“He’s up to something!”
Minerva smiled. “If you say so. You’re the master spy, Severus.”
Severus huffed, frustrated. “You were his head of House. Surely you should investigate! You know him better than I do.”
“Oh, I don’t know about that.” Minerva’s smile was bland. “With effort, you and Harry could become good friends.”
“Friends? Me and Potter?” Severus snorted. “Impossible.”
“Impossible things seem to happen regularly around him,” countered Minerva. “Perhaps we should wait and see how things develop. Now, about Hogwarts’ finances--”
Severus’ eyes narrowed. Was it a rule that all Hogwarts headmasters had to be...annoyingly inscrutable?
~
“Potter.” Severus’ eyes narrowed. He’d taken the chance of telling Minerva his suspicions and now here was Potter at his door. Interfering tabby! She probably sent him. “What do you want?”
“To speak with you.” Potter held Severus’ gaze and didn’t back up, even when Severus tried to loom.
“About?”
“A project.” Potter sighed. “Look, I know you’re a private man, but this is something I’d rather discuss behind closed doors.”
Severus’ spy instincts awoke and, stepping aside, he gestured. “Very well. Come in.”
Potter smiled. “Thank you. I don’t think you’ll regret it.”
Severus stared after him. We’ll see.
~
“This is regarding academics?” Severus regarded Potter carefully, spy instincts on high alert.
Potter nodded. “I thought we could combine your Defence lessons with my Transfiguration projects.”
“Indeed. Proceed.”
As Potter discussed his ideas, Severus suddenly recognised what it was about Potter that’d made him...suspicious all term. Merlin! He’s flirting!
“...good melding of our disciplines, don’t you think?”
Severus blinked. “Possibly,” he said, trying to hide his shock.
Potter beamed. “Brilliant! Then maybe we can have that drink?”
Severus froze. “Drink?”
“Yes. As I mentioned earlier.” Potter’s smile deepened. “To...celebrate.”
Severus sighed. Spying never prepared me for this.
~
Collaborating with Potter in the classroom proved enjoyable, as did drinks, which morphed into intimate suppers. Severus’ spy instincts told him Potter was hoping for more...enjoyable collaborations. Severus had no objections, and yet, Potter did nothing.
One evening in Potter’s quarters, Severus decided enough was enough. “What are we doing, Potter?”
Potter shrugged. “Socialising?”
Severus’ lips twitched. “Every night?”
Potter blushed. “I’m...getting you accustomed to my company?”
“Ah.” Taking a chance, Severus set aside his brandy, reaching for Potter. “Well, I find your company...acceptable.”
Potter’s eyes widened, his mouth breaking into a wide grin. “Yeah?”
“Indeed.”
“Brilliant.”
~
“Did you ever uncover Harry’s plot?” Minerva asked at their next financial meeting.
Severus coughed. “My investigation showed he had no...nefarious plans.” Unless you count making me fall for him.
“Ah.” Minerva smiled. “Well it’s good to see you getting along. I’m glad you took my advice about getting to know him.”
Severus froze. “What makes you say that?”
Minerva laughed. “While I’m no master spy, Severus, even I can see there’s something between you.” She patted his hand. “I hope it works out.”
Horrified, Severus sputtered. “I--”
“Relax. I shan’t tell.” Minerva winked. “I can be discreet, too.”
