite what he’d seen in Potter’s mind, Severus felt a small frisson of fear. Perhaps he’s no longer interested, perhaps I waited too long--
A slow smile spread over Potter’s face. “Brilliant. Let me just get the puppies all settled and we can go. It’s closing time anyway.”

Date: 2013-12-04 07:22 pm (UTC)Yeah, Harry may have overestimated his abilities. Or did he? *wg*
And yes, Severus was rather extreme with that candy cane, wasn't he? Whew!
Thanks, hon!
