The Big Announcement

They’d been at the pub for several minutes when the question Neville had been dreading arrived. “When do we get to meet your mystery man?” asked Ginny.
Neville coughed. “He’s working--”
Ginny raised an eyebrow. “I’m beginning to think you’re ashamed of us.”
Neville sighed. “No! Never.”
“Are you ashamed of him? You shouldn’t be with someone you’re ashamed of,” said Harry, tone soft.
“I’m not!”
“Then what?”
“Perhaps Mister Longbottom wishes to keep his private life private,” said Snape, his arm thrown possessively over Harry’s shoulders. “That’s...understandable.”
Neville bit his lip. “It’s just...his family may not approve.”
~
Ginny huffed. “Don’t be ridiculous. Whose family wouldn’t adore you?”
Neville blushed. “Well, there’s the little detail that I’m gay--”
Harry coughed. “No offence, mate, but I think I have you beat on that account. I’m gay and dating Severus Snape. Remember the headlines when that got out?”
Neville laughed. “Oh yes.” He sobered. “Still, it’s just...his mother’s pretty intimidating, I really want her to like me.”
“Whose mother?” asked a familiar voice.
Gaping, Neville turned to see Bill approaching. “You came.”
“Yep, work let out early.” Sliding in beside Neville, Bill kissed him. “So. What did I miss?”
~
“Neville Longbottom, I’m furious with you!” Ginny snapped after Bill left to get drinks.
Harry and Snape exchanged a look. “We’ll give you some privacy,” murmured Snape as they left.
Neville shrunk in his seat. He’d figured when the truth got out he’d at least have her on his side, but apparently he’d been wrong. “You don’t approve.”
Ginny huffed, arms crossed. “I approve just fine, and so will Mum. I just can’t believe you’d doubt us.”
Neville relaxed, smiling. “I didn’t--”
“You did.” Slowly, Ginny smiled. “But you can make it up to me.”
Neville’s eyes widened. “Oh?”
“Definitely.”
~
“An engagement party? How wonderful!” Molly hugged Neville, then Bill. “I’m so thrilled for you boys.”
“Told you,” murmured Ginny as Molly continued to rhapsodise.
“You were right,” admitted Neville. “She seems pretty pleased.”
Ginny hummed. “Not only that, but now she gets to plan an engagement party and maybe a wedding. Which means she won’t try to interfere in my life.”
“Or ours,” murmured Harry, who’d offered his support for Neville and Bill’s ‘big announcement’.
“Indeed,” agreed Snape, smirking.
Neville sighed. “Why do I feel like I’ve been had?” he whispered to Bill.
Bill grinned. “Welcome to the family.”
