Date: 2017-07-16 06:15 pm (UTC)I've also read an excellent transman Snape headcanon.
Honestly, I'm less invested in Snape's gender than I am in BDSM Dom Snape, LOL.no subject
Date: 2017-07-16 09:05 pm (UTC)LOL. I can see him as a dom, as a sub, as not into BDSM...really, my headcanon for his sexuality is flexible. :)

Date: 2017-07-16 09:08 pm (UTC)I've written Snape with female genitalia, but never trans. That would have to be done carefully, IMO.

I read through a couple of comments on the Snape video and I think my opinion most aligns with this comment:
"I get that transgender people want more representation and someone to look up to, but to label him Trans because of his handwriting, clothing, and feminine attributes is part of what makes masculinity so toxic. If a man shows any feminine traits, they are labelled either gay or trans, same with women. If you feel like a woman that's fine, but things like this just confuse people further as to what being transgender is"
I'm all for people headcanoning Snape as trans (or whatever they find empowering), but I think trying to base your reasoning for that in the super flimsy few lines in the text that the video cites is a slippery slope into just conforming to really toxic ideas about the arbitrary divide between masculinity and femininity, especially when the signifiers the video claims people are using realllllly aren't signifiers that are actually tied to gender identity. (feminine handwriting? really? what does that even mean, except implying like, dotting all your i's with hearts? And on the other side, how are you going to define masculine handwriting? Replacing every b and d you draw with a penis in profile?)
So basically my position is.. yes! more trans Snape! That's awesome! But you should just own your trans Snape headcanon without trying to find a half assed justification for it in text that ends up reinforcing harmful gender stereotypes (e.g. Snape is trans cos he likes flowers).
(as an analogy, I see it the same as if someone wanted to envision Crabbe or Goyle as a black man; that's awesome if you're doing that because you just want to see more diversity in your own HP headcanon, and I don't think you have to have the text explicitly confirm your interpretation for that interpretation to be valid and meaningful to you. But on the flipside, if your justification for Crabbe/Goyle being a black man was "well they're just thugs" that is... way less awesome, and indicates a deeper problem where you views of characters are subconsciously (or consciously) informed by harmful stereotypes and portrayals of minority demographics)

Date: 2017-07-17 06:20 pm (UTC)Hahah! The same thought occurred to me about the cats. "How did they get them not to chew those kimonos off?"
*nods*
I agree with your assessment on Snape. Could Snape be a trans woman? Sure. Could he be a gay man? Absolutely. Could he be a heterosexual? I suppose, although where's the fun in that? :P
And your Crabbe/Goyle analogy was well done.
