Persuasion

~

Thoughtful, Kingsley watched Draco from across the room. He’d blossomed recently, becoming a gifted Unspeakable, and it’d been noticed. Kingsley had already been asked his opinion about promoting Draco. He’d given his blessing, naturally. Things were going well.

Except on the personal front.

While their sex life remained spectacular, Draco kept dodging the larger question of their future. Even though Kingsley had spoken with Lucius and Narcissa, making his intentions clear, Draco seemed to be missing the message.

Draco glanced towards him, eyebrow raised in inquiry. Kingsley motioned to his watch and Draco nodded.

Tonight. Tonight we have it out.

“...something’s happening at work,” Draco said when they got home. “People keep hinting about opportunities.”

Kingsley hummed. “Perhaps someone’s sending you a message.”

Draco narrowed his eyes. “You know something.”

Kingsley smiled. “I know many things.” Embracing Draco, he murmured, “For instance, I know you’re afraid to commit to me. What I don’t know is why.”

Draco froze. “Kingsley--”

“Your parents approve, and no Ministry regulations prevent us bonding--” Kingsley waited.

“The Shacklebolt name’s respected.”

“I like to think so.”

“Malfoy, not so much.”

“You’re welcome to adopt mine.”

Draco coughed. “Or you, mine.”

Kingsley smiled, relieved. “Time to negotiate.”

Kingsley’s lovemaking was thorough that night, proving to Draco with every touch how he felt about him. When he finally let Draco come, Draco was sobbing, clinging to Kingsley. “All right,” he finally whispered into Kingsley’s neck as he caught his breath. “Message received.”

“Is it?” asked Kingsley, caressing his back. “So you’ll marry me, become Draco Malfoy-Shacklebolt?”

Draco laughed softly. “What will you do if I say no?”

Kingsley hummed. “Start all over, I suppose.”

Draco shivered. “Much as I’m tempted to make you do that again, I’m not sure my heart can take it.”

“So your answer?”

“Yes.”
