More Than a Regular Muggle

“Levicorpus!”

Frowning, Dudley leaned outside his stall and into the street. He’d heard the strange word clearly yet no one was there. Shaking his head, he continued stacking newspapers.

A sudden chill made him shiver. People were walking past normally, however. Sighing, Dudley continued working. Why am I so jumpy?

“This way,” someone said. “No Muggles will notice.”

Some instinct made Dudley duck, and peering between his papers, he saw two robed people walk past, a body floating between them. What the hell?

Once they were past, Dudley stood, shaking. Kingsley needs to know about this as soon as possible.

“You’re certain he said Levicorpus?” Kingsley frowned.

“Positive,” Dudley said. “I even wrote it down so I’d remember.”

Kingsley sighed and, leaning close to one of the red-robed blokes who always followed him about, murmured something. The man nodded and a moment later disappeared. “There’s a kidnapping gang terrorising the wizarding world. This sounds like them.”

“Kidnappers?” Dudley blanched. “But there were out in the open.”

“No one else noticed them?”

Dudley shook his head.

Kingsley pursed his lips. “Then it seems you’re becoming more than a regular Muggle, Dudley.”

Dudley blinked. “Am I...magical?”

Kingsley sighed. “I don’t know.”

There was a crack and a familiar figure strolled out of the alley behind the newsstand. “Harry?” Dudley whispered.

“Big D.” Harry had grown up. His shoulders were broad and his eyes were hard. Dudley wouldn’t want to run into him in a dark alley. “You’ve encountered our Levicorpus gang?”

Kingsley smiled. “Is that what you’re calling them?”

Harry’s face transformed as he grinned at Kingsley. Dudley gritted his teeth. “We had to call them something.”

“True.” Kingsley gestured at Dudley. “Take a statement. And then we’ll need to have him tested.”

“Tested?” Harry eyed Dudley. “For?”

Kingsley smiled. “Magic.”

“Your parents can’t know,” Harry said.

Dudley, in shock that he had magic, albeit weak amounts, glared at him. “I know. Actually, they wouldn’t believe me anyway.”

Harry shrugged. “Just thought I’d mention it.”

Dudley looked away, still disturbed by the idea that Harry and Kingsley could be...close. “What’s so bad about this Levicorpus gang, anyway?”

Harry sighed. “They capture magical folk and drain them of magic.”

“Damn,” Dudley said. “That’s...cold.”

“Yeah.” Harry eyed him. “So, will you help us capture them?”

Dudley sighed. He had no desire to help Harry, but helping Kingsley was a different matter.

While Dudley couldn’t do magic, he could see it, and so, he watched. Harry’d given him a coin. If anything suspicious happened he was supposed to press its centre, then hide.

Fuck that. Dudley’s eyes narrowed as he studied the people walking past his stall. If those Levicorpus blokes return I can take them. Then Kingsley will see that I can do more than just watch.

Dudley was just imagining Kingsley’s admiration if he brought the criminals in single-handedly when two robed figures approached. As before, no one seemed to notice the body floating between them. Dudley tensed. Here goes.
