Evolution of a Saviour
~
Hearing the mewling, Severus looked up from his book. He was hiding from his Da, who’d be upset if he saw Severus reading about magic. But the mewling was insistent.
Cautiously, he looked around. The way was clear, so, after slipping his book into his pocket, he went in search of the sound.
The kitten looked pitiful, caught as it was on the log in the creek. Severus didn’t even hesitate before wading out to rescue it, and though, when he got it back to land, it clawed him and ran off, he grinned. It felt good being a saviour.
~
“Leave him alone, Black.”
Sirius glared at Severus, who glared back. “Piss off, Snivellus. Reg isn’t your concern.” And, sneering, he stomped away.
Reg sighed, climbing to his feet. “It’s fine, Sev.” He collected his books. “No need for you to be my saviour.”
“It’s not fine,” Severus insisted. Leaning in he whispered, “Slytherins stick together, remember?”
Reg smiled. “He’s still my brother.”
Shaking his head, Severus moved away.
“Although I do appreciate it.” Reg clasped his arm. “My hero.”
Severus blushed. “Don’t be ridiculous.”
“So...Astronomy tower tonight?” Reg grinned. “We could...snog.”
Severus blinked. Apparently heroes got rewarded.
~
Apparating into Godric’s Hollow, Severus immediately spotted the ruined cottage. I’m too late!
Entering the cottage, he heard a baby crying. Upon seeing Severus, the baby stopped, looking up with trusting green eyes.
Severus ran to Lily’s crumpled form and, moaning, collapsed to his knees, gathering her lifeless body close. “No--”
Closing his eyes, he rocked back and forth, holding her. “I failed--” he whispered brokenly.
When Dumbledore arrived Severus was still there. “You can guard her child,” he said. “Be a saviour to him.”
Severus didn’t say a word. Just then, he wasn’t feeling like much of a saviour.
~
“Let me help, Draco.” Severus’ voice was persuasive, but Draco flushed, shaking his head.
“No! It’s my task.”
“Just tell me--”
“Leave me alone!” With a sob, Draco spun, running down the hall.
Severus sighed. Despite his efforts, Draco was being secretive, insisting on blocking his mind, refusing to take Severus into his confidence. Bloody Bellatrix. She had to go and teach him Occlumency--
Turning away, Severus started for the dungeons. A soft noise made him pause. “Who’s there?”
No one replied, but Severus thought he caught the faint scent of treacle. Potter. Damn. Having to save everyone was exhausting.
~
And so it ends, Severus’ thought hazily.
As if in a dream, Potter appeared. He spoke but Severus couldn’t understand. “Take them,” he whispered, pushing his memories to the front of him mind. Something was burning its way down his cheeks. He realised his memories were leaking from him. “Take them...save the world.”
“Don’t you dare die!” Potter’s words penetrated the haze and Severus had just enough time to be surprised before a bezoar was shoved in his mouth.
Severus almost smiled. He’d tried to be a saviour, but it looked like that job would fall to Potter. Goodbye.
~
“You made it.” Severus stared at Potter, who looked very alive despite Albus’ prediction.
Potter smiled. “So did you.”
“Indeed.” It’d been surprising to wake up after the battle. Evidently, Potter had been determined. “I didn’t expect to.”
“Neither did I.” Tentatively, they smiled at each other. “I’ve chatted with Kingsley,” Potter said. “There’ll be no charges.”
Severus raised an eyebrow. “Exploiting your fame?”
Potters smiled. “For important things.”
“I’m important?” Severus asked.
Shockingly, Potter clasped his hand. “I saw your memories. All of them. Yes, you’re important.”
So this is what it’s like to be saved, Severus thought. Amazing.
~
“Unca Sev’rus!”
Severus sighed as a gaggle of redheaded children sprinted towards him. “Merlin, save me,” he murmured.
Harry, walking beside him, laughed. “Too late. You’ve been spotted.” His fingers tightened on Severus’ before letting go. “I’ll rescue you in time for dinner.”
“Some saviour you are,” Severus grumbled just as Rose reached him.
Holding up her arms she demanded, “Up!”
Severus obliged. “We must discuss proper etiquette, miss.”
More Weasley children milled about his feet. “Tell us a story!” shouted Fred II.
As Severus was led away, Hermione joined Harry. “Should we rescue him?”
Harry smiled. “He loves it.”
