Perfectly Charming

~

“What shall you do now that you’re exonerated?” Lucius asked.

Severus shook his head. He’d not been surprised Lucius had escaped time in Azkaban, the man always managed to come out smelling like a rose, but his escaping prison time had been utterly shocking. “I may go into business. Potion making, perhaps.”

“Do you have capital?”

“I’ve a plan,” Severus said.

“I see.” Lucius smirked. “I hope you’re not relying on your innate charms to raise money.”

Severus glared at him. “Are you saying I cannot?”

Lucius shrugged. “Perhaps you’ll prove me wrong. We’ll see.”

Severus huffed. Indeed we shall.

Entering Gringotts, Severus approached a counter.

A goblin stared at him impassively. “Yes?”

“I received a letter--”

“Ah yes. Severus Snape. We’ve been expecting you.”

Severus narrowed his eyes. “Indeed.”

The goblin reached for a parchment. “Yes. In conjunction with another wizard, you’ve inherited the vault of one Albus Dumbledore. Congratulations.”

“Another wizard?” Severus frowned. “Who?”

“I cannot say.”

“Charming,” huffed Severus. “Well, when may I have access to the vault?”

“Once you and the other party meet and discuss...terms.” The goblin moved from behind the counter. “Follow me.”

Intrigued, Severus did. Perhaps Albus’ plotting was useful after all.

~

“There.” The goblin gestured towards a room with a partially opened door. “The other party awaits.”

Puzzled, Severus moved inside, the goblin following behind him closely.

A man was standing by the window staring outside. From behind, he looked vaguely familiar. Severus cleared his throat.

Severus’ eyes widened as the man turned and he finally recognised Harry Potter. A very grown up Harry Potter. Who was taller. Handsome. He’s certainly filled out. “Potter?”

Potter’s tentative smile was oddly charming. “Hullo, sir. Are you the other person Professor Dumbledore named in his will?”

Severus sighed. That bloody meddler. “So it appears.”

~

“What decisions must we make?” Potter asked.

“The terms state that the disposition of the estate is to be decided by mutual agreement of all parties involved,” said the goblin.

Potter pursed his lips, distracting Severus. “So that’s me and the professor?”

“I’m not your professor,” interjected Severus.

Potter smiled that infuriating, charming smile of his. “Apologies. Severus, then.”

Severus narrowed his eyes. “I suppose you do deserve the right to call me that,” he finally said.

Potter blinked, his smile softening. “Thanks.”

The goblin coughed. “If we can return to business--?”

Severus blushed. Potter was too distracting.

~

They agreed to split everything equally, so, in mere minutes, they were inspecting the vault.

“What are you going to do with your share?” Potter asked as they looked around.

Severus hesitated. “I’d planned use the proceeds to open a potion shop,” he said, recalling Lucius’ reaction with a frown.

“But you’ve changed your mind?” Potter said.

Severus sighed. “Recently, someone suggested I don’t have the requisite charm required for sales. I’m pondering if they’re correct.”

Potter shrugged. “Hire someone else to do that, then. Since you’re brilliant at potions, concentrate on that.”

Severus blinked. “Who’d work for me?”

Potter smiled. “I could use a job.”

~

The week it opened, Potente Potions was the most popular shop in Diagon Alley, and even six weeks in, its popularity showed no signs of abating. Lucius remained studiously silent.

Harry was the perfect manager. He restocked shelves, kept track of inventory, and was a charming blend of salesman and confidante. Severus was sure they sold about double what they should have simply because of his presence. He never said anything about it, of course.

Severus did notice, however, that a young man kept hanging about, and, suspicious, he began hovering, watching. Things finally came to a head one day.

~

“...one drink! Come on, Harry! Hanging about here with Snape’s boring.”

Severus awaited Harry’s reply, concentrating on his carefully cast Eavesdropping Charm.

“I lo-like spending time with Severus, Oliver.” Harry sounded exasperated. “It’s satisfying.”

“But--”

“Goodbye, Oliver. Come back when you need a potion.”

The moment Severus heard the door close, he exhaled.

“Overhear anything interesting?” Harry asked moments later.

Severus jumped. “What?” Severus tried to scowl but it faded in the face of Harry’s knowing look. “How did you know?”

Harry smiled, the sight charming Severus, as it always did. “Because I’ve been waiting for you to hear that.”

~

“I apologise,” murmured Severus, looking away. “Your personal life isn’t my business.”

“And if I want it to be your business?” Harry asked, clasping Severus’ hand. Severus felt that touch throughout his entire body. “Maybe I’ve been hoping you’d want to be my personal life.”

Shocked, Severus stared at him. “You’re not serious.”

“I am,” Harry whispered.

Severus shook his head. “Why? I’ve nothing to offer you.” He grimaced. “I’m far from charming.”

Harry snorted. “If I wanted charming I’d accept Oliver’s offer. I’m interested in you. But if you’re not--”

Severus placed his hand over Harry’s. “I’m no fool.”

~

Flicking his wand, Harry locked the door, flipped the sign to ‘closed’, and shuttered the front windows. Within moments, Severus was pressed against the counter, Harry in his arms. “I know we should go slowly,” he moaned against Severus’ throat. “But--”

“Wooing can come later,” Severus agreed. When, with a whispered word, their clothes disappeared and Harry gasped, he smirked. “If you’d rather do this in a bed--”

In reply, Harry dragged him onto the floor. A hasty Cushioning Charm made it comfortable, and for the first time since opening his shop, Severus didn’t worry about his afternoon sales numbers.

~

“You’ve proved me wrong,” Lucius sighed, looking around Severus’ shop. Potente Potions was quite successful, with booming international sales.

“We’re...managing,” said Severus blandly. “Was there something you needed?”

Lucius coughed. “The Ministry’s fines are...restrictive. Since you’re so successful--”

Severus smirked. “What, no attempts to charm me?”

Lucius grimaced. “The straightforward approach seemed best--”

Severus inclined his head. “Indeed.”

Once Lucius left, Harry approached Severus. “Is everything all right?”

“Fine,” Severus assured him. “I loaned Lucius money.” At Harry’s clear surprise, he smiled. “Why not? After all, those with wealth of any type should share with the less fortunate.”

Read this last night and again just now. Both times it made me grin. It is so satisfying be the one to loan Lucius money, is it not? And for once I am not annoyed at Dumbledore's meddling. But most of all, I'm happy Severus and Harry ended up together. Well done, Sweetie!
