The First Snow Wish
~
Grandma Molly wraps a scarf around Lily Luna’s neck, the final piece to her outfit. “There,” she says, patting the top of Lily’s head as if she’s a kid. “You’re all set to go outside and you’ll stay nice and warm.”
Wrapped in layers, Lily knows it’s useless to argue that she’s old enough to warm herself and that she’s magical anyway, so she simply nods.
But Grandma Molly always knows what Lily is thinking. It’s a bit irritating, to be honest. Bending down, she looks directly into Lily’s eyes as if peering inside her. Lily swallows hard.
Grandma Molly’s expression softens. “I know you’re worried about your daddy, sweetie, but he’ll be fine.”
Lily glances towards the sitting room where Daddy is talking to Uncle Ron and Aunt Hermione. She knows something serious is going on because Grandma Molly wants her out of the house so desperately, and because everyone is being so careful about what they say around her. “I know,” she says, trying to reassure Grandma Molly.
Inexplicably moved to do so, she hugs Grandma Molly and when she moves back, Grandma Molly has tears in her eyes. “You’re just like your mother,” she whispers.
Lily knows this is a dangerous topic. Whenever anyone starts talking about Mummy they start to cry. Lily doesn’t understand it because it’s not as if she’s gone anywhere. Lily feels her every day.
Grandma Molly sniffs. “All right,” she says, steering Lily out the door. “Go and play. By the time you get back there will be Christmas cake. Be careful not to fall. And don’t bother the gnomes.”
Lily nods and, once Grandma Molly’s back is turned, heads straight for the gnomes.
Sadly, they are dormant since it’s so cold. Even when she pokes gently at them with a stick they ignore her and so, bored, she wanders down to the lake.
It’s covered over with a thin sheet of ice, and Lily can tell it wouldn’t be nearly as much fun to fall into now as it is in the summer. With a sigh she turns away and amuses herself kicking dirt.
*Your daddy is lonely*
As usual, Mummy’s voice comes from all around her on a breeze and Lily doesn’t bother to look for her, knowing she can’t actually see her. “I know,” she says.
*He’s found someone that makes him happy*
Lily has guessed as much. He’s been different the past few months, happier. She nods.
*Be sure to support him, show him that you love him*
“Of course I love him,” mutters Lily.
The breeze seems to laugh around her. *You’re growing up so fast without me, my Lily flower*
Lily shrugs. It’s what she’s supposed to do, isn’t it? Grow up and go to Hogwarts and be a strong, pretty witch like Mummy?
*And you will be* The breeze seems to hesitate. *The first snow is coming*
Lily’s head snaps up and she stares into the sky. “I get to make a wish,” she whispers. Years ago Mummy had taught her the secret of making a wish when the first snowflake of winter touched her tongue and she still remembers it.
The day is cloudy, the air heavy with possibilities. *Make it a good one, Lily flower*
Lily nods. I will.
Spreading her arms, she sticks out her tongue, and when the very first flake lands on her tongue she thinks, I wish for Daddy to be happy and not lonely anymore.
“Lily Luna?”
Wincing, Lily turns to see Grandma Molly waving from the back door.
“Come inside, dear. It’s starting to snow.”
Obediently, Lily skips towards the Burrow, and once inside, Grandma Molly unwraps all her layers she’s bundled in. She sees the Christmas cake cooling on the counter and her mouth waters.
Uncle Ron and Aunt Hermione are there, too, and they immediately stop talking as soon as she arrives, although they look upset. “Your daddy is in the living room,” Grandma Molly says softly, shooting a warning look at them. “He has...someone with him.”
Lily’s eyes narrow.
“He needs--” Grandma Molly chooses her words carefully, “--support right now.”
Lily nods. “May I go now?”
Grandma Molly smiles. “Of course, dear.”
Lily walks towards the living room, but as she gets close, she slows, peering around the corner. There stands her daddy, but he’s with someone. A tall man with dark hair and a severe-looking face. He’s dressed all in black.
“...take this slowly, Harry,” says the man. “It’s only been two years since Ginevra died and your children may not be ready to accept someone else in your life.” He sighs. “The rest of your family certainly isn’t.”
“Ignore Ron, he’ll come around. And I think the kids will be fine.” Daddy grabs the man’s hand and, raising it to his lips, kisses it. “They love me, and I love you, so they’ll love you.” He pauses. “Eventually.”
“Perhaps.” The man’s face softens and Lily gasps. He’s almost handsome when he does that. “But perhaps we should wait to introduce--”
Lily makes a noise and the man stops, his eyes narrow and he stares straight at her.
Daddy spins and upon seeing her, grins. The man tries to step back from Daddy, but Daddy won’t let him, clinging fast to his hand. “Lily! Come in, sweetheart. Come and meet Daddy’s friend.”
Lily enters slowly. As she approaches she can tell the man is nervous. “Hello,” she says. “I’m Lily.”
The man pauses, looks at Daddy, then bends down to her level. “Hello,” he replies, holding out his hand to hers. “My name is Severus.”
“Sev’rus.” Lily tries it out on her tongue. It tastes cool like her first snowflake. “Hello.”
Daddy coughs. “Severus is a very close friend, Lily. So you’ll be seeing a lot of him.”
Lily nods. “Sev’rus, I wished for you.”
Severus blinks. “You--”
Daddy bends down, too, placing his arm around her. “What do you mean, sweetheart?”
Lily shakes her head. The wish of the first snow has to remain a secret for the magic to work. Mummy told her that, too, before she left. “Nothing.” Following her instincts, she leans into Daddy. “He’ll make it so you’re not lonely anymore, right?” she whispers.
Daddy blinks. “I...” He glances at Severus. “Yes. I think so.”
“Good.” Kissing Daddy’s cheek, Lily tugs at his arm. “Can we have Christmas cake now? You me and Sev’rus?” She reaches for Severus’ hand.
Daddy swallows. “Yes, Lily flower,” he says, sounding strange. We can.”
When Lily walks into the kitchen hand-in-hand with both Daddy and Severus, everyone stares. Then Grandma Molly smiles. “There you are. Time for cake.”
Everyone sits, and they’re quieter than Lily is used to. But she knows how to fix that. When Grandma Molly tries to hand her the first piece of cake, Lily shakes her head. “Oh no,” she says. “Sev’rus is special. He gets the first piece.”
Grandma Molly bites her lip. “You’re sure?” she asks. “The first piece is special you know.”
“I know.” Lily smiles. “But so is Sev’rus.”
Everyone goes quiet again until Uncle Ron says in a funny voice, “And why do you say that, baby?”
Lily sighs. “Because he makes Daddy happy.”
Uncle Ron blinks. “You know, I do believe you’re right.” He looks at Daddy and smiles. “You’re a wise girl.”
Daddy kisses the top of her head. “You really, really are.”
“Out of the mouths of babes--” says Aunt Hermione, and suddenly everyone is talking and crying and Lily can see Daddy and Sev’rus are holding hands under the table.
Lily smiles to herself, munching cake as everyone talks over her head. The first snow wish always works, she thinks as she looked out the window. Thanks, Mummy.
