Remus groaned upon regaining consciousness. “The Knight Bus really needs to stop running over me.”
“That was no bus, that was Buckbeak.”
Severus’ smug tone made Remus sit straight up in bed, which didn’t help his headache one iota. “Ow!”
Severus smirked, handing him a steaming cup of something revolting smelling. “Drink it quickly,” he advised.
Remus did, almost gagging. “Merlin that was awful!”
“Perhaps it will encourage you not to attack hippogriffs in future, then.” Severus sounded far from sympathetic.
“I was trying to feed him.”
Severus snorted. “When your head’s better, we shall discuss it further.”
Remus groaned.

“Sirius left him to me to take care of! I owe it to his memory, not to mention to Buckbeak after the way I attacked him in the Forbidden Forest.”
Severus eyes him over the rim of his teacup. “It’s my recollection that he attacked you while defending Potter and Granger. You owe that flying eating machine nothing.”
Remus sighed. They’d had discussions about the topic so many times he was getting tired of them. “I can’t just abandon him. Someone’s sure to capture him.”
Just then, Salazar the Acromantula skittled across the floor. Slowly, Severus smiled. “I’ve an idea--”
~
“Buckbeak?” Hagrid’s eyes slowly filled with tears. “’Course I’ll take him back!”
Ignoring Severus’ triumphantly smirk, Remus smiled. “You’re doing us a favour, Hagrid, thanks.”
Hagrid waved a beefy hand in the air. “It’s no favour! It’s what friends do for each other. An’ I love Buckbeak. Missed him, I did.”
Once Buckbeak’s nest was established behind Hagrid’s hut, Remus relaxed. “Why did this never occur to me before?” he murmured, watching Buckbeak practically purr as Hagrid groomed him.
“That’s why I’m here,” Severus replied. “I’m the thinking man.”
Remus grinned, groping his arse. “While I’m the man of action.”
