Defying physics: This rare crystal cools itself using pure magnetism

Research team identifies atacamite as a magnetocaloric material.
Deep in Chile’s Atacama Desert, scientists studied a green crystal called atacamite—and discovered it can cool itself dramatically when placed in a magnetic field. Unlike a regular fridge, this effect doesn’t rely on gases or compressors. Instead, it’s tied to the crystal’s unusual inner structure, where tiny magnetic forces get tangled in a kind of “frustration.” When those tangled forces are disrupted by magnetism, the crystal suddenly drops in temperature. It’s a strange, natural trick that could someday help us build greener, more efficient ways to cool things

Today is mostly cloudy and sweltering.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.  Bees are visiting the small metal birdbath again.

EDIT 7/6/25 -- It's raining, so I won't have to water anything today.  :D

FutureLearn

Italian for Beginners - Part 4 (Open University)
Much to my surprise I'm finding I'm able to complete the quizzes with fewer mistakes and understanding more, which is encouraging.

What do Popular Songs Mean? (University of Leeds)
Like the previous music course I've done with Leeds Uni, this was aimed at potential music students, which I imagine is only a very limited proportion of those taking FutureLearn courses.  Some things were interesting, some were a reminder of things I learnt on an OpenLearn course; at other times they would teach about analysis, but then when I came to work through an example for myself the answer would come up 'you may think xxx, but in this case yyy applies'.  And in at least one occasion there seemed to be a contradiction between something stated earlier and than later in the course.

OpenLearn

Egyptian Mathematics
I read through the course, but it lacks the presentation of later courses.  It was interesting to see a little about Egyptian mathematics, although very little has survived, probably because most of their maths had to do with practical problems they encountered rather than matters they deemed sufficiently important to save for posterity.

Babylonian Mathematics
Similarly with this course, although there was a small amount that was presumably kept for teaching purposes.  Unlike our modern maths, with a decimal system of counting, the Babylonians worked in 60s, so comparing then and now isn't always easy.

The Science of Nutrition & Healthy Eating
My latest badged course.  Definitely interesting and made me consider what I do eat.  Not sure it will change my diet - but I'm more aware of food labels and what I should be considering.

umadoshi: (berries in bowls (roxicons))
[personal profile] umadoshi
[personal profile] scruloose and I did make it to the little farmers' market down the road for its opening day of the season, and even managed to get there earlier than later! (I think it's open from 8 to 1, and we probably were there...a bit after 10?)

We made it home with two quarts of strawberries and one of cherries, new potatoes, a dozen eggs, and boneless chicken thighs, plus a bee balm for the garden, which we quickly tucked into a fairly open space in our little garden bed yesterday evening. (What was there before? UNKNOWN. Will I manage to reconstruct it from old posts or something? Also unknown. But hey, a plant!)

Reading: I finished Everything for Everyone: An Oral History of the New York Commune, 2052–2072 (M.E. O'Brien and Eman Abdelhadi), which was fantastic. On the fiction front, I followed it up with Tamsyn Muir's novella Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower (not really my thing--I continue to rarely bond with novellas, I guess--but interestingly done), Sacha Lamb's When the Angels Left the Old Country (marvelous), and Sofia Samatar's The Practice, the Horizon, and the Chain (again, didn't really bond emotionally, but it executed what it was doing beautifully).

Non-fiction: David Chang and Priya Krishna's Cooking at Home: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying About Recipes (And Love My Microwave), which is, like...primarily actually a David Chang book that Priya Krishna did a ton of heavy-lifting assisting on (which may be very normal for co-written cookbooks, but in this case she was interjecting and clarifying in her own voice as well as doing a fair bit of the actual writing in his voice, and it was all very transparent that it was being done that way, but also a little odd to read). I think I bought this as a sale ebook before hearing that Chang (the Momofuku guy) is something of an asshole, but then when I was reading it, it felt really promising as a book that might be genuinely useful for me (and even by cookbook standards, its ebook is terribly formatted), so I was pleasantly surprised to readily find a used half-price hard copy available on line, which is winging its way to me now. I've also made sure that Krishna's own Indian-Ish: Recipes and Antics from a Modern American Family is now on the wishlist where I keep an eye out for ebook sales.

And now I'm reading An Everlasting Meal: Cooking with Economy and Grace by Tamar Adler, which is a cookbook mostly in the form of essays on cooking as a thoughtful/mindful practice.

Watching: One more Murderbot episode to go in this season, and oh, I hope we get a second one. I'm going to miss this little show.

We finished watching the second season of Kingdom (the historical zombies k-drama), which I found very satisfying. The ending very much sets up a subsequent season, and there's a movie out that fills in the backstory of the person/people we glimpse at the end of season 2 who would presumably be extremely central in any further season, but I don't think we feel inspired to watch said backstory movie unless a third season of the show is ever announced and it becomes relevant in that way.

Facts: Sake/Seishu

1.) The word sake (酒) in Japanese usually means alcohol, which is a broader term. Nowadays, what we think is sake points to seishu, which is alcohol made from rice, rice malt and water with a special process unique to Japan. (This alcohol has an unique taste. Do I like it? I'm not sure.)

2.) You can drink sake cold or hot. You can mix it with other beverages if you like, but sake is at its best taken straight cold or hot. People admire the taste and aroma of it by drinking it without anything else. (This is why I am undetermined. I have only had the dry type warmed. I would love to try the sweet chilled. Do not confuse with Korean Soju. You might start a war. Not kidding.)

Today we made a smoothie with:

1 cup orange juice
1 cup Brown Cow vanilla yogurt
1 banana
1/2 cup frozen strawberries
1/2 cup ice

The result is bright pink and on the thin side. It tastes mostly of orange. It's okay, but not as good as the tropical version from earlier.

125,000-year-old ‘fat factory’ run by Neanderthals discovered in Germany

Stone Age humans living by a lake in what’s now Germany systematically processed animal carcasses for fatty nutrients — essentially running what scientists describe as a “fat factory” to boil bones on a vast scale, according to new research.

Note that another thing you can make with animal fat is pemmican: a stable, high-energy trail food made with fat, powdered meat, and a carbohydrate such as berries.  Since it's not something you'd make in a hot climate like Africa (where humans evolved) but rather in a cold climate (such as northern Europe), I'm suddenly wondering if it is in fact a Neanderthal or Denisovan recipe.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 4/5/25 -- I refilled the thistle feeder.

I picked up the concrete paver that we used for fireworks last night, along with scraps of paper and cardboard left behind.

Volunteer sunflowers are blooming under the fly-through feeder.

EDIT 4/5/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 4/5/25 -- I picked a handful of blackberries in the prairie garden.

EDIT 4/5/25 -- I watered the telephone pole garden and some of the savanna seedlings.  A sunflower in the telephone pole garden is close to blooming.  :D

EDIT 4/5/25 -- I pulled some weeds from the septic garden.

Fireflies are out.  Cicadas are singing.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

[community profile] sunshine_revival's next challenge is:
Tunnel of Love
Journaling: The romance of summer! What do you love? Write about anything you feel sentimental about or that gets your heart pumping.
Creative: Write a love poem to anyone or anything you like.

This is a topic I've been thinking about a lot lately. As an aro-ace person growing up in a time before we really had labels for those things (and, frankly, even now when some people still just don't get it), I've had a lot of experiences of being told that the way I loved people was wrong or not good enough. I'm... well, I was about to say I'm lucky to have people in my life now who don't see my love as lesser because it isn't romantic and never will be, and that is true, but also I have worked damn hard to accept myself as I am and to put energy into relationships with people who get me. So it's part luck, part skill. :P

I recently got a formal diagnosis of being on the autism spectrum. (I promise this relates.) This was something I had suspected for a long time, but having it confirmed has led me to take stock of a lot of past experiences and shine a different light on them. I've always had intense "special interests," but early on in life I learned to downplay them because of other people's disapproval. I think I am a much more... passionate person than others might suspect? I've only been able to let it show a little in fannish spaces where it's more accepted to fall in love with a fandom, or become infatuated with a character, or be swept off your feet by a storyline. Those aren't metaphors, it's really what it feels like, and I feel that way about a lot of things!

When I was a kid one of my special interests was ancient Egypt. I remember flipping through history books and feeling a physical level of joy and contentment as I pored over photos of pyramids and papyri, because I just loved loved loved what I was seeing so much. When the prompt asks about what gets my heart pumping, I think of things like that. But I learned to hide that part of myself because people didn't get it. I want to work on changing this. I know that kind of love is still there and I can still tap into it, and I want a future for myself where I'm proud that it's a part of me. That feels far away right now, but there was also a time when being proud of being aro-ace felt very far away, so I think there's cause for hope.

Challenge #2

Tunnel of Love
Journaling: The romance of summer! What do you love? Write about anything you feel sentimental about or that gets your heart pumping.
Creative: Write a love poem to anyone or anything you like

I'm not sure if I would categorize it as romance per se, but the one thing I love about summer in the northeast, where it's not warm year-round, is being able to go to an outdoor pool. I swim laps in an indoor pool, both in summer and the off-season, but I love being able to sit at an outdoor pool and read and relax. I joined a gym out where my mom lives several years ago, anticipating that I would need to move in with her, or at least stay with her for long periods, to help her out. The gym has both an indoor and an outdoor pool, and the outdoor pool deck is one of my favorite places in the world, and something I don't have in the city. The members are a mix of families with young kids, families with older kids, young couples without kids yet, and seniors, and it's fun to watch the kids play in the fountain in the family pool. It's surrounded by trees, and it's really just a lovely place to be when the weather is nice. It's definitely one of my top enjoyments in life.

As for the creative side of the challenge, I've never been much of a poet. So instead I'm going to share some summer-themed haikus by Bashō:

In bright summer moon,
and with softly clapping hands,
I herald the dawn.

Summer in the world
floating on little waves
of shimmering lake.

Orchid is breathing
its pungent incense into
a butterfly's wings.

Not my best work. I've done several Alice in Wonderland-themed collages which are much better than this. But my brain is not my friend at the moment, and I have filled up the last of my three inserts I was using for collage so I will be using my Agatha Christie notebook and my art notebook going forward. Both are smaller but I think that might be a good thing.

Facts: Rum

1.) Its origins trace back to the Caribbean in the 17th century. The spirit was first distilled from sugarcane byproducts like molasses, which was abundant in the region. (I prefer golden rum over silver rum.)

2.) In moderation, rum contains antioxidants such as polyphenols, which are derived from the sugarcane plant. However, excessive consumption can negate any potential benefits. (So, don't use this as an excuse to get piss ass drunk.)

ADHD assessment on the 18th went well, was scheduled for the DIVA test a week later, and scored 9 out of 9 for both attention deficit AND hyperactivity, and that I had this at a young age but had "limited impairment due to compensation of external structure" which according to my doctor basically means I was pretty heavily sheltered and tended to by my mom (which is true) so I didn't get a chance to really fuck up. And I mean, looking back, yeah, I can see it? But also....:\ Now as an adult trying to navigate the world, I'm kind of...whew, boy. XD;

SO YEAH THAT'S GREAT wow, lmao, I'm so. Frustrated. And I have a bachelor's degree and I was like but I have a bachelor's degree, I was able to focus and do that, and she was like yes, in something you're interested in (art). And I was like well okay. :\ This explains a lot but I'm not super thrilled.

UHM YEAH so yeah. I have a PCP appointment on the 17th to do blood work and maybe look at blood pressure medication, but also to talk about a medication that my ADHD doc would like me to go on (that's not a stimulant, bc we gotta get blood pressure in order, plus I gotta talk to the hospital in GA for records bc I have a bigeminy and ADHD doc wants to look at those results before putting me on stimulants (although there is a non-stimulant medication that she recommended to try first). BUT she thinks my problems with staying and committing to work is agoraphobia and/or a panic disorder. Uhm. So yeah, my poor brain is a goddamn mess lmao whoops.

Will has been an absolute trooper through all though, even though I keep making terrible jokes about them being stuck with me now that we're married. XD Although they have suspected this probably longer than I have so none of this is that much of a surprise for them.

In other news, today is July fourth, I'm not feeling patriotic at all, and the fireworks aren't helping. But here's some recent harvest photos.

Today is mostly sunny and hot.

I fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches plus a mourning dove.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- I checked the south lot and put topsoil in a few low spots, prior to our fireworks show tonight.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- I picked up a trough pot that fell off the old picnic table, restored the curry plant and purple basil as best I could, then watered them and a few other things in the house yard.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- I sowed 6 pots with mulberry seeds. Half are from a particularly pleasing mulberry sapling near the west end of the old fishpond, the other half from a mulberry that was left on the porch step as if a gift.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- I watered the telephone pole garden and a few seedlings in the savanna.

My partner Doug mowed the ritual meadow and prairie paths.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- I picked a handful of herbs to make a skillet scramble for supper.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- I picked a handful of blackberries in the prairie garden. There are plenty left; I ran out of heat tolerance long before I ran out of berries. :D

Cicadas are singing.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- I picked a handful of blackberries in the prairie garden. Still more left, but I'll have to hunt those another day, because it is still hot and the sun is about to set.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- We did our home fireworks show.  :D  I'm sure it confused the bats and the fireflies.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

At the start of the month I entertained the fleeting thought of trying to post every day in July, especially with [community profile] sunshine_revival (in which I have in no way participated) going on, but. Well. *gestures at current date* And as we all know, something-something-only-perfect-results-matter, etc. etc. etc.

But here. It's Friday. The world is terrifying, but at least for this moment the sun is out. I spent most of my workday in a style guide meeting, which was genuinely pretty fun; tonight we're seeing Ginny and Kas because this week it's better for them than our usual Saturday hangout.

Tomorrow the (very) wee farmers' market that's only a few blocks away is getting underway for the season. I have ambitions of actually rolling out of bed and walking over in hopes of strawberries, even though tomorrow and Sunday are also Eevee community day in Pokemon Go, so I'm also hoping to leave the house those afternoons. Leaving the house twice in one day is not exactly a thing that happens often, and as a result, the prospect of it is exhausting. ^^; But here's hoping!

There's been zero doubt for a long time now that my only actual investment in Pokemon Go is the pursuit of shinies, and community days are the best chance to get shinies of a given critter, and Eevee, see, has EIGHT possible evolutions, so if there's any faint hope of ever having a full set of shinies of those, well, it's this weekend.

(I can't remember if I've said here that this is a crystalized perfect demonstration of why it's really, really good that I don't gamble. I'm usually pleased when I catch a new-to-me Pokemon, but it's pretty minor. But rather than setting the game aside, since it mostly hasn't resulted in me actually getting outside and walking much more than I had been, the hope of catching a shiny critter keeps me opening it back up. Nobody get me into slot machines, okay? [That sounds facetious, but I mean it very seriously.])

That's all I've got right now. Stay well, friends.

This short narrative puzzle game follows a man from his death, through a spiritual dream realm, and into acceptance and new life. It wasn't part of the Latin American Games Showcase, but I indirectly found it through there; the developers Hermanos Magia are based in Peru.

black and white image of a lens-shaped world with stylized people and animals walking on top and bottom as rain falls from above

I loved the hand-drawn art style and the symbolic imagery, interweaving the natural and human worlds. It's like an interactive experimental short film. The puzzles are mostly classic types (Simon, Pipe Dream, etc.) sometimes slightly obscured by the artistic presentation. You could say interpreting the imagery is a kind of bonus puzzle. The challenge is minimal, just enough to keep you engaged in the soul's journey. There are no instructions but they're not needed; whenever you don't know what to do, clicking around will reveal something in a moment, and what it reveals may surprise and delight you.

I found the game really lovely and heartfelt, though it is very short. They do say up front that it's a "30 minute experience," so no shade at all, I just enjoyed it so much I wished it had been a little longer!

Arrog is available on PC (currently on sale at $1.49 USD), Android (currently on sale at $0.60 USD), iOS and PlayStation ($2.99 USD), and on Switch ($3.99 USD).

Facts: Bourbon

1.) Many people assume it has to come from Kentucky, but that’s not true. While over 95% of the world’s bourbon does come from the Bluegrass State, it can technically be made anywhere in the country. This legal requirement was solidified by Congress in 1964 when bourbon was declared “America’s native spirit.” (I love the deep burn of a good Bourbon.)

2.) After their first and only use, these barrels are often sold to distilleries in Scotland, Ireland, and even Mexico, where they give new life to Scotch, Irish whiskey, tequila, and even rum. This rule ensures bourbon gets maximum flavor from fresh oak each time. (If it works.)

Getting the serious stuff -- and the huge elephant in the room -- out of the way, I'm trying to just keep living my life while The Sword Of Damocles hangs over my head (a feeling many of us are sharing no doubt). I'm continuing to take enjoyment wherever I can, helping where I can. I'm very concerned about the amount of people that are and will be experiencing food insecurity, so I've been and will continue to donate to a couple of local groups in my neighborhood: one serves hot meals, both at their facility and delivering to homebound, and the other distributes packaged food and sundries in the park every Saturday. And of course I'm donating to orgs like the ACLU who continue to do great work. Looking for other ways I can help.

Starting on July 14, I will be attending Karen Attiah's "Race, Media and International Affairs 101" class. She used to teach the class at Columbia, but they cancelled it because DEI (eyeroll). She took a survey on Bluesky to see if people would be interested in attending it as an independent series on Zoom and there was overwhelming interest. She's posted information on the class here (she's calling it Resistance Summer School). Summer session filled up, so she was offering a Fall session too and not sure if that has filled up yet. There's different pricing tiers and depending on which tier you choose there are certain perks. It looks to be a really interesting and informative class, so I'm looking forward to it.

I'll be continuing to swim and work out and do my best to stay fit. And reading. Lots and lots of reading, both serious stuff and light-hearted poolside.

On the creative side, I've taken up needlepoint and completed my first project. I started small, with a bookmark, and while the result is kind of sad (and the backing that came with the kit didn't fit the canvas well so I had to cut, and I have issues cutting in a straight line), it's not bad for a first try. And at least I chose a cute pattern. I'll be continuing to try different canvases.

not quite a masterpiece under the cut )

I also wrote a story for [community profile] intoabar, which I got some nice feedback on:

For new friends, personal posts not on Tuesdays are called 'Into the Void' as in 'Screaming into the Void'

THANK YOU to everyone for the well wishes on the new job. I will respond individually but I just wanted to do a quick blast of thanks now. Orientation went well. I have clients starting MONDAY! I am low-key terrified, but that's to be expected with something so new. So my schedule will be 8 am to 2 pm with going from one client's house to a second client.

Lots of deep breaths...

THANK YOU!

Birdfeeding

Today is partly sunny and hot.

I fed the birds. I refilled the thistle feeder. I've seen a large mixed flock of sparrows and house finches plus a male cardinal.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 7/3/25 -- I took a few more pictures around the yard, mostly flowers at the end of the driveway.

EDIT 7/3/25 -- I dug up three pots of wild senna and one of purple echinacea that had seeded themselves in the savanna, hopefully to transplant them elsewhere if they survive.

I've seen a pair of mourning doves and a gray catbird. I also saw a very large bird, possibly a vulture or eagle, flying over the field to the west.

EDIT 7/3/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 7/3/25 -- We hooked up the new, flat water hose. The "non-kinking" label is a complete lie; it is the most prone to kinking of any hose I've ever used. Straightening it out enough to work is a bitch. However, it is extremely lightweight and completely flexible, so those are pluses. Also the multifunction water wand is by far the best nozzles I've ever used. I favor with "shower" and "flat" functions the most. The new picnic table garden and septic garden have been thoroughly watered.

EDIT 7/3/25 -- I watered the old picnic table garden and the plants in the house yard.

The corn is tasseling. The pollen hangs heavy on the wind with a sweet, dusty, buttery, golden smell.

Fireflies are coming out.

I saw a skunk in the house yard. I've seen a squirrel at the hopper feeder.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

Climate Change

When rainforests died, the planet caught fire: New clues from Earth’s greatest extinction

When Siberian volcanoes kicked off the Great Dying, the real climate villain turned out to be the rainforests themselves: once they collapsed, Earth’s biggest carbon sponge vanished, CO₂ rocketed, and a five-million-year heatwave followed. Fossils from China and clever climate models now link that botanical wipe-out to runaway warming, hinting that losing today’s tropical forests could lock us in a furnace we can’t easily cool.

I pointed this out decades ago and nobody listened. Now here we are. But hey, someone could roll up this newspaper and beat Brazil with it.
