Possession, Potions and Professors
~
“I’ve an assignment, Severus.”
Severus inclined his head. Minerva, while more straightforward than Albus, was still headmistress. He wasn’t sure he trusted her. There’s something about the position-- “Indeed.”
She smiled. “Yes. I need to recruit for the Potions position.”
Relaxing, Severus nodded. “I’m aware and I’ve several candidates that should be acceptable--”
“I’ve made my choice.” Minerva held his gaze. “Harry Potter. I’d like you to offer him the position.”
Severus’ heart sank. “Potter? But he’s--” Beautiful and too tempting.
“Fully qualified.” Minerva handed him parchment attesting to Potter’s Potions mastery.
“Why me?”
She smiled again. “I’ve my reasons.”
~
Potter lived in Godric’s Hollow. Upon spotting the familiar cottage, Severus almost abandoned his mission. Only his appreciation for the chance Minerva had taken by rehiring him after his trial made him knock on the door.
“Just a minute!” The door opened moments later and Potter stood there looking very...adult. “Ah, Snape!”
“Indeed.” Severus kept his tone even. “I’m here at the behest of Headmistress McGonagall--”
“Right, she said you’d be by,” Potter interrupted, stepping aside. “I’ve a potion on, come in.”
Following, Severus trained his eyes on Potter’s hair, ignoring his shapely arse. Mostly. My life’s complicated enough.
~
Severus looked around. It was a Potions master’s heaven.
There were four work tables, all with their own supplies. Specific cauldrons hung over each table and Potter had even organised his workspace so that base ingredients were within reach. Brilliant. Why did I never think of this?
“Have a seat,” Potter said, gesturing to a stool that was out of the way. “This shouldn’t take too long to complete.”
“Indeed,” Severus murmured. Potter’s lab was impressive. “You’re quite organised.”
Potter grinned as he peered into a bubbling cauldron. “Thanks, I try.”
“Indeed,” Severus said. Perhaps Minerva wasn’t senile after all.
~
Although Potter brewed with confidence, it took everything Severus had not to inspect his work. Inhaling deeply, he tried to identify the potion.
“It’s Bruise Paste.” Potter smiled as Severus blinked. “I’d be curious, too. It’s for Neville. He...bruises easily.”
Longbottom. Severus kept his face expressionless. Is he Potter’s lover? “I’ll let you return to it quickly,” he bit out. Reaching into his robes, he withdrew the parchment with Minerva’s job offer.
Potter smiled. “How about a cup of tea first? Then we can talk.”
Severus sighed. He was weak for not being able to refuse but... “Very well.”
~
Potter makes good tea. Sipping, Severus said, “The headmistress is offering you the position of Potions professor at Hogwarts.” Severus handed Potter the parchment. “The terms are negotiable, so if something isn’t to your liking, let me know. I’m authorised to negotiate.”
Potter read the parchment. “What about relationships?”
“What about them?”
“Are romantic relationships allowed between professors?”
Severus frowned. Longbottom wasn’t a professor-- He blinked. But Minerva is planning to replace Poppy. That must be why she approached Potter first! He’ll come, then Longbottom will follow. Two birds, one stone. “Not a problem,” Severus bit out.
Potter smiled. “Brilliant!”
~
“Do you accept?” Severus snapped. “Because I’ve things to do.”
A hurt expression crossed Potter’s face. “Oh. Yes! Um, I’d hoped you’d stay for dinner. You know, to celebrate--”
And watch you and Longbottom together? Not likely. “I’m sure you and your partner would rather celebrate your new Potions position in private,” Severus sneered.
Potter frowned. “Who?”
Severus paused. “Aren’t you and Longbottom--?”
“Neville?” Potter looked horrified. “God no. I’m not--” He bit his lip. “I’m not with anyone right now.”
“Indeed.” Severus regarded Potter steadily. “So this dinner would be...just us?”
“Yes.” Potter coughed. “Is that okay?”
“Acceptable.”
~
Dinner was stew, accompanied by a bottle of red wine. Severus thoroughly enjoyed the meal.
While eating, they discussed teaching, Severus imparting tips for handing potential Potions disasters while Potter shared his ideas for the curriculum. It felt like a date.
After berry pie, they sat in Potter’s garden watching the stars. “I’m glad you stayed. I know you’re a busy man,” Potter said, smiling.
Severus flushed. “I should go. Though it was the least I could do for our newest member of staff.” He rose.
Smiling, Potter stood, clasping his arm. “Well, I appreciate the...special attention.”
Severus froze.
~
With Potter’s touch warming him, Severus wasn’t sure what to do. Does he even realise what his eyes are promising? “Potter, I--”
Potter smiled nervously. “When I asked about romantic relationships between professors I had someone specific in mind,” he said quietly.
“Oh?” Severus’ mouth was dry.
“Yes.” Potter nibbled the corner of his bottom lip. “Do you know why I got interested in Potions? Because of the Half-Blood Prince. I fell in love with him.”
Severus blinked. “I’m no longer that person--”
“Perhaps not,” Potter murmured. “But that just means I’ll get to know the new you.”
“Indeed?”
“Definitely.”
~
“This will never work,” Severus murmured.
Potter raised his head from Severus’ neck. “You said there’s no rule against professors dating.”
“There isn’t,” Severus conceded. “But you’re Harry Potter. People won’t accept--”
“I don’t care about people.” Potter kissed the corner of Severus’ mouth. “My friends already know how I feel about you, and as long as Minerva doesn’t mind, we’ll be fine.”
Severus raised an eyebrow. “Longbottom knows?”
Potter smiled. “What is your obsession with Neville? He’s in love with Ginny.”
“You make him Bruise Paste.”
“He’s my friend.” Potter grinned. “Are you always this...possessive?”
Severus smirked. “Perhaps.”
~
Severus returned to Hogwarts late, having dragged himself away from Harry. Minerva was waiting. “Did you speak with Harry?”
“Indeed.”
She raised an eyebrow. “And?”
“He’s accepted the Potions professorship.”
“Excellent. When will he be joining us?”
Severus coughed. He’d forgotten to ask between kisses. “I’m not sure. I’ll be happy to contact him and ask, however.”
“Good.” She smiled, turning away. “Any idea where he’ll want to have his quarters?”
Close to mine would be best. “Another question I’ll be happy to ask.”
“Let me know. And, Severus?”
“Yes?”
Minerva patted his arm. “It’s good to see you...happy.”

Date: 2013-08-05 11:34 pm (UTC)*nods* And I agree. Severus should give in more often. Although something tells me he'll be geting a fair bit of practice in that quite soon... :)

Date: 2013-08-05 04:57 am (UTC)I always figured Harry would be smarter than to go for Auror... and Potions? It fits the challenge myself-love interest-introspective head!canon that I have for him.
