Visiting Norberta

If there was anyone Hagrid would trust Norbert to, it was Charlie. He remembered him as a student. Charlie had always been extra gentle with wild things, just like Hagrid, and nothing seemed to frighten him. It hadn’t surprised Hagrid one bit when he’d learned that Charlie had gone on to work with dragons.
“She’s a girl, you know,” Charlie said when he came to pick Norbert up.
Hagrid had blinked. “Is she now?”
Charlie nodded. “And a lovely specimen, too. She’ll do well in the wild. Thanks for sharing her.”
Hagrid, holding back tears, turned away. “I’ll miss her.”
“You can visit.”
“You have to have permission from someone...official, don’t you?”
Charlie placed his hand on Hagrid’s arm. “I’m someone official,” he said gently. “And you have an open invitation.”
Which was how Hagrid found himself standing uncertainly on a mountainside in Romania. He’d owled ahead, making sure it was all right to visit, and Charlie’s reply had been brief, but welcoming.
Just as Hagrid started to get nervous, he spotted Charlie striding towards him. “You made it!” he said, hand outstretched, wide smile on his face. “Brilliant.”
Hagrid smiled. “I did. I couldn’t let Norberta think I’d forgotten her.”
Charlie’s grip was firm, and when he pulled Hagrid into a hug, Hagrid was shocked. No one hugged him. In fact, no one ever touched him, really. But Charlie leaned into him, a full body press that had them touching from chest to thighs. And he held on until Hagrid relaxed into the contact. Finally, he pulled away, smiling up into Hagrid’s face. “Well, then,” he said, still clasping Hagrid’s hand. “Let’s go see her.”
Norberta looked healthy. Hagrid squinted up at her. “That’s her?” he said doubtfully.
As if she’d heard him, Norberta executed an abrupt turn in the sky and made a beeline for him. Charlie, to his side, moved away, and in the next moment, Norberta had landed and was bounding towards Hagrid. When she got to him she placed her front paws on his shoulders, toppling him over and... Hagrid laughed. She was hugging him!
“Oh, Norberta!” he said, hugging her back and crying all at the same time.
When he was calmer, and Norbert had pulled back and was bounding around him like a puppy, Charlie moved closer. “You’d make a good keeper.”
“Me?” Hagrid shuffled, looking down at the ground. “Oh no. You have to have magic for that, and I--”
He froze when Charlie stepped into his line of sight, looking up at him. “You’ve your own magic with wild creatures. A lot of people would do well to follow your example.”
Hagrid stared into his eyes. If he didn’t know better he’d think Charlie was...flirting? But it wasn’t possible. No one flirted with Hagrid. No one wanted him.
“Come on,” said Charlie. “Let me introduce you to the other keepers and give you the tour.”
Norberta took off after them, occasionally nuzzling Hagrid as if reminding him she was there. He scratched her head affectionately.
The other keepers seemed impressed with the way Norberta had responded to Hagrid, and he found himself the centre of attention that day. In the evening, Charlie showed him to the guest tent where he was to stay. “It’s not much, but it’s what we all have,” he said.
It was like a palace to Hagrid, however, and he said as much. Charlie smiled. “You really would make a fine keeper.”
The next day dawned bright and hot. Charlie took Hagrid on a tour of the rest of the preserve. Norberta, who had curled up outside Hagrid’s tent all night, followed them again, although at random times during the day she’d take off.
“Probably catching her breakfast,” said Charlie.
As the day got hotter, Hagrid started to pant. Finally, Charlie led him into a grove a trees where, while it wasn’t cool, precisely, it was slightly better than being in the direct sun. “They call these fairy circles,” he said as they sat in the centre of the trees. “I’ve never seen any fairies around here, but I keep looking.”
Charlie had brought food in a hamper, and as they ate, he pointed out various dragon species as they flew by overhead. It was one of the best days Hagrid had ever had.
When they finished eating, Charlie, sucking on the ice from his drink, lay back on the grass. “Why do you stay at Hogwarts?”
Hagrid, next to him, blinked. “I’ve always been there. It’s...home.”
Charlie nodded, leaning up on his elbow to look over at Hagrid. “That I can understand,” he said. “But I want you to know, there’s a place here for you should you ever feel the urge to get away, do something different.”
Looking back, Hagrid could never say how it had happened. One minute, Charlie had been staring at him and then next he was straddling him, kissing him.
Hagrid resisted at first. “I’ll hurt you!” he protested as Charlie peeled back his clothes.
Charlie simply laughed. “I work with dragons, my friend. You won’t hurt me.”
He tasted delicious. Mouth cold from the ice he’d been chewing, his cool fingers slipping over Hagrid’s nipples-- Hagrid couldn’t help but return his caresses, being careful.
But Charlie was having none of it. “Relax,” he whispered into Hagrid’s neck as he urged him on. “We’re wizards, remember? We can make this work.”
And they did. It was so hot that Charlie kept dipping his fingers into his cup to pull out ice, which he trailed over Hagrid, who reciprocated, much to his delight. And in the end the heat didn’t matter, Hagrid’s size didn’t matter, all that seemed to be important was that they could give each other pleasure, and that, for the first time, Hagrid felt wanted, desired, attractive.
Afterwards, they returned to the compound, limping and sore and beaming. Hagrid, whose Portkey was set to take him back that evening, cleaned up before saying goodbye to everyone and giving Norberta one last hug.
As he and Charlie watched her take off into the sky, Charlie murmured, “Dumbledore says Hogwarts is hosting the Triwizard Tournament next year. I’ll be bringing dragons for one of the tasks. Perhaps we can...spend some time together then?” Turning towards Hagrid, he extended his hand.
That time Hagrid initiated the hug, and, leaning into Charlie, whispered, “Just you try to stop me.”
