Portkey Plan
~
“You should kill me.”
Severus smirked. “Right now, or would you like to prepare an epitaph*?”
Albus smiled. “I’m dying.”
Severs continued examining Albus’ shrivelled hand. He could lie, but what was the point? “Indeed.”
“I may as well use it.”
Naturally. Severus shook his head, marvelling at Albus’ sheer single-mindedness. “What’s the plan now?”
Albus chuckled. “For you to kill me instead of an...innocent.”
Severus coughed. “Draco? Innocent?”
Albus inclined his head. “How does he plan to get Bellatrix into the castle? Portkey? Tunnel?”
“No idea.”
“He’ll succeed,” Albus said. “When he does, be ready.”
Aren’t I always?
~
Hidden, Severus watched Albus put to rest. Having to kill him had been...difficult, as hard a task as any in a lifetime of hard tasks.
Clutching the pendant Albus had given him only weeks before as ‘protection’, Severus exhaled as Albus’ tomb was sealed. Shielded from Apparation and Portkeys, it was a monument.
Slowly, people left. Amongst the last to go were Potter and, interestingly enough, Remus Lupin.
As Severus watched, Lupin turned, staring towards Severus’ hiding place.
He senses I’m here. Severus swallowed hard. But Lupin simply sighed, turning away.
And in silence, Severus bid his mentor goodbye.
~
I didn’t think it would end like this, Severus thought as he lay on the filthy floor. Voldemort had always been ruthless, but this was cold, even for him.
He’d taken preparations, of course, but nothing could make one ready to be poisoned to death by a snake.
Even Potter had come and gone. And so it ends.
The pendant around his neck was burning. Gasping for air, Severus clutched it. Albus, you charlatan. You said you had a plan--
Then came the unmistakable navel tug of a Portkey which took the rest of his breath. Severus knew no more.
~
“Severus?”
Severus frowned. That’s me. Possibly.
“Wake up, Severus.”
Eyes blinking open, Severus stared up into Lupin’s warmly amused eyes. “What--?”
“Before I answer any questions, drink this.”
Severus sniffed, detecting a Restorative Potion. He swallowed and within moments felt better. “What happened?”
“Harry defeated Voldemort. You’re officially dead.” Lupin raised a cup. “Tea?”
Severus raised an eyebrow. “That’s not an answer.”
“It’s the truth, though.” Lupin smiled. “You want details?”
“Yes.” Severus struggled to sit up. “How am I alive?”
Reaching out, Lupin fingered Severus’ pendant. “Portkey. Albus’ plan.”
Severus blinked. “That crafty--”
Lupin nodded. “Exactly. Now...tea?”
“Definitely.”
~
“Why didn’t Albus explain the pendant was a Portkey?”
Lupin snorted. “Albus? Explain something?”
“Point.” Severus scanned the newspaper declaring him exonerated. “Being dead’s rather pleasant.”
Lupin nodded. “And, being exonerated, you can return to life now.”
Severus pursed his lips. Lupin had been tireless in his quest to get him honoured as a war hero. “One thing’s puzzling. Why set the Portkey to find you?”
To Severus’ surprise, Lupin blushed. “Albus knew I’d protect you.”
“Why?”
Lupin’s silence was telling.
Severus blinked. “You...care for me?”
Lupin clasped Severus’ hand. “Yes.”
Severus smiled. Albus really had planned everything perfectly.
