Through Thick and Thin

Sighing, Harry stretched. He loved lazy weekends, although he’d plans for the day. I hope Severus agrees.
“You’re thinking very loudly,” Severus murmured, turning the page of his book.
Laughing, Harry sat up. “I can’t hide anything from you, can I?”
Severus smirked. “Just spit it out,” he said, setting aside his book.
“I want to proceed with adoption,” said Harry, bracing for Severus’ reaction.
“I thought as much,” said Severus. “I contacted Madam Whitcomb. We’ve an appointment for later today.”
Harry gaped. “How--?”
Severus smiled. “I’m not thick, Harry. I know you.”
Harry exhaled. “I love you.”
“I know.”
~
“That’s the paperwork, gentlemen.” Madam Whitcomb smiled. “The only remaining decision is which child you’d like.”
Harry squeezed Severus hand. “The hardest decision.”
She nodded. “Notify me once you’ve made your choice.”
Once alone, Harry sighed. “How do we choose?”
“No idea,” admitted Severus. “Shall we tour the playground?”
“Okay.”
Watching the children play, Harry spotted a girl and boy in a corner. He edged closer. “...stick together through thick and thin.”
The girl’s lip wobbled. “What if they pick only one of us?”
The boy hugged her. “We’re a package deal.”
Harry looked at Severus, who sighed and nodded.
~
“You look exhausted,” said Hermione when Harry showed up to work the following week.
Harry sighed. “I never thought adopting could be so tiring. And thanks for helping us set up the house, by the way.”
“Of course.” Reaching over, she clasped his hand. “Friends through thick and thin, remember?”
Harry grinned tiredly. “Well this weekend was definitely through thick.”
She chuckled. “Are the children settling in?”
“I can’t tell yet.” Harry shook his head. “Sarah’s...quiet, and Stephen just grunts.”
“Well, they’ll adjust.”
“Yeah. I’m just hoping we all manage to adjust.”
“You will.”
Harry sighed. “I hope so.”
~
Yawning, Harry leaned against the kitchen counter. It’d been an intense few weeks, but everyone seemed to be adjusting.
Teddy was visiting and, fortunately, seemed to have bonded with Sarah and Stephen. Thank Merlin.
Harry jumped as arms surrounded him. “It’s me,” whispered Severus.
Relaxing, Harry sighed. “Sorry, I’m exhausted.”
“As am I.” Severus nuzzled his neck. “At least the children are getting along.”
“Oh?”
“Indeed,” Severus murmured. “Listen.”
“...lucky,” said Teddy.
“How come?” Sarah asked.
“Uncle Harry and Uncle Sev are brilliant.” Teddy nodded. “They’ll see you through thick and thin.”
Stephen’s smile almost made Harry’s heart burst. “Yeah.”
