Weekend Getaway

~

Severus eyed the phial. It was the culmination of months of work, the distillation of all his werewolf knowledge. Tucking it into his robes, he sighed. If this doesn’t work I’ll have to start over.

Felicity appeared at the door. “I’ve locked up.” She smirked. “Don’t you have plans with Remus?”

Severus coughed. “We hadn’t actually discussed--”

Rolling her eyes, Felicity tossed a photo onto his desk. It depicted a snow-covered cottage, the sight of which made something bloom in Severus’ chest.

“What’s this?”

She snorted. “It’s from Remus. There are coordinates on the back.” She winked. “Happy Christmas.”

“Indeed.”

Severus arrived at the cottage. It looked exactly like the picture, down to the car out front and the dog playing in the snow.

Hesitantly, Severus approached the door, but before he could knock, it opened. Lupin smiled in welcome. “You got my message.”

Severus raised an eyebrow. “I got your photograph.”

“Which was the message.” Lupin gestured. “Come in.”

Inside the cottage was warm, welcoming. Severus exhaled. “What’s this place?”

“A gift from Andromeda.” Lupin clasped Severus’ hand. “She took Teddy for the weekend so we could have time together. It’s her Christmas gift to us.”

Severus smiled. “Indeed.”

~

“How do I take it?” Lupin asked, eyeing the phial.

“Three drops daily,” said Severus.

“What will it do?”

“It will probably ameliorate your werewolf symptoms.”

Lupin smiled. “Probably?”

“Only time will tell.” Standing, Severus pulled Lupin with him. “Now come, you promised me a tour of this neighbourhood.”

“So I did. Let me get my cloak--”

They walked, arm in arm, circling the neighbourhood. “They’re all quite similar,” Severus said as they passed cottage after cottage. “If I owned one, I’d want it unique and...remote.”

Lupin hummed. “I’ll remember that for the future. Shall we go back?”

“Indeed.”

~

The weekend flew by. Sunday found Severus and Lupin curled together by the fireplace. “We should get going,” said Lupin.

Severus hummed. “Indeed.”

“I’m sure this cottage is booked for next week.”

“Probably,” agreed Severus. “This seems a popular holiday destination.”

Lupin sighed. “Christmas with Teddy can be...loud.”

“Whenever he gets too loud, just remember this weekend and how...quiet it was,” murmured Severus.

“Yes.” Lupin hesitated. “Do you have Christmas plans?”

“No. Why?”

“Noise shared is noise halved.” Lupin smiled. “You’re welcome to spend it with us, although it’ll be--”

“Loud.” Severus hummed. “Very well.”

“Yes?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”
