Snape and the Triwizard Cup

~

“We’re reviving the Triwizard Tournament.”

Severus almost choked on his tea. “After last time?” He raised an eyebrow at Minerva, who smiled.

“Those were special circumstances.” She raised an eyebrow back. “Unless you’re aware of some other Dark wizard?”

Severus glared.

Minerva hummed. “Anyway, I require your assistance.”

Severus sighed. “Of course, Headmistress.”

“Past champions are to judge, and I’d like you to contact them.”

Her eyes twinkled and Severus wondered if that ability came with the position. He couldn’t remember twinkling--

“In case you’ve forgotten, they are--”

“I recall their identities,” Severus huffed.

“Good.” Minerva nodded. “Keep me informed.”

~

Fleur Weasley was enthusiastic. “But of course I should be ’appy to ’elp. I loved the Triwizard Tournament.” She gestured towards her husband. “Eet ees ’ow I met my William. Zat cup changed my life.”

Severus refrained from snorting. “Indeed.”

“Although per’aps zis time you should have a Curse-Breaker around to assist?” she continued. “After last time--”

Severus frowned. “I assure you, Madam, all reasonable precautions will be taken--”

Fleur held up a hand. “I shall not participate if my William does not oversee the arrangements.”

Naturally, Minerva agreed, and, Fleur’s participation assured, Severus moved on to his next judge.

~

Fortunately, he had an in with Krum. “It’s great to see you, Professor.” Millicent Bulstrode-Krum had improved with age.

“And you, Millicent.” Severus inclined his head. “The Headmistress and the board of governors of Hogwarts plan to revive the Triwizard Tournament.”

Millicent exchanged a besotted look with Krum. “How lovely. I’ve fond memories of those days. That Cup is responsible for Viktor and I meeting.”

Severus wondered if Crouch’s tampering with the Cup had inadvertently activated a Matchmaking Charm of some kind. “Indeed. I take it you agree to participate, Mr Krum?”

Krum nodded. “Is Potter?”

Severus sighed. “We’ll see.”

~

Severus assumed Potter would be difficult to locate. Ever since retiring early from the Aurors, he’d been a virtual hermit. When Severus’ owl was returned within the hour, however, Severus relaxed. Until he Apparated to the coordinates on the note.

Looking around, he frowned. “Potter?”

There was a shimmer and Potter appeared. “Snape.” He inclined his head. “This way, please.”

Potter’s cottage had all manner of charms on it. Severus was impressed. Potter made tea and they sat on a veranda as they drank. “So, why are you here?” Potter asked.

“Minerva’s reviving the Triwizard Tournament.”

Potter’s cup abruptly shattered.

~

“Is that the best idea?” asked Potter after cleaning up the mess.

Severus hummed. “You’re welcome to discuss that with the Headmistress. My job is to invite you to serve as a Triwizard Tournament judge.”

Potter pursed his lips. “That contest changed my life.”

Severus sighed, reconciling himself to hearing all about how Potter’d met the love of his life or some-such. “Indeed.”

Potter smiled. “It’s the first time I’ve ever won anything.”

“I see.” Severus’ eyes narrowed. “Are you agreeing to judge?”

Potter shrugged. “Why not?” Slowly, he smiled. “Plus, it’ll be fun to see the other champions again.”

~

The Triwizard champions were a boy from Beauxbatons, a beefy girl from Durmstrang Academy, and Sally Shacklebolt, a tiny Slytherin with Ravenclaw sensibilities. They were chosen by the Cup, but only after Severus, Bill Weasley, and all the champions had checked repeatedly for hexes and curses. Severus was quite sure that a speck of Dark dust couldn’t land on it without them detecting it.

The first contest was won by the Durmstrang girl, who was the first to successfully retrieve Acromantula venom.

“She probably just punched the spider,” murmured Potter.

Despite himself, Severus grinned. The Tournament looked to be entertaining.

~

“A Yule Ball?” Severus groaned.

“It’s traditional, Severus.” Minerva smiled. “I’m sure you can easily find a date, what with all the...visitors staying at Hogwarts.”

Severus sighed. For weeks she’d been remarking on how well he and Potter were getting along during the Triwizard Tournament. “Shouldn’t I chaperone?” he asked.

“Unnecessary.” Minerva patted his arm. “That’s covered.”

Severus didn’t have to broach the topic with Potter, however. Potter brought it up himself. “Will you attend the Yule Ball with me?” he asked over dinner one evening.

Severus raised an eyebrow. “People will notice.”

Potter grinned. “Good. This’ll be fun.”

~

The Yule Ball was enjoyable for Severus, who for once had no responsibilities.

All the champions were under intense scrutiny, however, which meant he was, too, but he and Potter managed to stay in the background, and happily, the Beauxbatons champion proved especially adept at attracting attention.

“Veela blood?” Potter murmured as they watched him work the crowd.

“Or Malfoy charm,” replied Severus.

Potter blinked. “He’s a Malfoy?”

“A distant one.”

“Hm.” And as they danced, and later kissed, all unnoticed by Skeeter, Potter hummed. “This may be the first time I’ve been glad to have a Malfoy around.”

“Indeed.”

~

The Triwizard Tournament was over, won by the Beauxbatons champion, who’d somehow managed to get all the observers to root for him. The students were chanting in the stands as he held the Triwizard Cup over his head. Even Severus was on his feet.

“Malfoy blood you said?” murmured Potter.

Severus smirked. “Or Veela.”

Potter chuckled. “He’s going to be one to watch in future.”

“Indeed.” Severus’ smile faded as he pondered his future. Potter would be leaving; no more late night chats, walks by the lake, drinks in Hogsmeade, kisses in the moonlight-- Suddenly, the future seemed bleak indeed.

~

“I’ve been thinking,” said Potter as the crowd dispersed. “I’ve enjoyed helping with the Triwizard Tournament.”

Severus, pondering how to get Potter to stay, was distracted. “Oh?”

“Yes.” Potter clasped Severus’ hand. “I applied to teach Defence here at Hogwarts. I do have Auror training, so--”

Suddenly, Severus was paying close attention. “You’d be an adequate Defence professor.”

Potter smiled. “And what sort of partner would I be?” he whispered.

Oblivious to the crowd, Severus pulled him close. “A champion one.” And as they kissed he reflected that perhaps the Matchmaking Charm on the Triwizard Cup was useful after all.
