Mirror Images

When Severus had first encountered it in an obscure classroom he’d immediately known something was...off.
“You’ve good instincts, my boy,” said Dumbledore when confronted. “But I’ve nowhere else to keep it.”
“Your quarters, perhaps?” Severus deadpanned. “I imagine you’d be better at resisting the temptation to look than eleven-year-olds.”
Dumbledore blinked. “Whatever makes you think that?”
Which was how Severus ended up with the blasted Mirror of Erised in his quarters. It was a temptation, of course. At times he imagined he could hear a voice whispering, “Look at me...”, but he managed to ignore it.
Until Potter’s arrival.
~
His wards woke him and, groping for his wand, Severus left his bed, hurrying towards the potions storage room. It was attached to his quarters, and concealed in an obscure corner was the Mirror of Erised.
When he arrived he was both surprised and not to see Potter seated before it, staring, clearly entranced. Severus could only imagine what he was looking at.
Walking up behind him, Severus snapped, “Potter!”
Potter’s eyes met his in the mirror. “Isn’t it great, sir?”
Reluctantly, Severus looked, expecting to see Lily, but instead-- He jumped back. “What devilry is this?”
“Sir?”
“Get out!”
~
“It was bound to tempt him, Severus.” Dumbledore didn’t seem surprised. “I’m only surprised it took his this long.”
“He broke into my potions storage, Albus! He must be punished!”
“You may give him detention as you see fit.” Albus coughed. “But no further action should be necessary.”
Severus snorted. Like it or not, gazing into the Mirror, while dangerous, wasn’t illegal. Sadly.
“You never said what you saw the Mirror of Erised, Severus.”
Severus rose. “Goodnight, Headmaster.”
Once outside Albus’ office, Severus sagged. How could he ever forget the sight of him and Potter entwined in a loving embrace?
~
Years passed, yet Severus never again succumbed to the temptation to look into the Mirror of Erised. After securing it under Concealment Charms, he almost forgot about it. Almost.
As he lay dying in the Shack, however, he found himself regretting that. “Look at me...” the Mirror still whispered. Always.
“Snape!” cried Potter, recalling Severus to the present. “I’m looking at you, just stay with me!”
He force-fed Severus: dittany, anti-venom, Pain Potion-- And before losing consciousness, Severus realised Potter now looked just like the man he’d seen wrapped around him the one time he’d gazed into the Mirror. Salazar.
~
“What’s this?” Potter asked.
Looking up, Severus froze. “I didn’t realise it survived the attack.”
Pulling the cover off the Mirror of Erised, Potter stepped back. “I’d wondered what happened to it all those years ago.”
Severus’ eyes narrowed. “Is that why you’re hanging about?”
Potter stared at him. “I’m hanging about because I’m concerned about you and want to be sure you’re recovering well.”
“Indeed.”
“I can prove it.” Potter approached Severus. “Legilmise me.”
Severus scanned his face, seeing his sincerity. “That’s not necessary.”
Leaning in, Potter smiled. “You’re sure?”
“Potter--”
Pressing close, Potter hummed. “Because I am.”
~
They kissed, and despite his misgivings, Severus couldn’t stop. Together, they collapsed onto the sofa, Severus surrendering to passion. Potter proved eager and beautiful, Severus quickly losing himself in his taste and touch.
Afterward, they lay entwined, Severus caressing Potter’s skin. Glancing up, he froze, staring at their reflection in the Mirror of Erised.
“What?” Turning to look, Potter smiled. “Hey! That’s what I saw all those years ago.”
Severus blinked. “Impossible.”
“Why?”
Because I saw it, too. Severus closed his eyes.
Potter’s arms tightened around him. “Are you all right?”
Slowly, Severus relaxed. Apparently some things were inevitable. “Indeed.”
