2013 Beholder recs, week 1
Apr. 15th, 2013 10:10 amRight, so I've been meaning to do some
hp_beholder recs and here they are.
First, I have to say, I have enjoyed every single thing I've read there so far. The writing has been stellar. Kinda makes me wonder what the hell I'm doing in this fest... But, I digress. :)
Here are the standouts for me for from week one.
A Life of High Adventure, PG, ~4400 words, Molly/Arthur.
This story just blew me away with the totally believable back story for Molly. In fact, I think this shall be my Molly canon from now on. *nods*
She's young here, with the whole world ahead of her (or so she thinks), but she also quite recognizable as the determined and strong woman we see in canon. There is strongly hinted at child abuse (warned for in case you're squeamish) but it's mercifully off-screen and does not detract from the story one bit. In fact, it's rather necessary. Molly's 'voice' here, and her relationship with her brothers and Arthur is just wonderfully done. And, based on the last line, I think her life turned out just as she'd hoped. :)
The Muggles Have a Word For Them, PG-13, 8250 words, Hooch/Sinistra, Fat Lady/Violet.
No, no, don't run. Trust me!
So this one totally had me from the first line. Somehow the author brings the Fat Lady (excuse me - the Voluptuous Lady) to life brilliantly, bestowing on her personality and substance, and not only giving her thoughts and a believable backstory, but a fabulous voice which is just perfectly in keeping with the probable era of her (3D) youth. Her snide inner thoughts and shrewd observations had me rolling, and seeing the Hooch/Sinistra courtship/relationship unfold through her eyes was delightful.
And the female staff members' support group (the Coven) made me cheer!
That's it for now but please, if you see anything you enjoy, do remember to leave the creator some love. It makes all the difference. :)
