With Eyes Wide Open

“This is ridiculous.” Draco rolled his eyes as Pansy dragged him into the pub.

Ignoring his protests, Pansy steered him towards a booth. “Not if it gets you a date and, ultimately, laid.”

“I had no idea you were so interested in my sex life,” Draco drawled once seated. “Are you not getting enough action with Granger?”

“Hermione and I have sex quite often, thank you,” Pansy informed him, signalling the bartender. “And trying to change the subject won’t work. We’re discussing you.”

Draco huffed. “I’m not that desperate that I need to be set up on a blind date.” He looked around. “And where is he, anyway?”

“He’ll be here.” She raised an eyebrow. “You seem eager to meet him despite your protests. When was the last time you had a proper shag, anyway?”

“That’s not the point.” Fighting his blushes, Draco welcomed the pub elf’s interruption to take their order.

“It is exactly the point,” Pansy snapped once they were alone again. She leaned forward. “Draco, you’re not happy. And you deserve to be. The war’s over, let yourself live.”

Draco smirked. “Oh, I’m living, trust me.” But when his whisky appeared, he hid behind it gratefully. Pansy could be a bit too perceptive at times.

“No, you’re not.” Pansy patted his arm. “No one’s going to judge you if you allow yourself to be happy, Draco. Your friends won’t, your colleagues at St Mungo’s won’t, and not even your parents--”

“Well they can’t now, can they?” Draco looked away. “Father’s mind is gone, Mother refuses to leave France, which means--”

“Which means the future of the Malfoy name is up to you.” Pansy smiled. “It’s a brave new world, Draco. You can make a new place in it.”

Draco shook his head. “I think your Gryffindor has contaminated you.”

Pansy laughed. “Don’t be jealous. We’ll find you your own Gryffindor.”

“Please. Who says I want a Gryffindor?” Draco sipped his drink.

Pansy winked. “Well, that depends on which Gryffindor, doesn’t it? And everyone knows which lion gets your knickers all wet.”

Draco’s eyes widened. She hadn’t. She wouldn’t. “Salazar,” he breathed. “Tell me you didn’t set me up with--”

“Potter. Hermione.” Pansy stood up, hugging Granger. With one arm around her girlfriend, she gestured to her vacated chair. “Have a seat, Potter. I was beginning to wonder if you’d decided to stand us up.”

Potter smiled, sitting. “Hermione would probably have Stupified me and carried me here if I hadn’t agreed to come under my own power.”

Granger laughed. “I probably would have at that,” she agreed. Glancing between Draco and Potter, she pursed her lips. “Right, time to leave you two alone, I think. Have fun.”

Pansy fixed Draco with a pointed look. “Play nice, boys.”

Once alone, Draco sighed. “Look, I realise this is awkward, but if we just sit here for a minute, they’ll see this won’t work and they’ll leave us alone-”

“Who says it won’t work?” Potter asked quietly.

Draco’s mouth fell open. “What?”

Potter sighed, leaning forward. “Look, we hardly had a chance to talk when we were in school, we could be compatible.” He shrugged.

Draco blinked. “You’re willing to set aside years of us being enemies? Why?”

Potter smiled. “We weren’t really enemies. And as for why--” He glanced over towards Pansy and Granger, who were chatting at the bar. “I trust Hermione. She knows me better than anyone, so if she says we could work, I believe her.”

Draco sat back in his chair. Pansy knew him better than anyone, too. “You know, you could be right,” he finally said. He extended his hand and held his breath. “Hello, Potter. Draco Malfoy.”

Smiling, Potter accepted his hand. “Hello, Draco. Call me Harry.”
