An Acromantular Affair
~
“...last of Aragog's,” Hagrid sobbed. “Needs someone to look after him--”
Severus moved closer.
“...not sure--” said Remus.
“...jus’ until I get back--” There was more murmuring which ceased when the door closed.
“You may as well come out, Severus,” Remus said.
“Damned werewolf senses,” Severus muttered without heat. “What did Hagrid want?”
Remus held out a box.
Severus stared inside. “An Acromantula?”
“Hagrid asked if we’d keep him as a favour.”
Leaning in, Severus studied the creature. “You realise it’s a her, and that she's pregnant?”
Remus groaned. “Damn.”
“What?”
“Hagrid’s gone for three months.”
Severus sighed. “Bloody Gryffindors.”

The Acromantula proved quite friendly. “If you don’t get out of my bed you’re potions ingredients,” Severus snapped the first time he found her in their bed.
By the third time, however, he just rolled his eyes and, picking her up, put her on the pillow Remus left at the foot of the bed for her.
“What’s the gestation period for Acromatulas?” Remus asked one day.
Severus shrugged. “No idea. The only one I knew was Aragog, and that was only because he almost killed Potter. Why?”
Remus coughed. “I thought we could make her a nest.”
Severus shook his head. “Gryffindors really are mad.”

“Aren't they cute?”
Looking up, Severus shook his head at Remus, whose lap was covered with baby Acromantulas. “They’re arachnids, they are not cute.”
Remus ignored him. “One’s missing.”
Severus snorted. “How can you tell?”
“Ah, there you are!” Extending his hand, Remus cooed and a tiny Acromantula scuttled across the floor to him.
“Next you’ll be naming them,” Severus muttered.
Remus coughed. “I may have named a few.”
"Salalzar."
Remus grinned. “Well I suppose that’s a valid name, although I was thinking similar names to Aragog were more appropriate.”
Severus rolled his eyes. He couldn’t wait for Hagrid’s return.

Hagrid beamed as he took in all the baby Acromantulas scuttling about the house. “He was a she? I hope they weren’t too much trouble.”
“They were well behaved,” Remus said.
Hagrid smiled. “Aragog was, too, when he was a baby. Righ’, I’ll take ‘em.”
Remus looked bereft. Severus frowned. “All of them?”
“Well yes. I assumed yeh wouldn’t wan’ any,” said Hagrid.
Severus pursed his lips. “They’re no worse than many students I’ve had.”
Remus, smiling, slipped his hand into Severus’. “Thanks.”
“Salazar, I’m becoming a Gryffindor,” Severus sighed. But when Remus kissed him, it didn’t feel so bad.
