“The Dursleys are back in their home, sir.” Hestia exhaled. “They complained the entire time, but it’s done.”
Kingsley sighed. “Good. I’ll Obliviate them, tie up the last loose ends.”
Hestia nodded. “Would you like me to do it? You’ve your hands full at the Ministry--”
Kingsley shook his head. “It’s my duty, I’ll take care of it.”
After Hestia left, Kingsley Apparated to Little Whinging. The dour little house looked the same and, shaking his head, he walked to the front door. When he knocked, however, it wasn’t Vernon who answered as he expected.
Dudley’s smile was welcoming. “Finally!”

Kingsley lowered his wand. “Is everything all right, Dudley?”
“It is now that you’re here.” Dudley stepped inside. “I thought I’d never see you again.”
“Who is it, Dudders?” came Petunia’s querulous voice.
“Salesman,” lied Dudley. “I got rid of him.” And without waiting for a response, he dragged Kingsley upstairs to his room.
Once inside, DUdley turned to Kingsley. “Please don’t leave me here! I can’t stand it.”
“What’s wrong?’ Kingsley asked, his intention to Obliviate Dudley forgotten.
“I want to be part of your world.” Dudley looked expectantly at Kingsley.
“Impossible.”
Dudley’s face crumpled. “You’re my last hope.”
~
“Why do you want to leave the Muggle world?” Kingsley asked.
Dudley grimaced. “What’s here for me? My parents are already acting like nothing happened, but I want to remember everything.”
“Why?”
Sighing, Dudley turned away. “Well we were special, weren’t we? Important.”
“Muggle knowledge of the wizarding world is forbidden unless necessary. I should Obliviate you, remove your memories.”
Dudley blinked. “Figures. I tormented Harry when we were growing up, but he’s never held that against me, he even saved my life once. And he saved the world. I like knowing that.”
Kingsley smiled. “There may be one way--”
~
Exiting the Ministry, Kingsley strolled down the street, two Aurors following discreetly. Approaching a newsstand, he perused the newspapers on offer. “Anything interesting in the news today?”
Dudley smiled. “Read about the little girl in Norfolk whose predictions always seem to come true.”
Kingsley took the paper from him. “Thanks for the tip. I’ll have someone look into it.”
“Gonna let her keep her memories?” Dudley asked.
“We’ll see.” Smiling, Kingsley paid him. “We try to use Obliviators sparingly.”
“Good.” Dudley flushed under Kingsley’s steady look. “I just think we should be allowed our memories. Same time tomorrow?”
Kingsley nodded.
