Someday
~
Harry fondles his wand, staring up at the night sky. It’s been a long winter and he’s heartily sick of camping. He loves Hermione, but all day every day in a tent with her is...trying.
Someday he hopes they will be done with this. It saps him, the running, the constant searching, and part of him wonders if it would’ve been better if he would just let Voldemort catch him.
*Trust me*
The words seem to come from everywhere and Harry sits up, suddenly alert. A glowing figure steps from the trees, its liquid eyes beckoning. Sighing, Harry follows.
~
Staring in disbelief at the sword of Gryffindor at the bottom of the frozen lake, Harry groans, knowing the chances he’ll be able to Summon it magically are nil.
He tries anyway and when it doesn’t budge he sighs and strips.
The water’s beyond cold, as he’d known it would be and, ignoring the pain, he kicks to the bottom. He’d debated removing the locket, but decided it was better kept close, and the moment he touches the locket it springs, tightening around his neck, choking him. Someday, he thinks as he’s dying, things will stop trying to kill me.
~
When Harry wakes someone’s berating him. “...foolish boy! Someday you’ll think things through--”
Harry opens his eyes. “Snape?” he croaks.
“Indeed.” Snape’s standing there, sword in hand.
Harry sits up. “You put the sword in the pool?”
Snape snorts. “As sharp as ever, Potter. Yes. You were meant to obtain it performing a feat of bravery.”
Harry starts shivering and Snape, rolling his eyes, casts a non-verbal Warming Charm. “Thanks,” mutters Harry. “Right, so can’t you just hand me the sword?”
“Obviously not.” Snape huffs. “You must earn it.”
Harry hums. “So there’s just one solution. You kill the Horcrux.”
~
Harry sets down the locket. “It’ll fight back, but don’t listen. Just...hit it.”
Snape raised an eyebrow. “Indeed. Hit it. How...illuminating.”
Harry rolls his eyes. “I’m trying to help. How many Horcruxes have you killed?”
Snape glares at him. “None.”
“Then take the advice!” Harry steps away. “Someday you’ll just believe me about something.”
“The world may not survive that,” deadpans Snape.
Harry’s eyes widen. “Was that a...joke?”
“Certainly not.” Snape’s mouth twitches. “I haven’t a sense of humour. Everyone knows that.”
Harry coughs. What a strange night. “Right, here goes,” he says, and opens the locket.
~
Harry stares up at the dark cloud hovering over them. In it flickers sensuous images of Ginny and Harry. “Poor, pathetic old man,” Ginny says. “Harry doesn’t want you. He has me!”
Snape is transfixed, sword dangling from his hand.
“It’s lying!” shouts Harry. “Kill it!”
“You hope that someday you’ll have a chance,” hisses Riddle Ginny, face contorted. “But it will never happen!”
“Don’t listen!” Harry sees the moment Snape’s had enough. The expression on his face is murderous and Harry shields his eyes as Snape swings the sword at the locket. The boom seems to rock the world.
~
“That was...interesting.” Snape is panting, lying on his back, and Harry, still reeling from exposure to the rage that burst from the locket, nods weakly.
When he’s caught his breath, Harry stands, making his way towards Snape. “What it said before--” he begins.
Snape shakes his head. “It isn’t important.”
“Yes it is.” Harry is determined that Snape hear him out. “Ginny and I aren’t romantically involved. We’re just friends.”
“It doesn’t matter.” Snape starts to stand and, frustrated, Harry grabs his arm.
“Someday you’ll listen to me,” he grits out and, dragging Snape close, he kisses him soundly.
~
“Your recklessness will get you into trouble someday,” murmurs Snape.
Harry, his head resting on Snape’s chest, smiles. “I’m accustomed to trouble.”
“Indeed.” Snape sighs and gently begins extricating himself from Harry’s embrace. “I’ve been gone too long.” Shooting a piercing look at Harry, he says, “I really should Obliviate you. If the Dark Lord sees what we just did--”
“He won’t.” Harry smiles. “I see his thoughts and he’s too self-obsessed to even care about mine. Plus, Hermione’s helped me figure out how to block him.”
Snape nods. “Be careful.”
Harry pulls him close once more. “You, too.”
~
Ron finds Harry on his way back to Hermione, and when they arrive, the welcome is cold. “Come back then, have you?” she snaps at Ron. Harry hovers anxiously to the side.
As Ron babbles about the Deluminator, Harry fingers the button he’d ripped off Snape’s coat during their interlude in the forest. He smiles. I’m going to win this war because I’ve someone to live for now.
“Something funny?” growls Hermione, glaring at him.
Harry coughs, shaking his head.
Hermione huffs, stomping into the tent. Ron sighs. “Reckon she’ll ever forgive me?”
Harry pats him on the back. “Someday.”
~
Snape’s dying and Harry’s frantic. “Hermione! Dittany!”
Hermione springs into action, and as they work, Snape whispers, “Look at me.”
“Please,” Harry begs. “Don’t die!”
Memories stream from Snape’s eyes. “Take them,” he says, eyes dimming.
Harry knows what to do. After all, he saw Snape save Draco from Sectumsempra. The words are burned into his memory; he’d known he’d need them someday.
Harry chants, pouring dittany into Snape’s mouth, watching his neck knit closed. Hermione starts feeding Snape anti-venom.
They save Snape, but as he prepares to view Snape’s memories, Harry steels himself. The worse is yet to come.
~
“You died?”
Harry smiles. “Yes, but it didn’t stick.”
Snape rolls his eyes. “Obviously.” He exhales. “I’m glad.”
Feeling brave, Harry links his fingers with Snape’s. When Snape doesn’t pull away, Harry grins. “Me, too.”
Snape’s fingers tighten on his. “What are you plans?”
Harry hums. “Avoid Dark wizards. Rebuild my parents’ cottage. How about you?”
“Avoid Azkaban.”
Harry nods. “I can help with that.”
“Indeed?”
“Yeah, they actually listen to me now.”
“It was bound to happen someday.” Snape smiles faintly. “And if that works, then what?”
“Then we’ll be...friends?”
Snape’s eyes glitter. “Or more.”
Harry relaxes. “Brilliant.”
