Living a Transfigured Life

~

“I have my misgivings about this arrangement, Mr Zabini.” Severus crossed his arms. “In fact, I’m not sure why I’ve engaged you in the first place.”

Blaise smirked. “You’ve engaged me to help transfigure your reputation. I do run the best public relations firm in the wizarding world, after all.”

Severus snorted. “It’s also the only public relations firm.”

Blaise shrugged that off. “In any case, I’ve come up with a strategy for us to make your reputation stellar.”

“Indeed.” Severus sighed. “Well it certainly cannot make it much worse. What do you propose?”

Blaise hummed. “You should start dating.”

~

This is ridiculous, fumed Severus. And it can’t possibly work. There’s no one with sufficient reputation to transfigure mine.

Blaise, however, seemed to think there was, although, vexingly, he’d not agreed to share that person’s identity with Severus. A blind date. Insanity.

And yet, Severus had agreed to go. It’s simple curiosity, nothing more. I’ll see the person, make my apologies, and escape.

Plan established, Severus entered the Leaky Cauldron, proceeding to the back left corner booth, as instructed. When he saw who was waiting, however, Severus’ eyes widened.

“Hello, Severus.” Harry Potter smiled in welcome. “Thanks for meeting me.”

~

Drink in hand, Severus eyed Potter. It’d been eighteen months since he’d last seen him; he’d been transfigured from a handsome boy into an attractive man. “How did Zabini talk you into this?”

Potter smiled. “You do know he’s dating Hermione, right? She’s the reason he has that PR firm in the first place. She explained how they function for Muggles.”

Severus suppressed a shiver. Even Potter’s voice had improved, deepened into a pleasing baritone. “I wasn’t aware, no.”

Potter sipped his drink. “Anyway, I’m helping you because I want to.”

“Why?”

Potter looked around. “Let’s talk someplace more...private.”

~

“You realise our Side-Along-Apparation from the Leaky may be seen as...suspicious?” Severus murmured once they landed. “People will suspect we’re engaged in an illicit sexual affair.”

Potter grinned. “Isn’t that what we want them to think?” He gestured. “Follow me.”

Recognising Grimmauld Place, Severus trailed after Potter, who instead of leading him inside, drew him into the back garden.

Mouth dropping open, Severus looked around. Potter has transfigured the place. Gone were the overgrown weeds and tangled brush, replaced by a beautifully coiffed garden. In the centre stood a gazebo.

“Here,” said Potter. “Let’s sit.”

Intrigued, Severus nodded agreement.

~

“Is this about Lily?” Severus asked once seated. That’s the only reason Potter could possibly want to speak with me alone.

Potter looked surprised. “Mum? No. I mean, I’d love to hear your stories about her, but I’ve seen your memories.” He hesitated. “No, this is about us.”

“Us?” Severus frowned. “There’s no us.”

“Not yet,” agreed Potter, for the first time that evening appearing nervous. The expression transfigured his face, making him seem younger. “But there could be.”

“You mean pretend we’re involved?” Severus said. “Why would you do that?”

Potter smiled ruefully. “Who says it would be pretending?”

~

It took Severus a moment to understand. “You can’t possibly mean--”

Potter ran a hand through his hair. “Does it help if I say that I’ve had a crush on the Half-Blood Prince since my sixth year?”

Severus ruthlessly suppressed his elation. “I am not him. Not any more.”

Potter shrugged. “I’m not the same person I was my sixth year either.” He sighed. “The war transfigured us all.”

“Indeed.” Severus frowned. “Did you plan this then?”

“Tonight’s date?” Potter grinned. “It was Hermione’s idea. She knows how I feel about you.” He coughed. “Do you mind?”

Severus smiled. “No.”

~

“So now what?” Severus asked.

“Now?” Potter bit the corner of his bottom lip. “I’d hoped we could continue our date, actually.”

“Return to the Leaky Cauldron you mean?” Severus tamped down his disappointment. “Well, certainly, if that’s your wish--”

“No.” Potter stood, extending his hand to Severus. “I’d hoped we could go inside. I had Kreacher prepare dinner just in case.”

“I see.” Severus raised an eyebrow. “You were quite confident, weren’t you?”

Potter’s smile transfigured his face. “Not really. Just optimistic.”

“Indeed.” Standing, Severus accepted Potter’s hand. “Very well. Lead on.”

When their hands touched, Potter exhaled. “Brilliant.”

~

Potter had transfigured the inside of Grimmauld Place, too. Instead of the dreary interior Severus recalled, it was bright and airy, completely redone.

“Ginny,” Potter explained, still clinging to Severus’ hand. “She helped me redecorate, and Bill Weasley supervised. His Curse-Breaking expertise came in quite handy.”

“Indeed.” Curious about Ginevra, Severus nevertheless remained silent. Potter sensed something, however.

“Ginny’s just a close friend.” Potter leaned in, kissing him. It was far too short. “Next time we’ll do that in public.”

“We should work out the kinks first,” Severus whispered as their faces moved close once again.

Potter grinned. “Good plan.”

~

“Our campaign’s a success.” Zabini pushed the latest copy of the Prophet across the desk. “Your reputation’s been completely transfigured; your public approval numbers are soaring. Letting them take pictures of you snogging Potter was genius.”

Severus huffed. “It was sheer chance.” He’d almost hexed the photographer, only Harry holding him back had prevented it.

Zabini smiled. “You taught us there’s no such thing as chance. And for what it’s worth, sir, you deserve this.”

Severus snorted. “Indeed.”

“Our contract’s fulfilled.” Zabini rose. “Good luck.”

“Thank you.”

Zabini grinned. “I hope you still feel thankful when you see my bill.”

~

Malfoy Manor had been transfigured. Instead of white peacocks, wedding guests strolled the grounds. Every wedding detail had been handled by Narcissa Malfoy, in conjunction with Molly Weasley.

“I don’t see why we invited the press,” huffed Severus, watching from one of the upstairs windows.

Embracing him from behind, Harry rested his chin on Severus’ shoulder. “It’s Luna, she’s not typical press. And I want everyone to know you’re mine.”

“Feeling proprietary?”

Harry’s arms tightened. “Definitely.”

“Very well. Let’s go so I can claim you as my own.”

“You’re being proprietary, too.”

Spinning in Harry’s arms, Severus kissed him. “Indeed.”

sneaky!harry...i love it! and yes, of course it would make severus seem more "acceptable" to be dating harry, but lucky for him, harry wants him for *himself*, and not just for the public relations.

very well done!
