“There’s one position left to fill,” Severus said, scanning the parchment. “Herbology.”
Harry smiled. “Well that’s obvious.”
“Indeed?” Severus raised an eyebrow.
“Neville! He was brilliant in school.”
Severus coughed. “Would he be comfortable working here?”
Harry blinked. “Why wouldn’t he?”
“He’s one of your former paramours.”
Harry’s eyes widened. “No.”
“You seemed close.”
“We’re friends. Plus, he married Ginny, who’s practically my sister.”
Severus hummed. “Then perhaps you should contact him and see if he’d be willing to interview.”
Harry pursed his lips. “What did you do to him, Severus?”
“Nothing. Much.” Severus rose. “Let me know his response.”

Neville’s eyes widened when Harry asked him to interview at Hogwarts. “To be Herbology professor I’d have to live there, right?”
“Well, yes.” Harry thought he saw the problem. “The quarters are big enough for you and Ginny.”
“I know.” Neville coughed. “Is Snape aware you’re discussing this with me?”
“He suggested you interview.”
“Oh.”
Harry’s eyes narrowed. “Neville, what did Severus do?”
“Nothing.” Neville bit his lip. “We...chatted just before you two started dating.”
Harry sighed. “About?”
Neville shook his head. “Let’s say...I’m interested if Snape’s all right with it.”
Harry closed his eyes. “I’ll handle it.”
~
Harry found Severus in their quarters. “Please tell me you didn’t threaten Neville.”
Severus looked up from reading. “I didn’t threaten Neville.”
Harry eyed Severus over top of his glasses. “Really?”
Severus smirked. “What did he say?”
“He didn’t really say anything.” Harry narrowed his eyes. “But I know you.”
“There were no threats,” Severus said. “I simply...explained things.”
Harry sighed. “What things?”
“Nothing that should affect him becoming Herbology professor.” Setting aside his book, Severus stood. “Is he interested?”
“Yes.” Harry shook his head. “Just...please behave.”
Severus raised an eyebrow. “My behaviour is impeccable.”
Harry snorted. “Right.”

Neville’s interview went well. Harry sat in, and when Severus offered Neville the Herbology position, he accepted. Harry’d watched for signs that Severus was somehow intimidating Neville, but both men appeared relaxed. “I’ll see Neville out,” he said afterward.
Severus nodded. “Very well.”
Once alone, Harry smiled. “I’m glad you’re coming. I wasn’t sure you would.”
Neville shrugged. “It’s a great opportunity.”
“So answering to Severus won’t bother you?”
“Not at all.” Neville grinned. “After all, he only gets weird when he thinks you’re threatened. I plan to never do that.”
Harry blinked, surprised. “He does?”
Neville chuckled. “Most definitely.”
~
Harry found Severus in his office. “With Herbology filled, you’ve a full staff roster,” he said, leaning against the door. “Happy?”
“Ecstatic,” murmured Severus dryly.
Harry smiled. Neville’s words had given him food for thought. He’d known Severus was possessive, but he hadn’t realised it’d started quite so early in their relationship. “Well I’m glad you took my advice. Neville’s thrilled to be here.” His smile deepened. “And he’s safely married.”
Severus cocked an eyebrow. “As are you.”
Harry laughed, walking towards him. “True.” He straddled Severus’ lap. “You’ll never stop protecting me, will you?”
Snorting, Severus embraced him. “Never.”

Thanks, hon!
