“Why’d you insist we attend? It’s packed, and the champagne’s awful.”
“Really? You’re drinking enough of it.”
Hugo shrugs, grabbing another from a floating tray. “It’s free. Stop deflecting. What’s so special about this year’s Ministry Hallowe’en Ball?”
“It’s a masquerade! Tonight, I’m me, not Rose Weasley, daughter of war heroes, sister of Hugo Weasley, Quidditch star.”
“Like that, is it? Fine, just remember, everyone’s anonymous behind a mask, and with Death Eaters making a resurgence—”
“Nonsense, I’ll be fine.”
“Okay, just be careful.” Hugo smirks. “Now, who’s that hot dryad?”
“Which…?” Rose squints. “That’s Madam Lovegood. Hugo, you can’t!”
“Watch me.” Hugo saunters off, grinning.
Once alone, Rose walks toward the Atrium, shrouded with conjured fog. As mist envelops her, she’s embraced.
“You came.”
“Yes.”
“I wasn’t sure you would. Will anyone interrupt us tonight?”
“No.” Rose hesitates. “You never told me your name that day—”
“Rabastan.” His eyes glitter. “So, you like to live dangerously do you, Rose?”
Rose freezes. “I never told you my name.”
“I’ve my ways. Worried? Want to scurry back to your brother, or shall I show you the night of your life?”
Heat suffuses Rose. “Please.”
Smirking, Rabastan leads her into the mist.
