A Night to Believe
~
“Care to dance, Professor?” Harry held his breath waiting for Snape’s answer. It’d taken several glasses of champagne and some of Hermione’s haranguing to make him approach Snape at all.
Snape blinked, a look of astonishment crossing his face. Then, he snarled, “I’ll not be made fun of, Potter!” And with a swirl of robes, he stormed away.
Humiliated, Harry spun on his heel, stalking the opposite direction. Ignoring Hermione’s waving, he darted out onto one of the balconies lining the Malfoy ballroom. There, sighing, he leaned over a balustrade, staring up at the stars. He didn’t believe me. Shit.
~
Severus was irate. “How dare you?” he growled at Lucius.
Lucius blinked. “To what are you referring, Severus?”
Severus’ jaw worked. “You put him up to it. I don’t believe he’d have made the suggestion otherwise. You must have told him what I told you in confidence! How dare you prank me! It was our secret.”
Swallowing hard, Lucius stepped back. “I have no idea what you’re talking about,” he enunciated precisely. “And, as this is an engagement party for Draco and,” he shuddered, “Ginevra. I would hardly prank anyone tonight.”
Severus’ eyes narrowed. He seems sincere. Which means-- “Fuck!”
~
Someone was approaching. Harry waited, expecting them to light up their fag or whatever, but instead, they came and stood right beside him.
Preparing to move further down the balcony, Harry turned, eyes widening as he saw Snape.
“I...apologise for my earlier outburst.”
Harry’s mouth dropped open. “What?”
Snape sighed. “Are you going to make me repeat that?”
Harry studied Snape. “No. Just...tell me why?”
“Why the apology?” At Harry’s nod, Snape smiled. “Actually, I believe I owe you several.”
I’m dreaming. Harry blinked. “Why?” he repeated.
Hesitantly, Snape offered his hand. “Dance with me and I’ll explain.”
~
The music from the ballroom was distant, but still clear out on the balcony. It faded, however, as Severus waited to see what Potter would do. He’d be within his rights to reject me--
It was Potter’s touch that seemed to break the spell. “All right,” he murmured, grasping Severus’ hand. “I will.”
“Let’s stay out here,” Severus suggested as Potter started for the door. He cleared his throat. “More privacy.”
Potter paused, then smiled, inclining his head. “Brilliant.”
And, as Potter moved into his arms, Severus couldn’t believe it. He’d dreamed of this. Surely it couldn’t actually be happening.
~
Harry fit in Snape’s arms perfectly, and as they swayed to throbbing violins, he almost couldn’t believe he was dancing with the man he’d wanted for so long. Not going to stop to pinch myself, though.
One of Snape’s hands moved until it was resting low on Harry’s back. “Thank you,” he finally said.
Harry looked up at him through his lashes. “For?”
Snape smiled. “Saving the world. Saving...me.”
Harry’s hand tightened on Snape’s. “Saving the world wouldn’t have meant nearly as much if I hadn’t saved you,” he confessed. “So I’m glad.”
Snape’s expression softened. “As am I.”
~
Dancing, they ignored the sounds from inside the ballroom. At one point Severus heard someone’s amplified voice, but the starlight reflected in Potter’s eyes seemed more important.
Not until the balcony door opened did he return to the world.
“...missed the announcement, Harry-- Oh!” Granger looked gobsmacked for maybe a second before smiling. “But I believe you’re busy. Carry on.”
Once she left, Potter groaned. “Sorry! She knows I’ve wanted--” He paused.
“Wanted?” Time dancing and talking with Potter had given Severus an inkling about what he wanted, but he needed to hear it.
“This. You.”
Yes, Severus thought, triumphant.
~
Harry held his breath. Snape’s face looked utterly blank and for a moment Harry wondered if he’d made a mistake. Then, Snape lowered his face to Harry’s, and the world changed.
Moaning, Harry clung as Snape showered kisses on his face and neck. “...believe it,” Snape whispered breathlessly. “Impossible--”
Tilting his head, Harry captured Snape’s mouth. As their tongues entwined and they shared breath, Harry did his best to pour all his pent-up feelings into that kiss. “Not impossible,” he said as they drew apart panting. “Very possible.” He smiled. “In fact, highly likely.”
Snape laughed. “Indeed. So it seems.”
~
When they re-entered the ballroom, it was practically deserted. Hermione, Ron, and all the Weasleys, had already left. Only Draco and Ginny remained, slowly rotating on the dance floor.
Harry’s fingers tightened on Snape’s when the engaged couple turned to stare at them, but Snape made no move to release Harry’s hand. Slowly, they walked hand-in-hand towards Draco and a grinning Ginny. “I believe congratulations are in order?”
Draco, his arm around Ginny’s waist, nodded. “Thank you.” He eyed their entwined fingers. “And to you as well, Severus? Potter?”
Harry held his breath, but Snape seemed serene. “Indeed. Thank you.”
