A Howling Good Time
~
Severus had always skirted the line as a professor, managing to avoid upsetting students’ parents while simultaneously making it clear to the children how much he despised them. Yet he’d never received a Howler, a point of pride for him, until that fateful day.
The red envelope shot into the Great Hall, and the entire room went silent as it hovered in front of Severus.
“YOU BASTARD! HOW DARE YOU? HE’S MINE! NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE THAT, DO YOU UNDERSTAND? LEAVE HARRY POTTER ALONE!”
Once it finished, there was shocked silence, then the room was abuzz. Minerva coughed. “How...interesting.”
~
Severus relaxed the following week when there were no further incidents. A ridiculous prank. And since Howlers weren’t tracked by the Ministry, he let it go.
Rumours were rampant, naturally. Severus ignored them, although he was amused when we overheard two seventh-year Ravenclaws speculating on whether he and Potter were an item. I wish.
Settling in for a leisurely wank Sunday morning, Potter was very much on Severus’ mind, however. He had just achieved a satisfying rhythm when--
“I TOLD YOU TO STAY AWAY FROM HIM! HOW DARE YOU!”
Severus fell out of bed and, cursing, incinerated it. That’s enough!
~
Potter looked good when Severus finally saw him. Rumour said he was perhaps two years from becoming Head Auror. Severus was impressed. He didn’t show it.
“Howlers?” Potter scratched the back of his head absently. “Did you recognise the woman’s voice?”
“If I had, why would I be here?” Severus snapped.
“Right, sorry.” Potter smiled lopsidedly. “So you want me to track this person?”
“I want you to prevent it from happening again.” Severus huffed. “It’s obviously some jilted paramour of yours.”
Potter hummed. “Not mine, sorry. I’m gay, no jilted girlfriends here.”
And suddenly, the trip was worth it.
~
“I know what we could try,” said Potter after more discussion. “Dinner.”
Severus, who had been pacing Potter’s office, paused. “How will that help us track this miscreant?”
Potter smiled. “It won’t, but I’m hungry, and I don’t think well when hungry.” He shrugged. “Plus, if this person’s tracking you, maybe us eating together will lure them out.”
Severus hummed. “As long as you’re prepared to endure a Howler while we dine, I’ve no objections.”
“I think I can handle it.” Potter stood up. “Shall we?”
A date with Potter. Things are looking up. Severus inclined his head. “Lead on.”
~
No Howlers came during dinner. Sitting back, Potter smiled. “There’s one more thing we can try.”
Severus raised an eyebrow. They’d flirted all evening. It had been most illuminating. “Oh?”
Standing, Potter extended his hand. “Coffee at my place?”
“I don’t drink coffee,” Severus responded automatically.
Potter hummed. “That’s okay, I don’t either.”
Arriving at Potter’s home, they reached for each other. Backing Severus up against the wall Potter kissed him feverishly, and Severus responded in kind.
Things were just getting good when--
“DON’T TOUCH HIM, YOU BASTARD!”
Potter moved so fast Severus barely saw him pull his wand. “Stupefy!”
~
“I wasn’t aware you could Stun Howlers.”
Potter nodded, circling it. “Yeah, it’s not common knowledge, but you can.” He sighed. “I can’t believe she’s this desperate.”
“You know who sent it?”
“Romilda Vane. She’s always been obsessed, but this is taking things too far.”
Severus frowned. “Why send them to me, though?”
“I don’t know, although--” Potter coughed. “Now that I think about it, she was at the last Auror Ball. She probably overheard me talking to Hermione--” He blushed.
Severus smirked. “About me?” he asked, tone silky.
“Maybe.” Potter smiled. “I’ll tell you more once we settle Romilda.”
~
“We found stacks of Howler paper at her place when we got there,” said Ronald Weasley. “And she’d placed Tracking Charms on you and Snape, Harry.”
Potter nodded. “Then we’ve got her. Howlers aren’t illegal, but Tracking people without Ministry approval is.”
“Yep.” Weasley cast a speculative look at Severus. “She really doesn’t like you, Professor. She had pictures of you with darts through them.”
Potter sighed. “Sad. Is Luna seeing her?”
Weasley nodded. “We’re remanding her to the Janus Thickey until she can be prosecuted, if you press charges.”
“Unnecessary,” murmured Severus. Time with Lovegood should be rehabilitation enough.
~
“What now?” Severus asked as they exited the Ministry.
Potter linked their arms. “We finish what Romilda interrupted?”
“Acceptable.” Severus smirked. “You could also tell me what Ms Vane overheard you saying to Ms Granger.”
Potter blushed. “Just...how much I’d like to get to know you better.”
“Is that what it’s called these days?”
Potter laughed. “I wasn’t explicit!”
“You should be with me,” purred Severus.
“Don’t worry.” Potter grinned. “I will be. Oh, and I should warn you. While we’re safe from Romila’s Howlers, I can be...loud.”
“You’re a howler?” Severus hummed. “I’ll...manage.” And he did.

Date: 2014-03-29 01:31 am (UTC)I liked the idea that they were not only not in contact, but that neither of them had actually any intention of ever acting on their feelings. That made the fact that they got together because of those howlers feel all the more like poetic justice to me. Poor Romilda... she accomplished precisely what she set about to prevent and, in the end, the one who'll end up losing is her...
This was a lovely and romantic story, ali. I enjoyed reading it greatly. :)

Thanks so much! I'm always thrilled when I can give you a smile. :)
