Opening Doors

~

“You lost your cousin.” Kingsley’s tone was even.

Harry looked sheepish. “I gave him a coin to activate if he spotted anything. That was two days ago.”

Kingsley sighed. “And we know your Levicorpus gang are operating in the area.”

Harry nodded. “Exactly. I checked Dudley’s newsstand, but it’s locked up.”

“Did you try Alohomora?” Richards, one of Kingsley’s personal Aurors, sneered.

Harry glared at him. “Naturally. Then I went to Dudley’s flat. He lives--”

“...in the East End.” Kingsley ignored Harry’s startled look. “Continue the search.” He looked at Richards. “I’ll join you once I make some...personnel adjustments.”

~

Dudley ached as if he’d gone twenty rounds in the ring. He groaned.

“He’s awake!”

“You mean he lived?” someone asked.

“Yeah, that’s why I brought him.”

A pause. “Hm. I thought he was a Muggle, but if he has magic--”

“Attach him to the machine? See what happens?”

“Why not?”

Dudley gasped in pain as he was lifted off the floor. He cracked open an eye. His leg hung at an odd angle. Broken. Damn.

“Get that door.”

Alohomora.”

When Dudley saw the machine he almost blacked out. It looked horrid. Dudley shivered. Kingsley can’t save me this time.

~

Harry swore. “There were two of them,” he said, flicking his wand. “They released a short burst of intense magic and then they left.” He looked up at Kingsley, his face stoic. “I can’t tell if Dudley survived, it was a lot of magic.”

Kingsley exhaled. “Well, they took him with them. Why take a dead body?”

Harry’s face relaxed. “True.”

Kingsley scanned the scene, mind racing. I’ve missed this. Perhaps I shouldn’t run for Minister again. “Let’s look inside the newsstand. Alohomora.”

There were no clues inside, unfortunately. “I wish he’d activated the coin,” Harry whispered.

Kingsley sighed. “Agreed.”

~

Dudley was dumped onto the floor. “Alohomora!” The door opened, more people joining them.

“This the special Muggle?”

“We’re not sure he is Muggle, actually.”

“Guess we’ll find out soon enough.”

“Start the machine.”

Footsteps moved away and Dudley edged his hand towards his pocket. I was a fool. I should have just called Harry and not messed about--

“...he’s moving!”

Dudley’s fingers grazed the coin but a moment later something hit him in head. Before the world went black, he thought, Now I’ll never get to tell Kingsley how I feel about him. Harry’d better be good to him.

~

“Finally!”

Kingsley spun. “What?”

Harry held up a glowing coin. “He activated it.”

Kingsley exhaled. Finally. “And it’s a tracer, too?”

Harry nodded. “I’ll Side-Along-Apparate us.”

One of Kingsley’s Auror honour guard stepped forward. “Where the Minister goes, we go.”

Harry nodded. “Everyone link hands.”

They landed in a deserted field. A warehouse loomed behind them. Silently, Harry pointed to the door and mimed blasting it open.

The Aurors and Kingsley drew their wands. Kingsley nodded.

Alohomora!” Harry shouted.

The door actually burst under the force of Harry’s spell, and Kingsley’s eyes narrowed in concentration. Merlin, let him be okay--

~

I’m hallucinating, Dudley thought.

His captors had laid him out, attached tubes to him, and were fiddling with some buttons on the machine when there was a distant shout. “Alohomora!” cried a familiar voice, and people stormed the room.

Dudley’s gaze went straight to the tall man in the centre, whose face was fierce. He was magnificent, his wand a blur as he moved.

Behind him, Dudley spotted Harry. His wand was almost as fast as Kingsley’s and as consciousness slipped away, Dudley smiled. At least I got see him one more time. Even if it was only a dream--

~

When Dudley moaned, Kingsley moved towards his bed. It’d been days since the raid where they’d captured the Levicorpus gang. And between them, they’d handily captured the criminals.

Spotting the machine, Harry sent a Patronus to Snape, who’d appeared with his fellow Unspeakables, confiscating the thing. I’m sure an Alohomora can’t access it now.

“Kingsley?” Dudley whispered.

“Welcome back.” Kingsley clasped Dudley’s hand. “Care to explain why you didn’t call for help?”

To Kingsley’s surprise, Dudley flushed. “I wanted to prove myself. Now you think I’m useless.”

Kingsley smiled. “What I think is, you need someone to look after you.”

~

Dudley could’ve stared into Kingsley’s eyes forever. And the way Kingsley was looking at him was promising. “We can look after each other,” he said, daring to entwine his fingers with Kingsley’s.

Kingsley smiled. “Perhaps.”

Unsure how to broach the topic of Harry, Dudley held his breath. “Now what?”

Kingsley sighed. “You heal and we discover how much magic you have. You’ll need lessons.”

There was a knock and Dudley winced. Kingsley tightened his hand on Dudley’s. “Alohomora. Come in.”

The door opened and Harry entered. “Hey, Big D.”

Dudley bit his lip. I’ll fight for Kingsley if I must.

~

“Glad you’re awake,” Harry said, approaching. “We were worried.”

“We?” Dudley frowned. “You didn’t tell Mum and Dad!”

Harry laughed. “No.”

Dudley saw the moment Harry noticed that he and Kingsley were holding hands. Exhaling, Dudley tilted his chin up in defiance.

To his surprise, Harry smiled. “I shan’t tell them anything.”

Kingsley’s wand buzzed, with a regretful look at Dudley, he rose. “Alohomora. Excuse me.”

Once alone with Harry, Dudley coughed. “You don’t mind?”

“Mind?” Harry grinned. “I think you’ve brilliant taste.”

“You and Kingsley aren’t--?”

Harry blinked. “What? No! God, Severus would kill--” He coughed. “No.”

Dudley relaxed.

~

Dudley was waiting when Kingsley got back.

Alohomora.” Kingsley opened the door and entered the room. “Oh, did Harry leave?” he asked.

Dudley nodded. “Yeah. He mumbled something about having to meet someone named Severus and then took off.”

Kingsley nodded. “That’s his husband. He can be very...possessive.”

Dudley blinked. “Harry’s married?” He shook his head. “To a man?”

“He is.” Kingsley watched him carefully. “Is that a problem?”

“No.” Dudley looked away. “Is that common here?”

Kingsley smiled, sitting on the edge of the bed. “You can’t help who you love.”

“Oh.” Dudley blushed under Kingsley’s perusal. “Right.”

~

Dudley licked his lips. Suddenly the very air in the room seemed...thicker. “May I ask a question?”

“Of course.”

“What does ‘Alohomora’ mean? You keep saying it when you come in.”

“It’s a spell to unlock things,” Kingsley explained, clasping Dudley’s hand once more. “Like doors.”

“Oh.” Dudley tried hard not to let Kingsley’s touch distract him. “Why do you keep having to use it, though?”

Kingsley smiled. “Because I keep locking the door.”

“Why?”

Kingsley pulled him close. “Because I intend to kiss you, and I don’t want anyone walking in.”

Dudley found he could live with that.
