New Year Celebration

~

“Do you and Severus have New Year’s Eve plans?” asked Hermione. “We’re going to Ginny’s I think.”

Harry, who had been quietly working on his end-of-year reports, looked up. “Actually, I’ve been wondering if we should try to get away and go somewhere special since it’s our first holiday together as a couple.” He sighed. “I just can’t think of where.”

“You’re welcome to look through my brochures,” offered Hermione.

“Aren’t they all for honeymoon places?” asked Harry. He wrinkled his nose. “Somehow I can’t see Severus wanting to go to some tropical island and sip umbrella drinks, you know?”

“Oh, I don’t know, I bet he could surprise you.” Hermione smiled at the look on Harry’s face. “But not for your first time away as a couple perhaps.” Reaching into a drawer, she pulled out the brochures. “Here, look through these and see what you think.”

“I should be surprised that you have these at work and yet I’m not,” said Harry dryly as she handed them over.

She blushed. “What? You know I have to pick where we’ll spend our honeymoon. It’s coming up soon.”

Harry grinned. “I suppose so. I mean if you left it up to Ron you’d probably end up going on a Quidditch tour of Europe or something.”

Hermione’s eyes widened and she shuddered. “Don’t even joke about that. I don’t need him getting any ideas.”

“Ideas about what?” Ron walked in, a big grin on his face. “Are you two plotting again?” He squinted. “And are those your year-end reports, Harry?” He blanched. “I need to do mine, too.”

“Yes you do.” Hermione rolled her eyes. “I’ve only reminded you six times.”

Ron sighed. “Can you believe we’re all Aurors and we still have homework?” He shook his head.

“Anyway,” said Hermione. “Harry’s trying to plan a nice, romantic New Year’s getaway.”

“Who cares where you shag?” Ron held up a hand before Harry could reply. “Sorry. Never mind, all right? Continue.”

Harry did. “What about this?” he asked, holding up a brochure depicting a city at night, with buildings and bridges covered with Christmas lights. “It’s sure to have museums and things that Severus would enjoy.”

“It’s lovely,” said Hermione. “Although it could be a bit frenetic at the holidays.”

Harry hummed, setting it aside. “Yeah, I thought of that, which is why part of me wonders if I should go for something more secluded, like this.” He pointed to another booklet, that one with the picture of snow-covered mountains on the front.

Ron leaned in for a better look. “Yeah, I suppose that could work. Not much to do there, though, mate.”

Harry smiled blandly. “Nothing except each other.”

Ron groaned. “I thought we had a deal? We don’t share about our sex lives!”

Hermione was chuckling. “You did start it, Ron.”

Harry was grinning. “Can I keep these?” he asked Hermione. “I may run them by Severus later.”

“Of course.” Hermione slanted a look at Ron. “I’m fairly sure we won’t be honeymooning in either of those places.”

Ron coughed, then, with a wink at Harry, said, “You know, Hermione, they do these Quidditch World tours--”

Shaking his head, Harry slipped the brochures into his robes and finished his reports to the sound of their bickering.

“So where did you decide to go?” Hermione asked Harry as they gathered at the Burrow for New Year’s Eve dinner.

Harry smiled. “We’re still discussing it,” he said. He glanced at Severus. “It seems we both have ideas about what constitutes a fun holiday.”

Hermione sighed. “Tell me about it. Now Ron’s on about going to the dragon reserve to visit Charlie on our honeymoon.” She huffed. “As if I want to be within shouting distance of any of his family for that.”

Harry coughed. “Well they are just about everywhere,” he said. “You’ll end up in Tahiti if you use that criteria.”

Hermione blinked. “Tahiti-- You know, I may have some brochures for that--”

Harry laughed. “Well good luck,” he said.

“And to you.” Leaning in, she kissed his cheek. “It’s just good to see you happy.”

Touched, Harry hugged her. “Thanks.”

“I thought the kissing was reserved for midnight?” said Severus, coming up to Harry and handing him a glass of champagne.

Harry grinned. “The serious kissing is,” he agreed. “And we’ll be far away by then.”

“Indeed.” Severus raised his glass to Hermione. “Sláinte.”

“Cheers.”

Dinner ended early as everyone had other plans, and as she and Ron prepared to Floo off to Ginny’s for her New Year’s Eve bash, Hermione waved at Harry. “Have a good time wherever you go!”

Harry, hand in hand with Severus, grinned. “We will!”

Sighing contentedly, Harry rested his head on Severus’ chest. “That was brilliant.”

Severus hummed, sliding long fingers through Harry’s hair. “So you approve of our location?”

Raising his head, Harry squinted over at the Christmas tree. He could just make out gold star and ball decorations on it. Behind it was the window, through which he could see the night sky with stars twinkling brightly. “Perfect,” he breathed.

“We could be at Ginevra’s celebration,” said Severus. “Or Longbottom’s event. Or even Minerva’s party--”

“I’m just where I want to be,” declared Harry, arms tightening around Severus.

“How long do you think it will be before our friends realise we did not, in fact, go anywhere, but remained home?” asked Severus, sounding amused.

Harry hummed. “Twenty-four to forty-eight hours?” Shifting on top of Severus, he grinned down at him. “Which means we should make the most of it.”

“Indeed,” agreed Severus, pulling Harry down to kiss him. And just for a moment, the light in his eyes eclipsed that of even the brightest star.
