“A Sneakoscope?” Severus frowned. “Why should I require this now?”
“Because not everyone agrees with your Wizengamot pardon,” said Poppy. “This could give you needed warning.”
“Indeed.” It was a sound argument. Nodding, Severus pocketed the thing. “Am I fit for discharge, then?”
“Yes.” Poppy smiled. “Try not to get bitten by any more snakes.”
Severus inclined his head. “I shall do my best.”
“Where are you staying?” she asked.
“Lucius has offered me a place at the Manor.”
Poppy raised an eyebrow. “Be careful.”
Severus smirked. “I’ve already agreed to be careful of snakes.”
She laughed. “So you did.”

To Severus’ chagrin, the Sneakoscope kept going off at odd times. He cast layers of Silencing Spells on it, which kept it silent, but didn’t prevent it from vibrating incessantly.
Since Severus had never really trusted Lucius, he supposed the thing was accurate, but why was it going off whenever Draco or Narcissa approached? Paranoid, Severus kept to his rooms and planned his next career move.
The day Potter visited, Severus expected the Sneakoscope to go mad. To the contrary, however, when they shook hands it went absolutely still. Severus exhaled. Evidently there was one trustworthy person in his life.

Potter’s visits were pleasant. Narcissa soon made it clear she didn’t approve. “It’s not proper, Severus,” she said pointedly one evening.
Since she’d been trying to get him to escort Draco to various functions, however, Severus suspected her of ulterior motives and ignored her admonitions, continuing to see Potter.
The Sneakoscope remained quiescent when Potter was present, although when Draco began loitering in the hallway outside Severus’ rooms during Potter’s visits, it would give small warning shakes.
Potter, evidently sensing Severus’ discomfiture, finally made a suggestion. “Would you like to come to my place?”
“Indeed,” agreed Severus. “Lead the way.”

Grimmauld Place had been renovated since Severus’ last visit. It still had a faintly sinister air about it, however.
“I’ll make tea,” said Potter. “Wait here?”
Nodding, Severus entered the sitting room. While waiting, he scanned the room, and for the most part the Sneakoscope remained quiet, although as he approached the fireplace, it began vibrating. Severus peered inside.
“Everything all right?”
Severus turned towards Potter. “Indeed.”
Potter clasped Severus’ arm. The Sneakoscope stilled. Severus hummed. “I really can trust you, can’t I?” he murmured.
Potter smiled. “I hope so.”
The Sneakoscope didn’t budge as they kissed. Evidently, it agreed.
~
“What are you doing?” asked Potter.
Severus, Sneakosope in hand, was kneeling naked by the fireplace. Looking over his shoulder at Potter, he smiled. Potter, sprawled in bed, was quite alluring. “My Sneakoscope thinks there’s something untrustworthy about your fireplace system.”
“Oh?” Potter sat up. “Found anything?”
“Not yet.” Severus ran the Sneakoscope up and around the fireplace’s opening. It vibrated emphatically. “But there’s something--”
A tap came at the window. Potter frowned. “Who’s owling this late?” Padding over to the window, he opened it, inspecting the letter. “It’s Malfoy. He wants to know when you’re returning home.”
Severus snorted.
~
“Is something going on between you and Malfoy?” asked Potter.
“No,” Severus said.
Potter leaned against the window. “Do you want to return to Malfoy Manor?”
Severus hummed. “No.”
Potter smiled. “You’re welcome to stay here.”
“A generous offer.” When Severus reached Potter, he slid an arm around his waist. “How shall I repay you?”
“We’ll think of something,” murmured Potter just before their mouths met.
As they kissed, the Sneakoscope vibrated in Severus’ hand. He drew back. “My Sneakoscope believes you’re planning something nefarious, Mr Potter.”
Potter smiled wickedly. “Maybe so, although I can guarantee it’ll be fun.”
“Indeed.”
~
Pleased, Severus inspected his new lab. Once he’d moved in, Harry had allowed him free rein to build himself a proper potions lab to support his booming mail-away potions business.
Arms embraced him. Severus smiled. “What do you think?”
Harry set his chin on Severus’ shoulder. “I think I’ll have to pry you out of here at night.”
“Oh, I don’t know, I have incentive to find you in the evenings.”
“I should hope so.” Harry kissed his neck. “And speaking of incentives--”
Severus’ Sneakoscope vibrated gently. Chuckling, Severus spun, pulling Harry closer. “You’re plotting something.”
“Aren’t I always?”
“Indeed.”
