“I’m going to be just like you, Mama!” Severus declared.
Eileen’s eyes widened in alarm. “No!” Picking him up, she hugged him close. “Don’t use my life as your inspiration. You need to be strong. Never let anyone tell you what to do. Be your own man.”
But Severus clearly didn’t understand. Staring up at her with his big, dark eyes, he blinked. “Mama?”
Closing her eyes, Eileen kissed the top of his head. “It’s fine, Sevvy. Just...be sure that whatever you do in life, it’s because you’re inspired to do it for yourself and for no one else.”
~
Severus emerged from the Pensieve, wet faced. Seated across from him, Harry Potter looked worried. “Snape?”
Wiping his face with the cloth Potter provided, Severus lied. “I’m fine.”
“Rough memory?” Potter asked gently.
“An...early one.” Severus looked away. “I realise this process is tedious--”
“It’s not,” Potter interrupted. “You gave me your memories so I could save the world. There’s no way you could know you’d lose them because you were so close to death when you transferred them.”
Severus sighed. “I’m just fortunate you preserved them. Why did you?”
Potter smiled. “Let’s just say that they...inspired me.”
~
That weekend Potter showed Severus the memory that had most ‘inspired’ him. “Please don’t be upset,” he said, looking nervous as he handed over the vial.
Eyebrow raised, Severus tipped the silvery liquid into the Pensieve.
Plunging into a dark room, Severus’ mouth dropped open upon seeing himself sprawled naked on his bed, masturbating. “Harry,” Pensieve Severus moaned.
Severus gasped, memories flooding him. Having quietly fallen in love with Potter upon awakening in the hospital, he’d also apparently wanted Harry for years, ever since seeing his bravery during the war.
“Salazar,” he whispered as he was propelled from the memory.
~
When Severus emerged Potter was waiting, his expression unreadable, although Severus could tell he was nervous.
“This is the memory that inspired you?” Severus asked.
Potter blushed. “Yes. It made me...examine our relationship.”
Severus raised an eyebrow. “What relationship?”
Potter smiled. “There are many people I dislike, but I don’t feel the urge to be around them like I do you. It made me...examine how I really feel about you.”
“And your conclusions?”
“I admire you.” Potter licked his lips. “And I fancy you.”
Severus’ heart sped up. “Oh?”
Potter held up a vial. “Let me show you.”
~
Scenes sped past Severus rapidly. ...Potter on the run, listening for news about Severus on the Wireless...Potter realising that Severus had stolen the sword of Gryffindor from Bellatrix’s vault...Potter vehemently defending Severus to friends and officials with impassioned, inspired speeches...Potter masturbating, Severus’ name spilling from his lips...
Catapulting out of Potter’s memories, Severus was breathing heavily when he collapsed into a chair. “You defended me.”
“Yes.”
“You...fancy me?”
“Definitely.”
Slowly, Severus smiled. “I’ll need proof of that, Mr Potter.”
Grinning, Potter stood. Moving towards Severus, he slipped into his lap. “And I’m happy to provide it.”
~
With the last of his memories reintegrated, Severus returned to Hogwarts to talk to Minerva. “It’s good to see you, old friend,” she said, greeting him with a smile.
Over tea, they discussed how he could continue teaching. Severus didn’t want to be headmaster, and once he convinced Minerva of that, the conversation lightened up considerably.
“...so Potions for you.” Minerva sighed. “Now I need someone for Defence.”
Severus coughed. “Have you considered Potter?”
Minerva blinked. “He’d be perfect of course, but I didn’t think you’d approve--”
Severus smiled. “Oh, recent events have quite inspired me as to his capabilities.”
~
“...see you followed your heart, Sevvy.”
Severus smiled at his mother. “Just like you, Mama. You’re my inspiration.”
Eileen sighed, her hand soft as she caressed his cheek. “I’ve worried about you, but you chose more wisely than did I. Cherish your love, and blessed be.”
“Blessed be, Mama,” Severus whispered, eyes wet. “And I will--”
“Will what?” Harry murmured, kissing Severus’ neck before curling closer.
Severus, blinking tears from his eyes, gathered Harry to him. “It’s nothing you need worry about,” he said. “It was just a dream.”
“Love you,” Harry sighed, snoring softly within moments.
Severus smiled. “Indeed.”
