A Good Example

~

It’d been decades since Remus had stood in the Muggle Studies classroom. He’d lived through two wars, a marriage, his son’s birth, his wife’s death-- So many things have happened since I was last here.

Sighing, Remus approached the window. The view looked out over the lake. The giant squid was feeling playful; Remus could see it lobbing rocks towards students on the shore, who were laughing.

I don’t think we were ever that carefree.

Leaning against the windowsill, he recalled a time when this room had proved so very important and, sliding his hands into his pockets, he reminisced.

~

“Come on, Moony! Muggle Studies is pointless,” Sirius hissed.

Scanning his textbook, Remus ignored him.

Sirius huffed. “Fine. Stay.” Remus heard him slip from his seat and a moment later, Severus Snape went sprawling across his desk.

“Mister Snape, are you all right?” asked the professor, mid-sentence.

Righting himself, Snape glared suspiciously at Remus before finally settling back into his seat. “Yes.”

Remus sighed. Sirius was such a berk at times. I wish James had never lent him that Cloak.

Snape was still staring at Remus once class ended. “Lupin,” he called as Remus stood. “A word.”

Remus groaned. Shit.

~

Remus waited for Snape. As Snape exited, the Muggle Studies professor was behind him. “What’s this?” she asked, eyes narrowed. “I hope you weren’t planning to fight.”

I wasn’t, Professor.” Remus tried to look as innocent as possible.

“Nor I,” Snape muttered.

“Very well.” She moved away. “But if I hear about any altercations here, gentlemen, I’ll deduct House points and assign detentions.”

Once she’d left, Remus said, “What did you want?”

Snape sneered. “You had something to do with what happened to me in class.”

“No, I--”

Snape held up a hand. “Not here.”

Remus nodded. “Where?”

“Follow me.”

~

To Remus’ surprise, Snape led him back into the Muggle Studies classroom. “What are you doing?” Remus asked.

Snape snorted. “She’ll never expect us to come back in here. She’s probably monitoring the hallway for hexing.”

“Are you’re planning to hex me?” Remus asked quietly.

Snape huffed. “No. I know you didn’t do it,” he finally said. “But you know who did.”

Remus looked away. “Look, I’m sorry it happened to you but--”

“Why do you hang about with those degenerates?” Snape interrupted. “I’ve been watching and you’re actually decent.”

Remus blinked. “You watch me?”

Snape coughed. “Sometimes.”

Remus smiled.

~

The Muggle Studies classroom proved a good place to talk. For hours. “...supportive friends. I know they’ve been jerks to you, Snape, but--”

“But nothing,” Snape growled. “They’re evil bastards.”

“Unlike the bunch you hang about with?” Remus shot back. “You think they’re so nice?”

Snape sneered. “Slytherins aren’t supposed to be nice, just clever, and, according to you people, evil.”

“And I suppose that means Gryffindors are all brave and stupid?” Remus countered.

Snape blinked, then, surprisingly, laughed. “I suppose so.”

Remus smiled. “You’ve a nice smile. You should do that more often.”

Snape stared at him. “Bravery indeed.”

~

When they emerged from the Muggle Studies classroom it was evening. “Look,” Remus said. “We could be friends if we gave it some effort. Why don’t we try?”

Snape raised an eyebrow. “And what will Black and Potter think when you say you want to hang out with me?”

“I’ll explain things to them.” Remus looked out the window, eyes widening. The full moon. Fuck, I forgot! “But not tonight. I’ll, um, I’ll be in touch, all right? I have to go.”

“Wait--”

Remus turned and ran. “I’ll see you!” He could feel Snape’s gaze following him as he left.

~

“...almost had him--”

Remus moaned, opening his eyes. “What happened?”

Sirius leaned over him. “Moony! Rough night, but we solved your Slytherin problem.”

“What?” Remus winced, memories from previous weeks assaulting him. Chatting with Snape in Muggle Studies...laughing...the interest in Severus’ eyes as they studied together...Sirius’ rage when he discovered their friendship-- “What did you do?”

“Snivellus followed you into the Shack,” Peter piped up from behind Sirius. “Siri fixed him.”

Remus’ eyes widened. “What did you do?”

Sirius coughed. “Promise you’ll tell Dumbledore it wasn’t planned, all right? I just meant to scare him--”

Remus groaned.

~

By the time he got out of the infirmary, Remus wasn’t speaking to anyone. Not James, not Peter, and definitely not Sirius. Unfortunately, Severus wouldn’t speak to him. The only opportunity Remus had to even see Snape was in Muggle Studies, so he waited until Snape arrived and sat down before sitting down next to him.

“Go away,” Severus growled.

“Not until you let me explain.”

“You tried to kill me!”

“It wasn’t deliberate!”

“Gentlemen!” The professor was unamused. “Detention! You’ll stay behind after class.”

Remus sagged in his seat. He had his chance, now to pray Severus would listen.

~

“I don’t know what happened between you and I don’t care. You will settle your differences.” The Muggle Studies professor sighed. “You were becoming friends. You were actually providing a good example of inter-House cooperation.”

Remus glanced over at Severus. “I’m willing to try.”

Severus huffed.

“Do you want to serve detention for the rest of term?”

Severus closed his eyes. “No.”

“Then sort this out.” The professor started for the door. “No hexing.”

Once they were alone, Remus turned to Severus. “I’m sorry. Forgive me?”

“Whatever,” Severus muttered, but his posture relaxed.

Remus relaxed, too. All would be well.

~

Memories bombarded Remus as he stood in the dim Muggle Studies classroom. The sun had set, the new moon providing a silvery glow to the grounds and lake.

“Why are you alone in the dark?”

“Merlin!” Remus winced. “You startled me.”

Severus moved closer. “Are you all right?”

Exhaling, Remus nodded. “Just...remembering.”

“Would you prefer to be alone?”

“No.” Turning away from the window, Remus smiled. “I’d prefer we retire to our quarters so you can make me forget everything, including my name.”

“Indeed,” Severus purred, reaching for Remus. “I believe I can do that.”

“I know you can.”
