Quick Study

Harry sipped brandy and fought not to fidget. Severus hated when he fidgeted.

Beside him, Severus seemed relaxed. And Lucius Malfoy kept talking. As usual. “...once the current unpleasantness is over, Narcissa can start throwing parties again--”

Severus hummed noncommittally. “Perhaps you should get through the trial first.”

Harry snorted, quailing beneath Lucius’ stare. “Sorry,” he said insincerely.

Lucius cleared his throat. “Anyway, about that--”

“We’ll discuss it at home, Lucius.” Rising, Severus set down his glass. “Thank you for the brandy.”

Lucius inclined his head. “My home is always open to you.”

“Indeed.” Severus gestured to Harry. “Shall we?”

Once they were home, Harry exhaled. “I’m exhausted.”

Severus nodded. “Lucius can be...tiring. Fortunately, we shouldn’t have to deal with him again for weeks.”

“Should I testify for him?” Harry asked as they prepared for bed.

Severus raised an eyebrow. “You actually heard that? I didn’t think you were paying attention.”

Harry blinked. “What? I always listen when Lucius speaks.” He snorted. “It’s too dangerous not to.”

“Indeed.” Severus smirked. “You have learned something.”

“That’s not all I’ve learned,” Harry purred, dragging Severus towards the bed.

Severus laughed. “You’ve become a quick study.”

Harry grinned. “I’ve the best tutor.”
