A Happy Christmas

~

“That’s the last of the students gone,” said Minerva, turning away from the door.

“Happy Christmas to me,” murmured Severus.

She laughed. “So it seems. And since you and Harry will both be staying here over the break, this could be a very Happy Christmas indeed.”

Raising an eyebrow, Severus glared at Minerva. “I have no idea what you mean,” he lied.

She shook her head. “Of course you don’t.”

Deliberately ignoring her, Severus spun on his heel. “Now that that’s over I have to return my attention to the accounts. So if that’s all--”

Sighing, she moved towards the moving staircase. “It doesn’t have to be all. If you weren’t so stubborn--”

Withdrawing some parchment from his robes, Severus began flipping through them. “I’m afraid I’m rather busy right now, Minerva. Good day.”

Minerva stared at him for a long moment, and he could feel the weight of her gaze. “I’ll be by later to wish you a proper goodbye,” she finally said.

“As you wish,” he said, not looking up. Once she’d left, however, he folded the parchments, sliding them back into his robes, and sighed, staring once more at the frozen landscape. Icicles had formed over all the foliage and, while quite striking, it was also treacherous. He wouldn’t be doing much outside while the students were gone. Which means I’ll be stuck indoors with Harry. Equally dangerous.

Casting a Warming Charm, Severus exited the front doors, starting for the path leading to Hagrid’s. As he walked, he pursed his lips and contemplated the conundrum that was Harry Potter.

When Harry had applied to be Defence professor, Severus hadn’t thought anything of it. After all, he’d done a few years as an Auror, and their relationship, while distant, had been cordial ever since Harry’s testimony had got Severus acquitted of all war crimes.

And then Harry had moved into the castle and had become rather...attentive. More than, truth be told. He’d made it a point to sit next to Severus at meals, and frequently stopped by Severus’ quarters for late-night visits. Severus even began considering them friends. He didn’t dare contemplate they could be more than that, despite Minerva’s hints to that effect. “You both watch each other, Severus,” she’d say over their weekly meetings. “It’s time you do something about it.”

But Severus couldn’t ever find the courage to approach Harry in that way. The thought that he could be wrong, that Harry was just being friendly and could laugh at him, was abhorrent. Disturbed by that thought, Severus slowed.

When someone cleared their throat, it startled him out of his reverie.

“Severus?” Harry was approaching. “Minerva says all the kids are gone,” he said, falling into step beside Severus unselfconsciously.

“Yes.” Severus regarded him carefully. “I know you agreed to stay here and assist with any students, but since they’re all gone, you are released from that agreement.”

Harry shrugged. “What are you going to do over the holidays?”

“Stay here.”

“Then I’m staying, too.” Harry smiled. “I’ll keep you company. Plus, it’ll be nice to have some quiet time.”

Severus narrowed his eyes and paused under a tree. “With me?”

Harry blushed slightly, but held Severus’ gaze steadily. “Yes.”

Severus leaned forward. “Why?”

“Because I like spending time with you.” Harry moved closer. “I always have.”

“Why?” Severus repeated softly.

Instead of answering, Harry tilted his head back and smiled. “Look.”

Following the direction of Harry’s gaze, Severus spotted the sprig of mistletoe, frozen into an icicle. His eyes widened.

“Well, would you look at that? How fortunate,” whispered Harry. “Best not mess with tradition.” And, leaning in, he kissed Severus. When, panting, they finally surfaced, he smiled. “So I’m staying. I hope that’s all right with you.”

Slowly, Severus smiled back. “I believe that will be acceptable.”

Arms linked, they returned to the castle. Naturally, Minerva was waiting at the door. Her eyes lingered on their linked arms. “It seems you’ve the castle to yourselves, gentlemen. I was just leaving.”

“Happy Christmas, then, Minerva,” said Harry, clinging fast to Severus.

“And to both of you.” She smiled expectantly at Severus, who sighed.

“Happy Christmas,” he finally muttered.

She nodded and winked. “So it seems.”
